Those are just two caregiving results culled from the survey, created by the National Council on Aging, UnitedHealthcare and USA Today. Its purpose is to gauge the readiness of communities and adults age 60+ to what I call the ?silver deluge??the 77 million boomers turning 65 to the tune of 10,000 a day.
The three groups decided to ask 2,250 adults age 60+ how prepared they are for their own aging and what they think of the resources available to them in their cities and towns.
Questions covered financial security, community resources, health and wellness, aging in place and caregiving. But don?t expect to see survey results here on all of these topics. Reminder: You are reading a blog on family caregiving!
Not to worry. You can still bone up on survey findings in these other areas.
Consider this a baseline survey. Comparing subsequent reports to it will be particularly insightful. Here are highlights from the inaugural report:
- Close to half of caregivers say they would benefit from more community services. On that list is respite care.
- 61% know their community has services to help them, yet just 15% have used them.
- 21% more have no clue whether services are available where they live.
Have you ever thought about who will be your caregiver should you need one? How about who you may need to look after?
It may seem ultra premature to think about your own caregiving plan for the future. Get over it! You don?t have to make a move, but it?s important to begin thinking about positioning yourself so you?ll have an optimum caregiving situation. Will it be easier if you live closer to family or have them live closer to you? Can you create your own ?family? with supportive friends, a retirement community, or consider other housing options?
Intergenerational cohousing? Aging in place and belonging to a ?Village? membership network that offers social opportunities like movies, museums, theatre, a group meal, or book club, not to mention rides to medical appointments, discounted home repairs and even dog walking?

NORTON, Mass. (AP) ? Tiger Woods ran off six straight birdies in the middle of his opening round Friday and shared the early lead at the Deutsche Bank Championship with a 7-under 64.
Coming off a poor weekend at Bethpage Black, Woods was close to flawless until the end of the round. After his ball sat down in the collar of the ninth green, his chip ran 12 feet by and he wound up with his only bogey on the TPC Boston. Woods missed only two greens. Five of his birdies were from 12 feet or longer.
Jeff Overton birdied the 18th hole to join Woods in the lead among the early starters. Overton needs a good tournament to advance to his home state of Indiana next week in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Peru LNG Cargo Heads to Mexico>> LNG World News
Peru LNG shipped a liquefied natural gas cargo to Mexico on August 28, according to PeruPetro S.A.
The cargo is being hauled by the Ribera del Duero Knutsen, a 173,000 cubic-meter tanker owned by Knutsen OAS Shipping.
The Peru LNG project includes two parts: an LNG plant with a marine terminal from which LNG is sent overseas, and a pipeline connected to the existing TgP pipeline to transport natural gas from the connection point in the mountains of Ayacucho to the LNG plant located on the coast.
Four energy companies form the PERU LNG consortium: Hunt Oil Company of the United States, with a 50% participating interest; SK Energy of South Korea, with a 20% participating interest; Repsol of Spain, also with a 20% participating interest; and Marubeni Corporation of Japan, with a 10% participating interest.

Boy charged with attempted murder in Baltimore school shooting
(Reuters) - A 15-year-old boy suspected of shooting a fellow student on the first day of classes at a Baltimore-area high school has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, but police say they do not know the motive for what apparently was a well-planned attack.
Robert Wayne Gladden Jr. also left an ominous message on his Facebook page before heading off to Perry Hall High School in Baltimore's northeast suburbs on Monday morning.
"First day of school, last day of my life," the posting read. It concluded: "fuck the world."
Gladden was charged Tuesday as an adult and also faces a first-degree assault charge, Baltimore County Police officials said. He is being held without bail ahead of a preliminary hearing set for September 7.
The shooting is the latest incident of gun violence in a summer plagued by troubling shootings in the United States.
In July, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. In August, a suspect described by authorities as a white supremacist killed six people at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin before committing suicide.
Gladden has been cooperating with the investigation, but police said they still do not know what led him allegedly to open fire in the school cafeteria around 11 a.m..
Counter to press reports, Baltimore County Police Corporal Cathy Batton said Gladden was not a victim of bullying. "He denied being bullied," Batton said. "That was not the reason."
"When he walked into the cafeteria and pulled the trigger he did not have any intended target," Batton said.
Batton said Gladden had carefully planned the attack.
Gladden disassembled a double-barreled shotgun he took from his father's house, packed it into his school bag along with a bottle of vodka and hid the weapon in a school bathroom, Batton said. The teen allegedly returned, re-assembled the weapon, drank some of the vodka, and went back into the cafeteria.
A guidance counselor rushed and tackled Gladden when he saw the student produce the gun, but Gladden fired one shot into a crowd of students, striking classmate Daniel Borowy in the back, Batton said. Borowy remains hospitalized in critical condition.
In the work and education section of the boy's Facebook page, located under the handle "Bobby Gladden (SuicidalSmile)," he lists attending Perry Hall but also working for "The Manson Family," an apparent reference to Charles Manson, who is serving a life sentence for directing the 1969 murder of actress Sharon Tate and six others.
The "About Bobby" section reads: "im a meathead, and that's about it."

Pistorius to run again, this time at Paralympics
LONDON (AP) ? The Olympic rings have disappeared across London, and the Paralympic symbols hoisted in their place. Let the games begin ? again.
Thousands of athletes have already arrived for Wednesday's opening ceremony as the Paralympics return to their roots.
The familiar face of Oscar Pistorius and his even more recognizable blades have helped to take the Paralympic movement to the masses ? with 2.3 million tickets already sold.
August has been a groundbreaking month for Pistorius.
The South African will be defending the three titles won four years ago at the Beijing Paralympics, just weeks after becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics.
"I am incredibly excited to be back in London," said Pistorius, who raced in the 400 meters and 4x400 relay earlier this month in the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium. "It was an incredible experience to compete at the Olympic Games and the reception from the crowd I will remember for the rest of my life."
The 25-year-old Pistorius had to contend with battles on and off the track to become the poster boy of the Paralympics, where he will be competing over 100, 200 and 400.
"He is massive," London organizing committee chairman Sebastian Coe said. "In Trafalgar Square this time last year for International Paralympic Day, (there was) a queue of kids who were screaming his name out and wanting autographs."
But Coe stressed that the medals "are not nailed on for him" at the Paralympics.
"Sport is at its best when you have head to heads," he added.
The thrilling duel should come in the 100, with Pistorius no longer the fastest man on no legs.
The "Blade Runner" experienced his first defeat in Paralympic competition in seven years when Jerome Singleton of the United States beat him by 0.002 seconds to win the 100 world title last year, while Jonnie Peacock of Britain has the world record.
"The 100m will be the most competitive 100m race I believe we will have ever seen at the games," Pistorius said.
"I am very well aware of the competition that's out there and I've never been one to be too self-assured or too brash," he added. "I'm comfortable with where I am, as far as my speed work goes on the 100m but I'm very well aware that the other guys are posting quick times."
Pistorius has helped shine the spotlight on the Paralympics more than ever before.
"The Paralympic movement has come of age," International Paralympic Committee President Philip Craven said. "Having a sellout is amazing. A sellout prior to the games starting is unheard of ... it makes you feel good as an athlete."
Many of the 4,200 athletes from 165 countries will parade in the opening ceremony that will celebrate the visionary doctor who conceived the Paralympics.
Ludwig Guttmann used sport in the rehabilitation of servicemen injured in World War II, and organized a hospital games at the time of the 1948 London Olympics that evolved from 1960 into the Paralympics.
"Without sounding too nationalistic or even jingoistic about it, it was created here in '48, we drove all the early stages of the movement," Coe said. "A lot of us do feel they are coming home."
And it's a chance to raise the profile further.
"This really is an opportunity to change attitudes and confront some of the misconceptions that are still out there about disability," Coe said.
That's achieved by creating one festival of sport in the summer in London, with the Paralympics the second element, sharing the same "London 2012" logo.
"We have never treated it as an after show and I think Beijing was a great example of it never being an after show," Craven said.
But for all Craven talks about infusing "equal splendor" between the Olympics and Paralympics, there is frustration at the lack of parity with television coverage.
In the U.S., NBC will air only 5 1-2 hours of Paralympic programming ? none of it live ? with the bulk of the highlights appearing on its cable sports channel.
"It's particularly a disappointment when I look at it from the view of the American public, they will have a great team over here," Craven said.
"It just shows the USA isn't (always) right at the forefront of new things and new ideas ... we know the American public is ready for Paralympic sport."
But there will be widespread live coverage in Brazil, China, Britain and Australia.
"Countries learn over time, they get to know the Paralympics, they don't think it's much to begin with and once they see it they can't get enough of it," Craven said.

'Victim 1' sues Penn State over Sandusky crimes
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? The young man whose 2009 allegations of sexual abuse led to the Penn State scandal and criminal convictions of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky is asking a court to find the university also at fault.
A lawsuit, filed Friday by the person known as Victim 1 at Sandusky's trial, said university officials made deliberate decisions not to report Sandusky to authorities.
It described their actions as "a function of (Penn State's) purposeful, deliberate and shameful subordination of the safety of children to its economic self-interests, and to its interest in maintaining and perpetuating its reputation."
The complaint was filed electronically in Philadelphia state court, Slade McLaughlin, a lawyer for Victim 1, told The Associated Press. The suit names no other defendants than the State College university.
Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 criminal counts for sexual abuse of 10 boys, both on and off campus. At 68, he awaits sentencing that will likely send him to prison for the rest of his life.
Victim 1 and his mother reported Sandusky to the boy's high school and the Clinton County child protective agency in November 2009. Their complaint triggered the state investigation that last year resulted in the criminal charges against Sandusky and two university officials.
Former Penn State administrator Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley, who is on leave, were charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse. Both deny the allegations and are expected to go on trial in January.
Famed football coach Joe Paterno was fired. He died last January.
In the lawsuit, Victim 1 is known as "John Doe C." The suit draws heavily from court testimony, grand jury investigations and Penn State's own investigative report, conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh. The report details how university officials handled the claims against Sandusky and Sandusky's behavior.
University spokesman Dave La Torre said the school has no comment on the pending litigation.
"The university takes these cases very seriously," La Torre said adding that the current president and board "have publicly emphasized that their goal is to find solutions that rest on the principle of justice for the victims."
The suit claimed that a "special relationship" between Penn State and The Second Mile, a Sandusky-founded charity for youth, gave Sandusky a respectable public image and connections that enabled him to perform criminal acts.
It alleged "(Penn State) believed its reputation and economic interests would be adversely impacted if the public learned that a man closely associated with the school's football program was, in fact, a pedophile."
The Second Mile's future remains uncertain, subject to a legal dispute.
According to the lawsuit, Victim 1 met Sandusky about eight years ago, when the boy was 11 and a first-year participant in a camp sponsored by The Second Mile. In his second year, the boy drew Sandusky's attention and accepted invitations to spend nights at the coach's State College home and to attend professional sports events, the suit said.
Over a three-year period ending in 2008, the suit said, Sandusky assaulted the boy more than 100 times, including fondling and oral sex. The lawsuit claims Sandusky attacked "numerous victims over a span of 30 years," but noted that his criminal trial was limited to a 15-year period and 10 victims.
Following Victim 1's testimony, Sandusky was convicted of all six counts that related to him, including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse for instances of oral sex.
The suit alleged negligence, fraudulent concealment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil conspiracy. It said Victim 1 has suffered physical and emotional injuries and will likely need medical and psychological help well into his future. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
Another Sandusky accuser has filed a federal lawsuit related to the scandal and a second victim has filed a court notice that he will file complaint. Lawyers have suggested others may take legal action.

After the Mariners erased a 7-2 deficit in the top of the ninth, Paul Konerko's single with one out in the bottom half ? his third hit of the game ? gave the Chicago White Sox a dramatic 9-8 victory Friday night.
The Chicago bullpen imploded before the offense rallied for two runs in the bottom half to snap Seattle's eight-game winning streak.
"It was a great comeback by our guys, that's what I'm thinking about right now," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "It was an emotional last inning. Obviously went back and forth, but to come back down five runs and score six against a good team like we're playing, it says a lot about our guys and how far they've come."
Kevin Youkilis singled to drive in the tying run off Tom Wilhelmsen (4-3), and Konerko lined a gapper to the opposite field. Right fielder Eric Thames appeared to briefly catch the ball before he collided with center fielder Michael Saunders near the wall. The ball catapulted from Thames' glove and Dewayne Wise crossed the plate.
"It's tough because it was so loud and communication (was hard)," Thames said. "I had a pretty good bead on it. I looked up and I saw (Saunders) running and I went for it and I caught it, but my elbow hit him and it was a pretty bad collision. I caught it, spun around and the ball (went flying).
"It's rough because we put up that six spot in the ninth inning. Our dugout erupted when Saunders scored."
Addison Reed (3-1) earned the win despite blowing his fourth save.
Adam Dunn hit two home runs to increase his major league-leading total to 38 and Alexei Ramirez homered and drove in three runs for the White Sox.
Jesus Montero homered off Phil Humber leading off the ninth. After a one-out walk, Humber was relieved by Donnie Veal, who allowed a double to Trayvon Robinson.

Vargas lasted just four innings, his shortest outing of the season. He allowed six runs and seven hits ? including three home runs.
Vargas was 6-1 with a 1.95 ERA over his previous 10 starts before running into the homer-happy Chicago bats, which have hit a league-best 41 homers in the month of August.

Texas Man Freed After DNA Clears Him Of 1988 Rape

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) ? After serving 24 years in prison for a crime he didn?t commit, today a North Texas man received an apology from a judge and a standing ovation in the courtroom.
David Lee Wiggins was freed from jail Friday after DNA tests proved he wasn?t the person who raped a 14-year-old girl back in 1988.
Wiggins was convicted of Aggravated Sexual Assault in 1989 after the teen victim identified him. The person who assaulted the young girl had covered her face for during most of the attack. Police showed the girl a photo lineup, then a live lineup and the girl said Wiggins looked familiar.
?He [Wiggins] was the only person who was both in the photo array and in the lineup, so of course she recognized him,? said Nina Morrison, an attorney with the Innocence Project of New York.
As he left the courtroom today he said he had no animosity toward the victim who mistakenly identified him.
?It was never he fault. She didn?t do nothing? I know that,? he said. ?She was a victim. I?m sorry about what happened to her and I want her to know it.?
The Innocence Project nonprofit group successfully obtained the DNA test that proved Wiggins definitely wasn?t the girl?s attacker.
Recalling the day he got word about the test results Wiggins said, ?They [the Innocence Project] called me again and said that the results are in and I?m innocent. It was kind of like ya know when I first got the life sentence. I was numb. I couldn?t really believe it.?
Wiggins said his release has brought relief but admitted the decades in prison weren?t easy.
?At first, like I said, I was bitter and angry and my record will reflect it,? he said. ?I was anxious a few times, but I always believed that the truth would come out.?
Ultimate the now 48-year-old said he survived because of his faith.
?Jesus Christ, as a matter of fact, brought me through,? he explained. ?I read in the Word ya know that faith will move mountains and surely this was a mountain I needed moved.?
Wiggins sister, Candy Berg, was by his side in court Friday. She was a police officer at the time of his arrest.
?It was very difficult. It was heart wrenching because nobody wants to see their relatives behind bars,? she said. ?I wanted him to be happy and have a family and it seemed like that was just all going away.?
Of Wiggins years behind bars Berg said, ?We?ve always known he was innocent of this. I?ve never doubted that for a moment, but the judicial system, you have to let it work.?
Wiggins is the second person in Tarrant County to have a conviction overturned by DNA, since 2001 when Texas passed a statute allowing convicted inmates to request post-conviction DNA testing.
State District Judge Louis Sturns freed Wiggins on a personal bond. Now the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals must accept the judge?s recommendation or the governor must grant a pardon.
If Wiggins conviction is formally reversed he will be eligible for $80,000 a year in compensation that Texas pays to wrongfully convicted ex-inmates.

The new logo ushers in "one of the most significant waves of product launches in Microsoft's history," Jeff Hansen, the company's general manager of brand strategy, wrote in a blog post Thursday.
The redesign features the Microsoft name in a lighter, straight font called Segoe to replace the italic bold type used in the old standby. The new logo also includes the familiar red, blue, yellow and green colors used in the flag on Microsoft's Windows operating system, but the colors will be in a square box instead of the curvy template that has been in place for years. Those color boxes evoke the tiles that will be central to Windows 8.
"The ways people experience our products are our most important 'brand impressions,'" Hansen wrote. "That's why the new Microsoft logo takes its inspiration from our product design principles while drawing upon the heritage of our brand values, fonts and colors."
The new logo made its debut Thursday on Microsoft's websites, as well as three of its stores in Boston, Bellevue, Wash. and Seattle, which is located near the company's Redmond, Wash., headquarters.
