Fresno workplace shooting leaves two dead, three injured

[Updated at 2 p.m. ET]

A gunman killed one colleague and injured three others at a Fresno, Calif. chicken processing plant, according to several news reports.

Police say the man then shot himself near the scene. According to the FresnoBee.com, the shooter, identified as Lawrence Jones, 42, of Fresno and two of his coworkers were taken to a hospital in critical condition. The condition of a third injured person was not immediately known.

KMPH-TV reports the rampage took place about 8:30 a.m. at Valley Protein, which produces various poultry meat products. The plant was formerly known as Apple Valley Farms.

Fresno police told KMPH that the guman walked into the business looking for a specific person. Reporter Liz Gonzalez says as many as 60 workers may have been inside at the time of the shooting, according to KMPH.

FresnoBee.com spoke to two witnesses who saw factory workers running from the plant. Roger Medina told the newspaper that he was in a nearby McDonald's when a man wearing a meat cutter's vest came rushing in.

"He said, 'There's a guy shooting people over there,' " Medina said.

Jesus Davila was at a bus stop when a factory employee ran up and yelled that a man was shooting inside the plant, according to the newspaper. Davila said he then heard a loud gunshot and saw the suspected shooter outside the factory.

According to the Fresno Bee, Davila said the meat factory worker told him that the gunman had just gotten out of jail.

"He said the guy was in nine years and he was crazy," Davila told the newspaper.
