Police arrest Tupelo, Miss., man in ricin case

The FBI arrested Tupelo, Miss., resident Everett Dutschke in connection to the ricin-laced letters sent to President Obama and two other officials, police said Saturday. NBC News' Kristen Welker reports.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

A Tupelo, Miss. man has been arrested and charged in connection with the letters addressed to President Obama and a U.S. senator that initially tested positive for the poison ricin, police said Saturday.

James Everett Dutschke, 41, was charged with possessing and attempting to use ricin as a biological weapon, the Department of Justice announced. Dutschke could face life imprisonment and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

He was arrested in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning by federal agents. Investigators searched Dutschke?s home on Tuesday in the expanding case into the letters sent to the president, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker and Lee County, Miss., Justice Court Judge Sadie Holland.

The arrest took place at Everett?s home in Tupelo without incident, an FBI spokesperson said.

The possibility that Dutschke might be of interest to investigators was raised earlier in the week by an attorney representing another Mississippi resident, Paul Kevin Curtis, who was arrested on April 18. Charges against Curtis were dropped on Tuesday.

?I respect President Obama and love my country,? Curtis said at a news conference on Tuesday. ?I would never do anything to pose a threat to him or any other U.S. official.?

As Dutschke?s home was searched on Tuesday, he told reporters that he had nothing to do with the case.

?I guess Kevin got desperate,? Dutschke told the Jackson Clarion Ledger. ?I feel like he?s getting away with the perfect crime.?

?I don?t know anything about this. Where are the allegations coming from? Who made the allegations? The defense attorney for the accused,? Dutschke said.

Curtis, 45, a professional Elvis impersonator, was the first man arrested in the case. Wicker said that he recognized the man after his arrest, and had once hired the man he called ?very entertaining? to perform as Elvis at a party.

The letters sent to Obama and Wicker were both postmarked April 8, 2013, and mailed out of Memphis, Tenn. They end with an identical phrase, according to an FBI bulletin obtained by NBC News: ?to see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance.?

The letters also ended with the message, ?I am KC and I approve this message.?

An FBI agent testified on Monday that a search of Curtis? home and vehicle did not turn up any ricin or castor beans, which are used to make the poison.

?There was no apparent ricin, castor beans, or any material there that could be used for the manufacturing, like a blender or something,? Agent Brandon Grant said in a courtroom in Oxford, Miss., according to the Associated Press.

Key Egyptian negotiator with IMF quits

CAIRO (Reuters) - A key Egyptian negotiator with the International Monetary Fund said on Sunday he has resigned as first deputy finance minister, in a potential blow to Cairo's prospects of an early IMF deal.

Hany Kadry Dimian has been the crucial point man in Egypt's protracted and so far fruitless negotiations to obtain a $4.8 billion loan needed to help combat a severe economic crisis.

"The only comment I can make for the time being is that yes, my term ends on April 30 according to my resignation, which I submitted in December," Kadry told Reuters by telephone.

"My next move is not decided."

A senior technocrat appointed in 2007, Kadry survived five finance ministers in office since the 2011 uprising that overthrew former autocratic President Hosni Mubarak.

Kadry gave no explanation for his decision to quit, first reported on the Egyptian dissident Rebel Economy blog, saying he would say more on Tuesday.

A senior European diplomat said his departure was not a good omen for Egypt's hopes of wrapping up a deal on the long delayed IMF loan next month, as the government has said it aims to do.

Kadry was the one expert in the ministry who fully understood the IMF program and was able to deal with the global lender professionally, the diplomat said.

The daily El-Watan said on its website that Kadry had been under increasing pressure from the ruling Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, and in conflict with Abdallah Shehata, the FJP economic adviser to Finance Minister Al-Mursi Al-Sayed Hegazy.

Separately, the head of Egypt's bourse, Mohamed Omran, told Prime Minister Hisham Kandil he would like to leave his position at the end of his term on July 1, the state news agency MENA reported, citing an unnamed official stock exchange source.

The report did not give a reason for Omran's request, but said he had told the prime minister in August he wanted to leave the post. Kandil had asked him to stay until the end of his term, MENA said.

Mysterious hot spots observed in cool red supergiant

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Astronomers have released a new image of the outer atmosphere of Betelgeuse -- one of the nearest red supergiants to Earth -- revealing the detailed structure of the matter being thrown off the star.

The new image, taken by the e-MERLIN radio telescope array operated from the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, also shows regions of surprisingly hot gas in the star's outer atmosphere and a cooler arc of gas weighing almost as much as the Earth.

Betelgeuse is easily visible to the unaided eye as the bright, red star on the shoulder of Orion the Hunter. The star itself is huge -- 1,000 times larger than our Sun -- but at a distance of about 650 light years it still appears as a tiny dot in the sky, so special techniques combining telescopes in arrays are required to see details of the star and the region around it.

The new e-MERLIN image of Betelgeuse -- published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, shows its atmosphere extends out to five times the size of the visual surface of the star. It reveals two hot spots within the outer atmosphere and a faint arc of cool gas even farther out beyond the radio surface of the star.

The hot spots are separated by roughly half the visual diameter of the star and have a temperature of about 4,000-5,000 Kelvin, much higher than the average temperature of the radio surface of the star (about 1,200 Kelvin) and even higher than the visual surface (3,600 Kelvin). The arc of cool gas lies almost 7.4 billion kilometres away from the star -- about the same distance as the farthest Pluto gets from the Sun. It is estimated to have a mass almost two thirds that of the Earth and a temperature of about 150 Kelvin.

Lead author Dr Anita Richards, from The University of Manchester, said that it was not yet clear why the hot spots are so hot. She said: "One possibility is that shock waves, caused either by the star pulsating or by convection in its outer layers, are compressing and heating the gas. Another is that the outer atmosphere is patchy and we are seeing through to hotter regions within. The arc of cool gas is thought to be the result of a period of increased mass loss from the star at some point in the last century but its relationship to structures like the hot spots, which lie much closer in, within the star's outer atmosphere, is unknown."

The mechanism by which supergiant stars like Betelgeuse lose matter into space is not well understood despite its key role in the lifecycle of matter, enriching the interstellar material from which future stars and planets will form. Detailed high-resolution studies of the regions around massive stars like the ones presented here are essential to improving our understanding.

Dr Richards, who is based in Manchester's School of Physics and Astronomy, added: "Betelgeuse produces a wind equivalent to losing the mass of the Earth every three years, enriched with the chemicals that will go into the next generation of star and planet formation. The full detail of how these cool, evolved stars launch their winds is one of the remaining big questions in stellar astronomy.

"This is the first direct image showing hot spots so far from the centre of the star. We are continuing radio and microwave observations to help decide which mechanisms are most important in driving the stellar wind and producing these hot spots. This won't just tell us how the elements that form the building blocks of life are being returned to space, it will also help determine how long it is before Betelgeuse explodes as a supernova."

Future observations planned with e-MERLIN and other arrays, including ALMA and VLA, will test whether the hotspots vary in concert due to pulsation, or show more complex variability due to convection. If it is possible to measure a rotation speed this will identify in which layer of the star they originate.

Hagel: Syria has used chemical weapons

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says the Syrian regime has likely used chemical weapons on a "small scale."

Hagel was speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi. He says the White House has informed members of Congress that, within the last day, U.S. intelligence concluded with "some degree of varying confidence" that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime has used chemical weapons ? specifically sarin gas.

Hagel says, quote, "It violates every convention of warfare."

President Barack Obama has said the use of chemical weapons would be a "game-changer" in the U.S. position on intervening in the two-year-old Syrian civil war.

Drinking one 12-ounce sugar-sweetened soft drink a day can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes by 22 percent, study suggests

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Drinking one (or one extra)* 12oz serving size of sugar-sweetened soft drink a day can be enough to increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%, a new study suggests. The research is published in Diabetologia (the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes) and comes from data in the InterAct consortium**.

The research is by Dr Dora Romaguera, Dr Petra Wark and Dr Teresa Norat, Imperial College London, UK, and colleagues.

Since most research in this area has been conducted in North American populations, the authors wanted to establish if a link between sweet beverage consumption and type 2 diabetes existed in Europe. They used data on consumption of juices and nectars, sugar-sweetened soft drinks and artificially sweetened soft drinks collected across eight European cohorts participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC study; UK, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Sweden, France, Italy, Netherlands)***, covering some 350,000 participants.

As part of the InterAct project, the researchers did a study which included 12,403 type 2 diabetes cases and a random sub-cohort of 16,154 identified within EPIC. The researchers found that, after adjusting for confounding factors, consumption of one 12oz (336ml) serving size of sugar-sweetened soft drink per day increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 22%. This increased risk fell slightly to 18% when total energy intake and body-mass index (BMI) were accounted for**** (both factors that are thought to mediate the association between sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption and diabetes incidence). This could indicate that the effect of sugar-sweetened soft drink on diabetes goes beyond its effect on body weight.

The authors also observed a statistically significant increase in type 2 diabetes incidence related to artificially sweetened soft drink consumption, however this significant association disappeared after taking into account the BMI of participants; this probably indicates that the association was not causal but driven by the weight of participants (i.e. participants with a higher body weight tend to report higher consumption of artificially sweetened drinks, and are also more likely to develop diabetes). Pure fruit juice and nectar***** consumption was not significantly associated with diabetes incidence, however it was not possible using the data available to study separately the effect of 100% pure juices from those with added sugars.

The authors say the increased risk of diabetes among sugar-sweetened soft drink consumers in Europe is similar to that found in a meta-analysis of previous studies conducted mostly in North America (that found a 25% increased risk of type 2 diabetes associated with one 12 oz daily increment of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption).

Dr Romaguera concludes: "Given the increase in sweet beverage consumption in Europe, clear messages on the unhealthy effect of these drinks should be given to the population."

Notes

*The increased risk of 22% is for each extra 12oz sugar sweetened drink, so would apply to someone who had 1 drink versus someone who had 0, or someone who had 2 drinks versus someone who had 1, etc.

**The InterACT consortium is investigating, among other things, nutritional factors and physical activity to study the association of nutritional, dietary and physical activity behaviours with incident diabetes in the nested case-cohort study and to contribute to the analysis of gene-lifestyle interaction. It is a sub-division of the EPIC study, which was designed to investigate the relationships between diet, nutritional status, lifestyle and environmental factors and the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases.

***The centres involved were France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, UK (Oxford, Cambridge), Netherlands (Bilthoven, Utrecht), Germany (Heidelberg, Potsdam), Sweden (Umea, Malmo)

****Extra info from Dr Romaguera: The 22% figure is used as the top line because it is widely accepted by the scientific community that these models should not be adjusted for BMI. In the meta-analysis comparison with other studies from the USA, the risk is those studies is NOT adjusted by BMI. That makes it possible to compare the two sets of results (25% increased risk in North American studies versus 22% in Europe).

*****nectars (UK and USA definition) are fruit juices that have been diluted to some extent and may contain additives (sugar or sweeteners)

Apple's Pile Of Cash Is Still Growing, Up 6% To $145 Billion

Pile of cashApple now has $145 billion in cash on hand — a 5.8 percent increase over the past three months. The company last reported that they had $137.1 billion in cash back on December 30. To put this into perspective, with $140 million, you can produce the movie Spider-Man. Apple has enough money to produce a thousand blockbusters. Apple could use its cash to acquire some companies. But with more than $145,000,000,000, you can acquire a lot of companies. For example, Facebook’s market capitalization is only $61.89 billion. If Apple would use all of its cash to acquire Facebook, it would still pay a nice premium. With $9.5 billion in profit and little operating expenses, Apple’s cash will likely grow over the next three months. Yet, Apple doesn’t seem to be ready to use its cash on hand (short-term investments). Now that Apple is handing out dividends, its cash is one of the remaining issues with investors. Shareholders wants Apple to actually use this cash for something — acquisitions, big investments dividends or other financial activities (such as a share buyback). The company likes to tap into its deep pockets to secure deals with its production line in order to make sure its supply chain is efficient. But that still leaves a lot of cash. Apple is still sitting on over $145 billion without any plan in sight.

DALLAS (AP) ? AT&T lost phone subscribers from its contract-based plans for the first time in the latest quarter, in a sign that growth in the industry is stalling now that most Americans have smartphones.

The company said Tuesday that it added a net 296,000 devices to its contract-based plans in the first quarter, but the gain was due entirely to tablets, which carry lower monthly fees.

Excluding tablets, the carrier lost a net 69,000 devices from its contract-based plans, the first such loss.

When AT&T was the only U.S. carrier with the iPhone between 2007 and 2011, it regularly added more than the 1 million net new devices to its contract-based plans per quarter.

Overall, the shift resulted in slower growth in what people pay on average for each device every month. Average revenue per user under contract rose 0.9 percent, down from a 1.9 percent gain in the fourth quarter through December.

The results mean AT&T, the nation's second largest wireless carrier, is slipping further behind market leader Verizon Wireless, which said last week that it added a net 677,000 devices to contract-based plans in the quarter.

Verizon ended the quarter with 93.2 million devices under contract compared to 70.7 million for AT&T.

The results came as AT&T reported a 3 percent gain in net income to $3.7 billion, or 67 cents per share, for the quarter that ended March 31.

Excluding the sale of an advertising business, adjusted earnings came to 64 cents per share, matching the expectation of analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue fell nearly 2 percent to $31.36 billion, below the $31.74 billion that analysts were looking for. Excluding the ad business sale, revenue would have risen 0.9 percent.

"We had a solid start to the year," Chief Financial Officer John Stephens told analysts on a conference call.

AT&T racked up 6 million smartphone activations in the quarter, including 4.8 million iPhones. That was lower than the busy Christmas quarter in which it had a record 10.2 million smartphone activations, of which 8.6 million were iPhones.

Stephens acknowledged that the addition of more tablets to the network is negatively affecting average per-device spending. He said that low-price cellular data plans for tablets may not be permanent.

"We put that in place to see how it would work, to stimulate demand," he said. "I won't suggest to you that it is a permanent offering, but I will suggest to you we will continue to monitor it and make our decisions as we go forward."

Shares of the Dallas company fell 1.8 percent to $38.31 in after-hours trading following the release of the earnings report.

West ramps up accusations of systemic repression in Turkmenistan

By Robert Evans

GENEVA (Reuters) - Western states on Monday ratcheted up accusations against Turkmenistan that it allows torture and crushes free speech but Asian and Islamic states came to the defense of the natural gas-rich republic in the main U.N. human rights forum.

Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov wields almost unlimited power in his Central Asian desert nation, a former Soviet republic which holds the world's fourth largest known reserves of natural gas.

At a special session of the 47-member United Nations Human Rights Council, a senior Turkmen official denied allegations of relentless, systemic repression and said the government was working for democratization and development.

Islamic and Asian states backed that argument, saying Turkmenistan had boosted economic growth and improved living, health and educational standards of its 5.5 million people.

The United States told the gathering that Turkmen officials "are not held accountable for torture or other human rights violations" while journalists, ethnic and religious minorities and critics of the government were detained or intimidated.

Australia said "fundamental freedoms remain heavily curtailed" in the reclusive Central Asian republic.

Norway and Chile said Turkmen women suffered widely from domestic violence while the government stood by, and the Netherlands and Poland called on the Ashgabat government to allow in U.N. investigators on torture and other abuses.

The special session was part of the rights council's Universal Periodic Review in which every U.N. member state has its record examined - for three hours - once every four years.

The procedure has been criticized by independent rights groupings which argue that it gives no time for a proper review and allows a country's allies to shield it from full examination by showering it with plaudits.

Among countries praising Turkmenistan were North Korea, Belarus, Sri Lanka and Iran as well as fellow ex-Soviet neighbors Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan - all frequently under Western fire for alleged human rights abuses.

Berdymukhamedov, who is widely referred to as "Arkadag" (The Patron) in Turkmenistan, has ruled since the death of his autocratic predecessor Saparmurat Niyazov in 2006.

Berdymukhamedov has eased controls on small-scale entrepreneurs and the Turkmen economy has grown rapidly on the back of high world energy prices.

SES, Inverto, Abilis and MaxLinear revolutionise satellite TV home distribution with industry's first IP-LNB
New IP-LNB delivers satellite broadcast content to TVs, tablets, smartphones and PCs connected to the home IP network

?

?

?

LUXEMBOURG, Apr 22, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- SES (nyse paris:SESG) (luxx:SESG), Inverto, Abilis and MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE: MXL) today announced that they have been jointly designing an essential component for cost-effective IP distribution of satellite television to the home - the first low-noise block down-converter (LNB) that will incorporate eight-channel satellite-to-IP bridging technology.

The IP-LNB is a prototype device that will deliver eight concurrent channels from any of the transponders of a satellite orbital position. These channels may be forwarded via IP unicast or multicast to fixed and portable devices. Satellite signals will be distributed via Ethernet, power-line communications (PLC) or a Wi-Fi local area network (LAN). The technology can be used for free-to-air (FTA) or pay TV applications.

"The IP-LNB will give satellite television providers and consumers new options for distributing unmatched quality satellite television to multiple TVs, computers and tablets over IP at the lowest cost," said Thomas Wrede, Vice President of SES Reception Systems. "When we committed ourselves to making SAT>IP an open standard, we envisioned this type of innovation. It is exciting to see it now come to fruition."

The LNB is a crucial element of a satellite system, receiving signals collected by the satellite dish, amplifying and converting them to intermediate frequencies to be carried to the set-top box (STB).

By locating the satellite reception and the IP bridging functions in the antenna the IP-LNB will enable satellite content distribution to the home over a single Ethernet cable. The IP-LNB may be powered over that same cable through Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, greatly reducing the overall system cost and power consumption.

This new technology enables the satellite signal to be sampled digitally directly at the antenna, making the satellite spectrum data and other link-quality metrics accessible over the LAN. These advancements greatly simplify the dish installation and enable remote monitoring from the LAN.

Designing such a novel LNB requires significant advances in satellite chipset and real-time IP streaming software technology in order to meet the unique system requirements on the size, power consumption, long-term reliability and price point required for a commercially viable outdoor unit (ODU).

The new device will combine SES' SAT>IP protocol innovations, MaxLinear's Full-Spectrum Capture(TM) (FSC(TM)) DVB-S2 receiver IC, Abilis' TB101 Broadcast to Broadband Bridge(TM) (B(3)(TM)) SoC, and Inverto's software stacks and a new high-performance LNB product design. Together, these technologies have produced a compact, cost effective and low-power eight-channel IP-LNB.

Availability

The IP-LNB technology was demonstrated at SES' Industry Days 2013 conference that was held on April 18 and 19 in Luxembourg. The parties are currently engaging with key customers to characterize various parameters for a first commercial IP-LNB product and its deployment schedule.

Netflix shares jump as subscribers rise; margins seen following

By Ryan Vlastelica and Supantha Mukherjee

(Reuters) - Netflix Inc shares shot up 24 percent on Tuesday to their highest level since September 2011, after the movie streaming service said it added more than 2 million U.S. subscribers last quarter.

The latest jump made Netflix's stock the fourth-most pricey in the Standard & Poor's 500 on a valuation basis.

Analysts rushed to revise their forecasts for Netflix's earnings, reasoning that the company's push for exclusive content will boost margins in coming quarters. They also lifted their targets for the stock price, which has now more than quadrupled in the past eight months.

The shares were up $42 at $216.66 in morning Nasdaq trading after Netflix posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit late Monday.

"Netflix is seeing a bit of an extreme reaction today," said Jeff Morris, head of U.S. equities at Standard Life Investments in Boston, which has $272 billion in assets. "There were questions about (the company's business model), but it's putting up good subscriber growth and seems to be delivering on original content."

The stock is now trading at roughly 165 times estimated 2013 earnings per share. By contrast, the average price-earnings ratio for the sector is about 14.

Only three other stocks in the Standard & Poor's 500 index have loftier multiples: Vulcan Materials Co at 402; Prologis Inc at 210; and Amazon.com Inc at 182.

Despite the already big jump, at least eight brokerages, including JPMorgan, BMO Capital, Morgan Stanley, Barclays and Oppenheimer & Co, raised their price targets on the stock by as much as $75 to as much as $250.

"Netflix is in an enviable position with its scale and can opportunistically bid on content not available to the company previously," Morgan Stanley analyst DeVitt said in a note.

Netflix now has 29.2 million U.S. customers for its $8-a-month U.S. streaming service, the largest part of its business.

"The solid performance in the March quarter combined with a better-than-expected outlook for the June quarter, aided by the upcoming release of 'Arrested Development: Season 4,' augurs well for the company in 2013 and beyond," BMO Capital Markets Corp analysts said.

"Arrested Development", dropped by network TV but later revived on Netflix, will premiere on May 26 with the entire 15-episode season available to stream online.

"Four billion hours were streamed in the quarter - highlighting how the company's subscriber base is increasingly using Netflix for a growing share of their viewing trends," BMO said.

Besides boosting subscriber numbers, the push for exclusive content will probably increase margins in line with Netflix's premium TV network peers, DeVitt wrote.

Netflix has been pushing for original shows, and its February release of "House of Cards", a drama series starring Kevin Spacey, generated plenty of attention just as more viewers turn onto Internet video downloading.

"Netflix is racing to ramp up original hours of versatile programming in an effort to build a brand identity with different segments of the market," Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Vasily Karasyov said.

The big run-up in Netflix shares has probably hit short sellers, but there are still many betting against the stock.

The short interest position in Netflix for the most recent period, from the end of March, was 13.4 percent of shares outstanding, compared with less that 2 percent for blue chip companies such as Google Inc and IBM Corp, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine data.

Short interest in Netflix peaked at about 38 percent in April 2008.

Short sellers profit from betting stocks will fall. They borrow and then sell shares, waiting for the price to drop so they can buy them at the lower price.

Formula can calculate a person's speed by just looking at their footprints

Apr. 22, 2013 ? Two Spanish scientists have designed an equation that provides a highly accurate estimate of an individual's speed based on stride length. They used data from professional athletes and walking and running experiments on a beach in order to come up with the equation. The result has applications in the study of fossil trackways of human footprints.

In the spring of 2008, 14 palaeontology students from the Complutense University of Madrid ran along a beach in Asturias (Spain) at the request of a planetary geologist who was a friend of their fieldwork director. Javier Ruiz, from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), and his colleague Ang?lica Torices, from the University of Alberta (Canada), just out of curiosity, wanted to check how accurately an individual's speed could be calculated based on their tracks.

The results, published in 2013 in the journal Ichnos, show that, without needing any other data such as leg length, they were able to achieve quite a high degree of accuracy, with a margin of error of 10 to 15%.

"For humans, we are able to calculate speed based on stride length alone with a very good degree of accuracy," Javier Ruiz said.

The authors applied their formula to estimate the speed at which the humans were travelling who left the Pleistocene era fossil trackways found in the Willandra Lakes Region of Australia.

"A previous study had made a very elaborate calculation of their speed but the results were as high as if they had been professional athletes" Ruiz explained. His results show a reasonable sprint pace.

In order to come up with their equation, Ruiz and Torices compared the data obtained in the experiments with the students with data from professional athletes who compete in 100 and 400-metre races.

Up to now, the individual's leg length or at least an estimate of the length was required to calculate speed based on tracks. An equation formulated by the British zoologist Robert McNeil Alexander in 1976 was used which he based solely on data obtained from his children running.

Ruiz and Torices measured the speed and stride length of the students as they ran along the beach and applied Alexander's equation. "The data fit with the equation very well," Ruiz explained, "Alexander did a good job with very little statistical data but with a large mathematical basis and we have seen empirically that his equation is correct."

The speed of elite athletes

In the case of the athletes, the researchers had data on speed and stride length but not limb length, which led Ruiz to modify the equation so that this piece of data was not needed. "There was a very good degree of accuracy with the new equation with a 15% margin of error, even better than the equation that was generally used whose margin of error was 50%."

In addition, the calculation works perfectly well both whether the individuals are running or walking and this was very surprising according to Ruiz. "There is a little more variability in running but even so it works very well."

Despite that fact that the speed calculation is very accurate, Ruiz admits that it cannot be applied in an absolute and unequivocal manner but rather statistically. "Strangely, sometimes 400 and 100-metre athletes have the same stride length but run at different speeds. What the body does is try to optimise how energy is used at a given speed."

BOSTON Stress triggered neuropsychiatric disorders take an enormous personal, social and economic toll on society. In the US more than half of adults are exposed to at least one traumatic event throughout their lives. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating anxiety disorder associated with exposure to a traumatic event outside the range of normal human experience. PTSD typically follows a chronic, often lifelong, course. Patients have diminished quality of life, are more likely to manifest other psychiatric disorders such as depression and six times more likely as demographically matched controls to attempt suicide. Prevention and treatment of PTSD remains a challenge with improved therapies needed to help save billions of dollars in medical care and provide enormous society benefit.

Based on a variety of studies in humans and animals it has been suggested that neuropeptide Y (NPY), a peptide that acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain, has therapeutic potential for PTSD. This naturally occurring peptide is one of the widely expressed inside and outside of the brain with diverse functions. Human studies indicate that NPY is associated with resilience to development of PTSD or helps improve recovery from harmful effects of traumatic stress. Injections into the brain of rodents attenuated some of the behavioral responses related to stress associated neuropsychiatric disorders. However systemic administration of NPY will likely have undesirable side effects, especially on the cardiovascular system.

This study delivered NPY to rats by intranasal infusion, a non-invasive procedure to bypass the blood brain barrier. A single infusion was administered 30 min before or immediately after exposure to single prolonged stress (SPS). Behavioral, neuroendocrine and biochemical analyses were performed 1 to 3 weeks after SPS and compared to untreated controls or to animals infused with the solution without NPY. The SPS-elicited elevation in anxiety, depressive-like behavior and hyper-arousal was reduced in the animals given intranasal NPY, and some of the features were the same as in the animals not exposed to the stress. There was a lower stress triggered rise in plasma stress hormones, such as glucocorticoids and in expression of their receptor in the hippocampus in the NPY treated animals. Intranasal NPY also modulated the response of the brain noradrenergic system to the traumatic stress of SPS.

The results demonstrated, for the first time, that rapid delivery of NPY to the brain by intranasal infusion, before or shortly after exposure to traumatic stress, has a pronounced resilient effect and ameliorates development of PTSD-like symptoms in rats. It provides proof of concept for potential of intranasal NPY for non-invasive prophylactic treatment for individuals likely to be exposed to traumatic stress, such as early responders or military personnel, as well as for early intervention after exposure to traumatic stress.

These research findings will be presented April 21st, 2013 during Experimental Biology 2013 in Boston, MA

Boston nurses tell of bloody marathon aftermath

BOSTON (AP) ? The screams and cries of bloody marathon bombing victims still haunt the nurses who treated them one week ago. They did their jobs as they were trained to do, putting their own fears in a box during their 12-hour shifts so they could better comfort their patients.

Only now are these nurses beginning to come to grips with what they endured ? and are still enduring as they continue to care for survivors. They are angry, sad and tired. A few confess they would have trouble caring for the surviving suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, if he were at their hospital and they were assigned his room.

And they are thankful. They tick off the list of their hospital colleagues for praise: from the security officers who guarded the doors to the ER crews who mopped up trails of blood. The doctors and ? especially ? the other nurses.

Nurses from Massachusetts General Hospital, which treated 22 of the 187 victims the first day, candidly recounted their experiences in interviews with The Associated Press. Here are their memories:

THEY WERE SCREAMING

Megann Prevatt, ER nurse: "These patients were terrified. They were screaming. They were crying ... We had to fight back our own fears, hold their hands as we were wrapping their legs, hold their hands while we were putting IVs in and starting blood on them, just try to reassure them: 'We don't know what happened, but you're here. You're safe with us.' ... I didn't know if there were going to be more bombs exploding. I didn't know how many patients we'd be getting. All these thoughts are racing through your mind."

SHRAPNEL, NAILS

Adam Barrett, ICU nurse, shared the patient bedside with investigators searching for clues that might break the case. "It was kind of hard to hear somebody say, 'Don't wash that wound. You might wash evidence away.'" Barrett cleaned shrapnel and nails from the wounds of some victims, side by side with law enforcement investigators who wanted to examine wounds for blast patterns. The investigator's request took him aback at first. "I wasn't stopping to think, 'What could be in this wound that could give him a lead?'"

THEIR FACES, THEIR SMILES

Jean Acquadra, ICU nurse, keeps herself going by thinking of her patients' progress. "The strength is seeing their faces, their smiles, knowing they're getting better. They may have lost a limb, but they're ready to go on with their lives. They want to live. I don't know how they have the strength, but that's my reward: Knowing they're getting better."

She is angry and doesn't think she could take care of Tsarnaev, who is a patient at another hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center: "I don't have any words for him."

THE NEED FOR JUSTICE

Christie Majocha, ICU nurse: "Even going home, I didn't get away from it," Majocha said. She is a resident of Watertown, the community paralyzed Friday by the search for the surviving suspect. She helped save the lives of maimed bombing victims on Monday. By week's end, she saw the terror come to her own neighborhood. The manhunt, she felt, was a search for justice, and was being carried out directly for the good of her patients.

"I knew these faces (of the victims). I knew what their families looked like. I saw their tears," she said. "I know those families who are so desperate to see this end."

On Friday night, she joined the throngs cheering the police officers and FBI agents, celebrating late into the night even though she had to return to the hospital at 7 a.m. the next day.

Fitness Leader Samir Becic Innovates With The Health Fitness ...

fitness 150x150 Fitness Leader Samir Becic Innovates With The Health Fitness Revolution?by Susan Wright

Many Americans see obesity as one of the biggest challenges facing the nation today. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be very difficult, so there are people and companies that dedicate their lives to health and wellness.

Among these companies are?Health Fitness Revolution and the ReSync Method, both founded by Samir Becic. I recently had the chance to sit down with Samir to learn about how he started these businesses and how they work.

Tell us about yourself first. What is your management style? Where did you go to school and work in the past?

I began my life-long dedication to health and fitness in Europe as a distinguished Martial Arts expert. It was in the structured and flowing training of Martial Arts that provided the background for the ReSync Method.

After relocating to the U.S. with a dream, determination, and talent, I soon began my career as a Personal Trainer, developing new training techniques for my clients. While I was Fitness Director for Ballys, the largest fitness facility in the U.S., I earned countless awards and recognition for my training techniques and passion for fitness.

My management style depends on the project, but I consider myself a macro-manager who, in certain situations, can be hands-on if necessary, but prefer not to be. I went to school in Bosnia, Germany, and the U.S. I went to Ruprechr Gymnasium and University of Houston (Business in Sports).

Tell us how your company started and when. Who was involved and what did each person do?

ReSync Enterprises started in 2011 but it was rebranded from my company EuroFit which I started in 2005 and had 97 locations.? ReSync Enterprises focuses on corporations, large entities including school and government.? It is based on my ReSync Method- The power of the ReSync Method comes from its simplicity?you use your own body and little else. Every muscle in the body can be trained by the body?s own movement and natural resistance, which makes the ReSync Method a perfect option for anyone who doesn?t want to spend hours in the gym or invest in costly and heavy machines. And since the ReSync Method utilizes the body?s natural resistance, it is ideal for couples, friends and families who want to spend time together working out.

Clients and trainers who have experienced the ReSync Method have consistently touted the method as indisputably more effective than traditional gym training because it utilizes muscle synchronicity, functionality, and basic exercises.

The ReSync Method has been proven not only by athletes and advanced clients, but also by clients newer to training and even those with limited range of motion and mobility. Very often, professional athletes have increased their performance while training under Samir because the ReSync Method allows them to push their bodies to their full potential without overdoing it, as they are controlled by their own body restrictions.

By using the synchronization of the body?s muscles, the ReSync Method effectively improves:

  • Strength
  • Strength endurance
  • Cardio
  • Flexibility
  • Balance

And, best of all, the ReSync method connects all these components into one very simple, very effective, fun workout.

My non-profit organization, the Health Fitness Revolution by the Samir Becic Foundation was awarded 501(c)(3) in December 2012 and aims to change the way people think about health and fitness, incorporating proper exercise and nutrition practices into the very fabric of family and society.

At the heart of the Health & Fitness Revolution is the ReSync Method?a worldclass training philosophy that uses the body?s own resistance to increase balance, strength and speed. The ReSync Method teaches families how to exercise together, without the need for expensive gym memberships and dangerous fitness machines, as a way to build stronger, healthier families.

The Health & Fitness Revolution will achieve its goals by arming Americans with tools to live a healthy lifestyle. Through a variety of channels in the community, like schools, churches, community centers and corporations, the Health & Fitness Revolution will host events and workshops to educate children and their parents about the fundamentals of physical fitness and nutrition.

Tell us an interesting story about your business. Were there any ?wow? moments? Anything funny or unusual?

Yes, my wow moment was before I came to American from Germany, I had an American Dream.? It was to live in the country where all dreams are all possible. I left Germany, the strongest European economy, to accomplish my dream, and when I arrived to America, I realized that low productivity caused by obesity, was, in my mind, threatening the possibility of an American Dream. So I started doing interviews all over the media in order to prove, which was the beginning of a movement. America is one of the greatest nations in the world and should be the healthiest nation in the world?the model for healthy living around the globe. But the unhealthy lifestyle of many Americans and the alarming rates of obesity among youth prove otherwise. The Health & Fitness Revolution, a movement spearheaded by the Samir Becic Foundation, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to making America a healthier nation.

What is your role in the company now?

I am the CEO of both ReSync Enterprises (my for profit company) and the president of the board of the directors of the Health Fitness Revolution by Samir Becic Foundation (my non-profit company).

What does your company sell and how does it make money?

ReSync Enterprises works with corporations in implementing healthy lifestyle into the daily life of its employees. By doing so, we boost productivity and employee happiness.? As the 21st?century continues to unfold in its fast-paced manner, corporations are realizing that the company?s future growth is highly dependent on the health and fitness of its employees.

Every corporation struggles to maintain its niche and relevance in its market, while still caring for and appreciating its employees. But the truth is that overweight and unhealthy employees cost corporations an astronomical amount in sick days, reduced productivity, and health premiums.

For this reason, many corporations today are more aware of the benefits of having a healthy team and promoting fitness and healthy nutrition within their business practices. A growing trend within companies is to offer its employees incentives or other rewards for attending exercise classes regularly or losing weight within a given time period. Some companies are even offering partial payments for gym memberships or discounts at businesses that sell pre-packaged healthy meals.

Health Fitness Revolution is a non-profit that aims to help society and functions off of people beliefs in its goals and messages.

Which companies do you?consider to be competitors?

The movement Health Fitness Revolution, does not consider any one to be a competitor because we support every cause that is associated with improving the healthy lifestyle of society in general.? We support both non-profit and for profit companies whose main goal is to improve healthy lifestyle through physical fitness, healthy nutrition, social, mental, and spiritual balance.? We have many collaborations all over the United States that have similar goals as we do and we see them all as partners because the issue of obesity has reached such epic proportions that we need all the manpower to fight this disease and its needs.

What makes your?products and services better than competitors? offerings??

We try to improve ourselves on a daily basis.? The only real competitor we have is ourselves.? By trying to improve ourselves on being more focused, disciplined, knowledgeable, providing quality work, healthy work atmosphere, and seeing ourselves as a company that is trying to improve the health of society.? By doing this noble cause, we are motivated beyond your regular 9-5 job.

Does the company have any cash flow from financing activities? What is your?total debt, if any??

Both ReSync Enterprises and the Health Fitness Revolution movement (Samir Becic Foundation) have no debts.? We are very conservative in terms of our expansion and our money in vs. money out ratio.? We run our company with a net profit over 35%, and make sure that before we hire somebody, we have a minimum of 9 months pay in advance without hurting our 35% net profit.? By doing so, we are creating workforce stability and mental reassure among our employees.? Because of this, we are more productive, and the work environment is more relaxed.? Our goal is to have 1000 employees by 2015.? To do so, our accounting needs to be extremely precise.

Where do you see the company in five years in terms of revenue and profitability?

I see Health Fitness Revolution (Samir Becic Foundation) to be a minimum of $100 million non-profit.? ReSync Enterprises will be a $50 million company.

Tell us about any patents or other IP.

We are in the process of patenting and trademarking the ReSync Method and Health Fitness Revolution.? Also we are trademarking and patenting the Health Revolution and the Fitness Revolution.

Have you faced any regulatory hurdles, or anticipate any in the future?

Yes, we are facing regulatory hurdles on a daily basis with the pharmaceutical companies.? Health Fitness Revolution is in a war?against obesity and unhealthy lifestyle (a positive and peaceful war).? Pharmaceutical companies are not wizards. They don?t have a magic wand to heal you, they are artificial and they can only help you so much. ?You have more control over your body than you think- you can control, manage, or completely avoid 60 to 70% of known chronic conditions with physical fitness, healthy nutrition, and mental balance.

Is there anything else you?d like to add?

I founded the Health Fitness Revolution movement so that an extremely motivated group of people were given a chance to create a healthier and fitter world. This?Revolution?is about healthy lifestyle, not weight loss and dieting as you know it!

Americans are the biggest consumer of?weight loss products?(80%) in the world, yet still lead the world in obesity and unhealthy lifestyle. ?The percentage of American children and adolescents who are considered overweight or obese has?tripled?since?1970.

Several?chronic conditions?can be controlled and avoided with healthy lifestyle and exercise, including: cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, infertility, hypertension, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, depression, anxiety, stress, and many more. ?More than?70%?of adults across the United States are already being diagnosed with a chronic disease and more than?75%?of the nation?s healthcare cost being spent on managing and treating these conditions. ?The treatment of the seven most common chronic diseases, coupled with productivity losses,?costs?the U.S. economy?more than $1 trillion?dollars annually. Columbia University researchers project that there will be?$48 to $66 billion?added to current health care costs?each year?between now and 2030.

Being overweight and obese is a real problem-?250 million Americans?fall into this category and?360,000 Americans?die every year from diseases directly related to obesity and unhealthy lifestyle. ?Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the US.

1.8 billion people?worldwide are overweight and obese,?65% of the world?s population?live in countries where being overweight and obese kills more people than being underweight.Because of these alarming obesity rates,?this generation of children will be the first to live shorter lives than their parents. Worldwide, more than?40 million children?under the age of 5 were overweight or obese. ?Domestically, over?1/3 of American children?are overweight or obese.?25% of US children?spend?4 hours or more?watching TV daily instead of being physically active. ?Let?s socialize with our children in a physically friendly environment instead of socializing while eating food or watching TV. ?Children are the future, let?s make sure they have a bright one.

West, Texas, residents seek normalcy after deadly plant explosion

A man lowers a flag to half-staff in downtown West, Texas ( Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)

WEST, Texas--If there?s one absolute truth in life, it?s that very few things can stop a little old lady from getting her hair done. Not ill health?and, it turns out, not even a deadly explosion.

On Wednesday a fire and subsequent explosion at the West Fertilizer Plant here leveled five city blocks, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 160. Some 60 people remain unaccounted for, Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn said on Friday. At least 150 homes and buildings?including a nursing home and an elementary school?were damaged or destroyed.

But on Friday morning at the Headquarters Beauty Salon on Main Street, Dorothy Kucera was holding court as she does most Fridays from under the blow dryer chair. Her short wet hair had just been freshened with a brunette rinse and wrapped in tiny curlers. And as the dryer purred, she and five other ladies in the salon gossiped about what was going on in town?only this week, the topic was a little more serious.

Kucera?s home is just blocks from the plant. She and her husband, Jerry, had just eaten dinner when the fire broke out. When she saw the flames, she called to her husband, who had been washing dishes, to come outside and look at the huge fire which was rapidly expanding.

?I said, ?Jerry, you?ve gotta see this,?? she recalled to a rapt audience at the salon on Friday, including a pair of stylists and a tiny elderly woman, whose blueish-gray hair was being unwrapped from curlers.

Kucera said her husband, who uses a walker, at first didn?t want to come out and instead was peering out a window above their kitchen sink. But he did after she insisted?and within seconds, the plant exploded, sending up a plume of smoke she likened to something she?d seen in photos of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

?That thing just blew,? she said, matter-of factly. The windows in her house shattered, and the force caused her garage door to buckle, preventing her from getting access to her car to escape. She added that if her husband had been still standing at the kitchen window, he would have been seriously injured ?because it was just right there.?

Soon they were evacuated and moved to a local hotel, where they?ve been staying since the explosion. They haven?t been allowed to go back to their house, Kucera said, "And I don't know when we will."

As she spoke about that night, she occasionally paused to update the gaggle on what was happening with other friends. ?Barbara?s windows are all blown out,? she said, at one point. And then she spoke of those whom she had heard were dead, whispering their names.

?Nobody knows for sure, but people are talking, and we?ll know soon enough,? Kucera said. ?This is a small town.?

Indeed, in a town of less than 3,000 people, everybody knows somebody who was killed or injured or displaced. And many residents are trying to figure out how to cope.

For some, like the ladies at Headquarters, it's keeping their weekly hair appointments. For others, it's opening their stores in hopes of seeing their beloved customers.

West?s tiny downtown district, which sits about a quarter-mile south of the explosion site, survived mostly intact?though many storefronts had their windows blown out by the force of the explosion.

But the damage was sporadic. The West Furniture Store along Oak Street had its entire glass storefront blown out, but less than a block away, shelves of old glassware?including fancy stemware and dishes?displayed in the window of an antique store were untouched, as though nothing had happened.

But many businesses here remained closed?in part, one local said, because the owners had family who had been killed in the blast.

On Friday morning, dozens of television crews crowded the streets, shooting footage of broken glass in the street and trying to interview anyone about what they had heard and seen on Wednesday.

At the West Thrift Shop, the windows were boarded up, but it was open. Inside, owner Maria Galvan was giving away her inventory, including clothes and blankets to the residents who had been displaced.

Galvan had been at a Wal-Mart in Hillsboro, about 15 miles up Interstate 35 from West, when the blast occurred. She said the explosion had caused stuff to fly off the shelves at the store, prompting people to run through the aisles yelling for people to evacuate. ?We thought the store had been struck by lightning,? Galvan said.

Only later did she hear the news of the fertilizer plant. While her husband urged her to stay away from her store, Galvan came to work anyway on Thursday?anxious to help people who had been affected by the blast in any way that she could.

But mainly, Galvan said, she was just hoping that her customers and friends would come through the door and let her know that they were OK.

?I just want to see their faces,? she said, breaking into tears. ?There?s so much we don?t know, and it?s been hard to reach anybody. I just want to know that people are OK.?

Wiping her eyes, she added, ?I just want to know that things will be OK again. That we will be OK.?

But that?s an open question for a small town still trying to gauge the impact of what happened.

State and local officials briefed reporters at a local fairgrounds complex that is usually home to West Fest, an annual celebration of the town?s Czech history. The officials have struggled to give definitive numbers on the casualties, in part because no one was keeping track as people were evacuated during Wednesday?s chaos.

On Friday, a spokesman for the State Department of Public Safety estimated that of the 12 confirmed dead so far, 11 of them were first responders. That?s roughly half of West?s volunteer firefighter force?all of whom were well known in town.

?Everybody knows somebody,? a woman said, as she was sweeping up glass outside a closed flower store on Oak Street. She declined to give her name. ?This is going to be a big wound.?

Headquarters, which has been in business for 39 years, reopened on Thursday. Its front windows were blown out and remain covered by plywood.

On Thursday, all of the salon's appointments came in except for three older women, including two who lived near the plant. Owner Marcella Klaus said she had been trying to reach them to make sure they were OK and was planning to reach out to their families today, just in case.

?I was surprised about how many people have kept their appointments,? Klaus said. ?That I haven?t heard from those three makes me worry.?

At the salon, the women seemed to find comfort in their routine. And Kucera was their queen bee of information amid great uncertainty about the fate of many of their friends and neighbors.

?If anybody in this town knows anything, she does,? Klaus said lovingly, as Kucera updated her friends.

At one point, Kucera just paused and exhaled.

?We?re alive,? she said, looking at the women, who nodded in return. ?We?ve got all our babies. Even our cats.?
