In the History of ?October Surprises,? There?s Nothing Like Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy has already disrupted early voting in some states, altered President Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney?s campaign schedules, and consumed the news cycle for days. There?s little precedent for a storm of this magnitude making landfall so close to a presidential election, though there is a history of surprise events shaking up an election in the days before voters head to the polls. Here?s a list of six others, compiled by National Journal.

Last-minute events tend not to alter the fundamental dynamics of a presidential race. But bad news for a struggling campaign can depress hopes for a late revival, and in recent years?as elections have become tighter contests?even small shocks have been accused of having an outsize effect.

The storm currently lashing the East Coast is expected to threaten lives and leave millions without power. If Obama oversees a robust response effort, that could help his chances?and Team Obama should be thankful that the storm is landing this week, rather than on Nov. 6. A 2007 study found that ?for every one inch increase in rain above its Election Day normal, the Republican presidential candidate received approximately an extra 2.5 percent of the vote.?

1. PRESIDENT JOHNSON CALLS A BOMBING HALT.?Ahead of the 1968 election, Republican candidate Richard Nixon?s chances of defeating then-Vice President Hubert Humphrey were good. The war in Vietnam had bitterly divided Democrats, and President Johnson?s civil-rights reforms had pushed many Southern Democrats into Nixon?s camp. Five days before the 1968 election, Johnson announced a bombing halt in Vietnam?a move that some speculated was timed to help Humphrey?s bid. But the announcement did not change the contours of the race, and came too late to buoy support for Johnson?s veep.

2. KISSINGER DECLARES ?PEACE IS AT HAND.??News of peace negotiations in Vietnam gave a late-in-the-game jolt to President Nixon?s reelection campaign. Twelve days before the election, national-security adviser Henry Kissinger held a press conference announcing progress in peace talks, declaring, ?Peace is at hand.? Kissinger?s words didn?t win the election for Nixon?he was already well positioned to defeat Democratic nominee George McGovern?but talk of peace from the Nixon camp undermined McGovern?s peace platform. The war dragged on for over two years after Kissinger?s statement, and Kissinger acknowledged in a 1982 interview that his words could have been better chosen.

3. CARTER TRIES TO GET THE HOSTAGES HOME.?The Iranian hostage crisis plagued President Carter throughout his bid for reelection. The hostages, seized at the American Embassy in Tehran in November 1979, were held captive in Iran throughout 1980. Carter?s attempts to use economic pressure to release them didn?t produce immediate results, and his attempt to spring the hostages through a helicopter rescue failed. In September, Iran contacted the Carter administration with a proposal to end the crisis, and negotiations continued through October. Rumors swirled that Carter would announce a release before Election Day, but Carter failed to finagle a hostage release before his defeat at the polls. Although the Carter administration negotiated the release of the hostages before Ronald Reagan took the oath of office, success came too late to alter the American public?s dim view of Carter?s foreign policy.

4. THE IRAN-CONTRA SCANDAL CASTS A SHADOW. In the final days of President George H.W. Bush's run for reelection, an indictment in the Iran-Contra investigation issued on Oct. 30, 1992, revived memories of Reagan-era scandal days. Independent counsel Lawrence Walsh indicted former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger?for the second time?for secretly selling arms to Iran and lying about it to Congress. The grand-jury investigation went on to release evidence that Bush had been involved in the decision to make the arms sales while serving as Reagan?s vice president, an involvement Bush had denied. Bush?s reelection bid was already a long shot, but new evidence of scandal and mismanagement did nothing to help his chances.

5. GEORGE W. BUSH?S DRUNK-DRIVING RECORD SURFACES.?The revelation that Republican nominee George W. Bush had been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in 1976 came five days before the 2000 election. In his memoir, Bush adviser Karl Rove claims that the report cost Bush five states?and accused Democrats of leaking the news to boost Democratic nominee Vice President Al Gore. ?Did this last-minute revelation of Bush?s decades-old DUI hurt?? Rove wrote, according to an memoir excerpt. ?Yes, a lot.? The revelation knocked the campaign off-message, raised alarms with Bush?s credibility, and diminished support for Bush among evangelical and socially conservative voters, Rove wrote.

?6.?OSAMA BIN LADEN SENDS A MESSAGE.?A video message from al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden gave President George W. Bush?s reelection campaign an October boost, and Bush?s Democratic rival, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, later blamed the video for his loss. "I believe that 9/11 was the central deciding issue in this race," Kerry told NBC?s Meet the Press in January 2005. "And the tape--we were rising in the polls up until the last day when the tape appeared. We flatlined the day the tape appeared and went down on Monday." The video led voters to feel less secure about electing a new president while the nation was at war, Kerry suggested. In the video, bin Laden referenced the U.S. election: ?Your security is not in the hands of Kerry or Bush or al-Qaida. Your security is in your own hands,? said the architect of the Sept. 11?attacks.

The Colombian government's estimate that the?FARC?makes up to $3.5 billion annually in profits from the?drug trade is staggering, but may not be entirely accurate.

Speaking at a forum organized by the University of Miami on Oct. 23, Colombian Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon provided the government?s latest figures on the illicit activities of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). According to Pinzon, the FARC makes between $2.4 and $3.5 billion annually from the drug trade. He added that of the 350 tons of cocaine produced in Colombia annually, some 200 can be linked back to the guerrillas.

Whereas the FARC were believed to have some 20,000 fighters at their peak in 2000, Pinzon said that they currently number 8,147, a drop of more than 50 percent in the past decade. Still, he noted that the rebels are ?a very different organization? than before, having lost several top commanders in recent years.

InSight Crime Analysis

Estimating the size of the FARC?s total budget is an inexact science. Pinzon?s estimate of the rebels? profits from the drug trade differs widely from a recent calculation released by the Attorney General?s Office, which put their total profits at around $1.1 billion. Both of these assessments are far higher than the United Nations Development program?s calculation in 2003, which listed the FARC?s annual income at no more than $342 million, with $204 million coming from the drug trade.

Additionally, Pinzon?s assertion that the FARC are ?linked? to nearly two-thirds of cocaine produced in Colombia is a deceptively broad statement. These links can range from involvement in overseeing the early stages of coca cultivation and processing to directly exporting shipments of the drug into neighboring countries like Venezuela or Ecuador. While the guerrillas have been known to participate in the latter, the former arrangement is more common.

Ultimately it may be best to take Pinzon?s figures with a grain of salt. He is likely playing the hardline "bad cop" at the same time as the government enters into peace talks with the guerrillas to try to end the country's five-decade-old conflict. At the negotiating table the FARC are recognized as having political aspirations and their involvement in the drug trade is barely on the agenda for the talks. By focusing on the rebels? criminal activities in his public comments, Pinzon may be sending a signal to FARC leaders that a failure to follow through on the peace process could see them permanently labelled as nothing more than "narco-terrorists."

Neighbors Pull Elderly Couple From Burning Home | WREG.com ...

basswood fire

(Memphis) Neighbors in the Fox Meadows area helped rescue an elderly couple trapped inside their burning home this morning.

The fire broke out at around midnight in the 3000 block of Basswood.

Two different neighbors noticed the house was on fire, broke out the front window of the home and pulled the woman and her husband to safety.

Larry Redwood doesn?t consider himself a hero.

He said he was just doing the right thing, ?If you see someone who needs help you help them. I mean, if society was more like that we?d be in a much better world right now.?

Fire officials said the fire was electrical in nature and started in a utility room.

The house did have a working smoke detector.

C?est difficile: Researchers develop cocktail of bacteria that eradicates Clostridium difficile infection in mice

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? In a new study out today, researchers used mice to identify a combination six naturally occurring bacteria that eradicate a highly contagious form of Clostridium difficile, an infectious bacterium associated with many hospital deaths. Three of the six bacteria have not been described before. This work may have significant implications for future control and treatment approaches.

The researchers found that this strain of C. difficile, known as O27, establishes a persistent, prolonged contagious period, known as supershedding that is very difficult to treat with antibiotics. These contagious 'supershedders' release highly resistant spores for a prolonged period that are very difficult to eradicate from the environment. Similar scenarios are likely in hospitals.

C. difficile can cause bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain and is a contributing factor to over 2,000 deaths in the UK in 2011. It lives naturally in the body of some people where other bacteria in the gut suppress its numbers and prevent it from spreading. If a person has been treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic such as clindamycin, our bodies' natural bacteria can be destroyed and the gut can become overrun by C. difficile. The aggressive strain of C. diff analysed in this study has been responsible for epidemics in Europe, North America and Australia.

"We treated mice infected with this persistent form of C. diff with a range of antibiotics but they consistently relapsed to a high level of shedding or contagiousness," says Dr Trevor Lawley, first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "We then attempted treating the mice using faecal transplantation, homogenized faeces from a healthy mouse. This quickly and effectively supressed the disease and supershedding state with no reoccurrence in the vast majority of cases."

"This epidemic caused by C. diff is refractory to antibiotic treatment but can be supressed by faecal transplantation, resolving symptoms of disease and contagiousness."

The team wanted to take this research one step further and isolate the precise bacteria that supressed C. diff. and restored microbial balance of the gut. They cultured a large number of bacteria naturally found in the gut of mice, all from one of four main groups of bacteria found in mammals. They tested many combinations of these bacteria, until they isolated a cocktail of six that worked best to suppress the infection.

"The mixture of six bacterial species effectively and reproducibly suppressed the C. difficile supershedder state in mice, restoring the healthy bacterial diversity of the gut," says Professor Harry Flint, senior author from the University of Aberdeen.

The team then sequenced the genomes of the six bacteria and compared their genetic family tree to more precisely define them. Based on this analysis, the team found that the mixture of six bacteria contained three that have been previously described and three novel species. This mix is genetically diverse and comes from all four main groups of bacteria found in mammals.

These results illustrate the effectiveness of displacing C. diff and the supershedder microbiota with a defined mix of bacteria, naturally found in the gut.

"Our results open the way to reduce the over-use of antibiotic treatment and harness the potential of naturally occurring microbial communities to treat C. difficile infection and transmission, and potentially other diseases associated with microbial imbalances," explains Professor Gordon Dougan, senior author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "Faecal transplantation is viewed as an alternative treatment but it is not widely used because of the risk of introducing harmful pathogens as well as general patient aversion. This model encapsulates some of the features of faecal therapy and acts as a basis to develop standardized treatment mixture."

Where did all the finance bloggers go? - Abnormal Returns ...

  • abnormalreturns
  • October 23rd, 2012

In preparation for another post I just went through my RSS reader reviewing my list of investment bloggers that I follow. I noticed a large number of bloggers who for whatever reason have stopped blogging.* There has always been a fair amount of turnover in the blogging ranks, but for whatever reason it seems like the number of active, quality finance bloggers seems to be in decline.

It could be the case that more bloggers are ducking behind paywalls and subscriptions newsletters. For some time now I have seen a rise in the representation of professional blogs in the daily linkfest.? In contrast at least among professional economists it seems like blogging is in some ascendency. Nobel prize winners are just as likely to blog as their colleagues are.

A number of explanations come to mind:

  1. Other outlets for expression like StockTwits, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. have displaced blogging;
  2. The economy is getting better and bloggers have found full-time gigs;
  3. The markets are such a mess that erstwhile blogger have found better things to do with their time;
  4. Professional bloggers have displaced the efforts of amateurs;
  5. Insert your best explanation ___________.

For better or worse the benefits of blogging really only accrue over the long run. Of course anybody can make a splash with a controversial blog post or two but it takes a while to really see results. I suppose the same could be said for investing as well.

I hope that that this is just a cyclical low versus some some sort of secular decline in investing. Am I missing something? If you have some insight please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments.

*I don?t want to single out individual bloggers because people stop blogging for all sorts of good reasons.

Sean Hannity?s Fact Check: Did President Obama Go on an Apology Tour?

10:07 pm ET October 23, 2012

Hannity

During Monday night?s third presidential debate at Lynn University, Governor Mitt Romney charged that President Barack Obama went on an ?apology tour.? The president responded, ?Nothing Governor Romney just said is true, starting with this notion of me apologizing. This has been probably the biggest whopper that has been told during the course of this campaign.?

Tonight on his show, Sean Hannity showed several examples of what he says demonstrate President Obama ?apologizing? to nations around the world. Democratic strategist Steve Murphy told Hannity, ?You weren?t listening to [Obama] last night when he said we were defeating Al Qaeda.?

Hannity replied, ?He lied about Benghazi, Steve.? Murphy lashed back, ?You asked me a question here, Sean, do I get to answer or do you want to go on your own personal jihad here. [?] Barack Obama talked last night extensively about the way he has authorized 260 drone attacks.?

Murphy said that in the clips Hannity showed of President Obama, he never said ?I?m sorry? or offered an apology. David Limbaugh interjected, ?Now that is intellectually dishonest. Don?t tell me ? you liberals always say he didn?t apologize. Why are we all so up in arms about it? [Obama] said the same thing, saying America is dismissive and derisive. [?] Is that an apology or not??

Investment Flows Back into Africa

Over the past 10 years, foreign direct investment (FDI) has helped boost sustainable economic growth in many African countries.

In theory, FDI can assist to accentuate productive capacity, employment and exports. When properly managed, it can also bring secondary benefits in the form of transfers of technology, management expertise and marketing skills.

With continued liberalisation and globalisation of markets, African countries are beginning to turn toward FDI as a source of capital inflows rather than relying on official development assistance (ODA).

According to the African Development Bank, annual FDI represented 15.9% of gross fixed capital formation during 2000-2010, compared to 7.2% during the 1990s. In fact, the annual average FDI inflows to Africa over the period 2005-2010 totalled $45.4?billion ? almost three times higher than in the previous five years.

The sub-regions that benefited most were in North and West Africa. The latter attracting around 25% of the total annual FDI inflows to the continent.

Added to this, emerging economies such as China and South Korea gained ground as key investors in the continent. Particularly in the extractive sectors.

Within the African region, a country?s level of natural resources endowment (gas, oil, ores etc) is a key criterion for FDI. Data released by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in July 2012 reveal that Africa accounted on average for just 3.2% of total global annual FDI flows over the period 2005-2010, falling to a mere 2.8% in 2011.

In stark contrast with the previous year, which saw a strong recovery in Central Africa and a sharp decline in Southern Africa, large annual swings were recorded for a number of major FDI recipients, including South Africa, Nigeria, and Morocco.

The decline in FDI to Africa in 2011 reflected reduced inflows to North Africa, largely as a result of the political and social instability in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya. North Africa posted a drop of 57.9% in 2011, while Central Africa registered a 10.9% decline for the same period.

In contrast, inflows to sub-Saharan Africa grew robustly in 2011, reaching an estimated $34.8?billion, a rise of 28.1% over the previous year. This partly reflected a rebound in investment to South Africa, as well as new natural gas development opportunities in Mozambique.

Apart from Southern Africa, the other major sub-region to benefit from FDI was West Africa, which witnessed a sharp 37.1% increase in inflows compared to the previous year, to reach $16.1?billion. The principal beneficiary countries were Nigeria and Ghana, which jointly attracted about three-quarters of the sub-region?s total FDI inflows. For East Africa, inflows increased by 7.2% compared to 2.1% in the previous year.

The primary sector ? mainly the extractive industries ? remains the traditional principal beneficiary of foreign direct investments.

The continents FDI prospects for 2012 are promising, according to the latest UNCTAD World Investment Report.

Africa?s robust economic growth, combined with high commodity prices and on-going economic reforms, have improved investor perceptions of the continent.

However, the outlook is tempered by on-going fragility in the global economy which could have transmission effects in Africa. As reported by the World Bank, external shocks are already impacting negatively on net private capital flows to developing countries in general, especially FDI flows.

Start a Fire with Water and Plastic Wrap

Start a Fire with Water and Plastic WrapStart a Fire with Water and Plastic Wrap Starting a fire is an essential survival skill. If you have access to water and a bit of plastic wrap (or perhaps a clear plastic bag), with a little patience you can create a spark.

This works just like using a magnifying glass (or a clear jar) to start a fire by focusing a beam of light onto some burnable object. As the video above shows, it's a bit tricky to get the light focused through the bubble of water, but it does work.

Oxygen's ups and downs in early atmosphere and ocean

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Most researchers imagine the initial oxygenation of the ocean and atmosphere to have been something like a staircase, but with steps only going up. The first step, so the story goes, occurred around 2.4 billion years ago, and this, the so-called Great Oxidation Event, has obvious implications for the origins and evolution of the first forms of eukaryotic life. The second big step in this assumed irreversible rise occurred almost two billion years later, coinciding with the first appearances and earliest diversification of animals.

Now a team led by geochemists at the University of California, Riverside challenges the simple notion of an up-only trend for early oxygen and provides the first compelling direct evidence for a major drop in oxygen after the first rise.

"Our group is among a subset of scientists who imagine that oxygen, once it began to accumulate in the ocean-atmosphere system, may have ultimately risen to very high levels about 2.3-2.2 billion years ago, perhaps even to concentrations close to what we see today," said Timothy Lyons, a professor of biogeochemistry and the principal investigator of the project. "But unlike the posited irreversible rise favored by many, our new data point convincingly to an equally impressive, and still not well understood, fall in oxygen about 200 million years later."

According to Lyons, this drop in oxygen may have ushered in more than a billion years that were marked by a return to low-oxygen concentrations at Earth's surface, including the likelihood of an oxygen-free deep ocean.

"It is this condition that may have set the environmental stage and ultimately the clock for the advance of eukaryotic organisms and eventually animals," he said.

Study results appear online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"The time window between 2.3 and 2.1 billion years ago is famous for the largest and longest-lived positive carbon isotope excursion in Earth history," said Noah Planavsky, a recent Ph.D. graduate from UC Riverside, current postdoctoral fellow at Caltech, and first author of the research paper.

He explained that carbon isotopes are fractionated during photosynthesis. When organic matter is buried, oxygen is released and rises in the biosphere. The burial of organic matter is tracked by the positive or heavy isotopic composition of carbon in the ocean.

"Some workers have attributed the carbon isotope excursion to something other than organic burial and associated release of oxygen," Planavsky said. "We studied the sulfur isotope composition of the same rocks used for the carbon isotope analyses -- from Canada, South Africa, the U.S., and Zimbabwe -- and demonstrated convincingly that the organic burial model is the best answer."

The researchers' sulfur data point to high sulfate concentrations in the ocean, which, like today, is a classic fingerprint of high oxygen levels in the ocean and atmosphere. Sulfate, the second most abundant negatively charged ion in the ocean today, remains high when the mineral pyrite oxidizes easily on the continents and is buried in relatively small amounts in the oxygen-rich ocean.

"What is equally impressive is that the rise in oxygen was followed by a dramatic fall in sulfate and therefore oxygen," Lyons said. "Why the rise and fall occurred and how that impacted the billion years or more of ocean chemistry that followed and the life within that ocean are hot topics of research."

The research team is thrilled to have found strong chemical evidence for oxygen variability on the early Earth.

"The idea that oxygen levels at Earth's surface went up and down must be vital in any effort to understand the links between environmental and biological evolution on broad, geologic time scales," Planavsky said.

He and Lyons were joined in the study by Andrey Bekker at the University of Manitoba, Axel Hofmann at the University of Johannesburg and Jeremy Owens at UCR.

The NASA Exobiology Program supported this research. A National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship and a postdoctoral fellowship from the NSF Division of Earth Sciences covered Planavsky's salary.

You betcha: Fargo awaits TV version of hit movie

FARGO, N.D. (AP) ? Ask folks in Fargo what they first thought about the 1996 movie that made their city famous, and some will tell you they were not fans.

Some residents initially didn't appreciate the Coen brothers' dark humor or were offended by the extreme violence and depiction of Scandinavian culture. Not to mention those heavy accents on "you betcha" and "ya sure."

But the fame and cash it brought Fargo eventually brought the city around. Now, 16 years later, Fargo awaits the debut of a new cable television show by the same name, and many residents here are less apprehensive about how their hometown will be portrayed this time around. Just ask Kristin Rudrud.

"Anything the Coen brothers are going to be involved in is going to be brilliant," said Rudrud, 57, who played a supporting role in the movie and has a hankering to promote everything about her hometown. "And they love Fargo. They love this area. So it will be done in a very fun and loving way."

The Oscar-winning "Fargo" starred Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief who investigates a series of murders, and William H. Macy as a car salesman who hires two criminals, played by Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare, to kidnap his wife. In one of the final scenes, Stormare feeds Buscemi's body into a wood chipper.

Though the movie's story is mostly based in Minnesota, it made Fargo a household name for many across the country ? to the early dismay of some city folk who watched the premiere at the Fargo Theater in 1996.The theater was quiet inside and some moviegoers were offended, said Margie Bailly, who was executive director of the Fargo Theater at the time. Some residents even walked out.

"Those of us who were laughing were a little lonely," she said.

But locals later warmed up as the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and Fargo started to see the benefits from all the publicity. The theater hosted a free Oscar party with a polka band and Jell-O treats that Entertainment Weekly billed as one of the top soirees of the evening.

That event was publicized in several countries, and Fargo cashed in. Donations flowed for the theater's restoration, which dovetailed with plans to revitalize the city's downtown.

Sixteen years later, travelers looking to see the real Fargo still swing through, with many flocking to take a picture next to the iconic wood chipper, autographed on the chute by the Coen brothers and displayed at the city's main tourism center. Tourism staff hand out ear-flap hats to tourists and take pictures of them stuffing the leg of a mannequin into the Yard Shark.

"A good majority of people come in here just looking for the wood chipper," said Jayne Rieth, who works at the tourism center. She didn't like the movie on the big screen, but watched it at home recently so she could be better informed at work. And the tourism center and shops around town sell plenty of wood chipper T-shirts, shot glasses, koozies, mugs and ? of course ? ice scrapers.

City boosters hope the TV show produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, the Minnesota-born brothers behind the popular film, will add to the notoriety. No timeline has been announced by the FX Network, and John Solberg, FX's senior vice president of public relations, did not return messages left by The Associated Press.

"I don't know how it can be a bad thing for us," said Charley Johnson, president and CEO of the city's convention and visitor's bureau. "People still talk about the movie all the time."

Larry Gauper, of Fargo, a retired health insurance executive, also thinks most people are looking forward to the TV show.

"There are some people who don't like us sort of being mocked or being made fun of, but I think most people really appreciate the attention Fargo gets," Gauper said.

But "Fargo" movie fan Marnie Piehl wonders if the city has changed too much ? thanks to population growth and a revitalized downtown with high-end restaurants and bars serving craft beer and organic vegetables ? that it no longer makes sense to situate the TV show here. McDormand's character would have left Fargo years ago, Piehl said.

"That may sound funny to someone from New York, but it just doesn't fit for me anymore," she said. "The North Dakota story is not the Marge Gunderson story anymore."

Though details about the plot and characters in the FX show are scant, that hasn't stopped Fargo residents from speculating about it.

Mayor Dennis Walaker said his favorite character is the sheriff, and hopes McDormand gets a prominent role. And although Rudrud's character, Macy's wife, was killed off in the movie, she joked that there might be room for her in the adaptation.

"Well, I haven't been chopped up," she said. "There's always a possibility."

BBC faces more fallout on Savile scandal

FILE - This is a Dec. 17, 1986 file photo of British disc jockey and BBC TV presenter Jimmy Savile at Madame Tussauds museum in London. The BBC is struggling to contain a crisis sparked by allegations of serial sexual abuse against the late Jimmy Savile, a longtime children's television host. Dozens of women have come forward to say that Savile, who died in October 2011 aged 84, sexually assaulted them when they were as young as 13. London's Metropolitan Police, which is leading a national investigation, says it has identified 40 potential victims. (AP Photo/John Redman)

(AP) ? The BBC faced growing fallout Monday over sexual abuse allegations against a popular children's TV entertainer, as Prime Minister David Cameron accused the broadcaster of changing its story about why it killed a news segment on the accusations.

The powerful broadcaster tried to stem the damage, saying in a statement that a top editor had stepped down from its BBC Newsnight program after he was found to have given incomplete, inaccurate explanations for the decision to keep an investigation of the late Jimmy Savile from being broadcast in December.

The scandal is one of the worst to rock the BBC, long a key player in British public life and often cited as one of the most trusted sources of accurate, unbiased information.

"The BBC is a public service broadcaster that depends on the public trust, and anything that suggests it hasn't been truthful undermines that trust," Conservative Party lawmaker Rob Wilson told The Associated Press. "That's why this is such an important issue for them."

Police are investigating accusations against Savile and say there may be more than 200 potential victims of the entertainer, the longtime host of the BBC's "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It," recognized for his garish track suits and platinum hair.

The BBC's tough statement about editor Peter Rippon deepened the suspicion that there had been a cover-up. It is suspected of pulling the Newsnight segment because of its harsh portrayal of Savile, who was hailed as a popular fixture in children's TV when he died at 84 last year.

Wilson said the BBC has tried to evade responsibility for its long tolerance of Savile.

"They were sidestepping the story, hoping it would go away," he said. "The BBC was saying the cultural issues that led to this were in the past, but when we saw BBC looking at the Jimmy Savile issue and finding out uncomfortable things, they appeared to want to cover it up."

The BBC's backtracking prompted unusual criticism from the prime minister.

"The nation is appalled, we are all appalled by the allegations of what Jimmy Savile did and they seem to get worse by the day," Cameron said, accusing the BBC of changing its story about why it decided not to broadcast the piece.

Tim Burt, a managing partner of the Stockwell Communications crisis management firm, said BBC faces a major blow to its reputation at a time when it is entering delicate negotiations with the government about the terms of its charter.

??????????? "So to have a civil war inside on a matter of editorial judgment and the handling of potentially criminal investigations could not have come at worse time," he said.

??????????? The BBC plans to air its own investigation into its actions on a show Monday night.

Rippon is the first BBC figure directly blamed for the broadcaster's failure to properly report on abuse claims. He is stepping down immediately for the duration of the investigation.

The BBC Trust, the corporation's governing body, conceded there had been "inaccuracies in the BBC's own description of what happened in relation to the Newsnight investigation."

The BBC says Rippon's explanation of his decision in a blog post earlier was "inaccurate or incomplete in some respects."

BBC is publicly funded through its license fees and various commercial enterprises; it enjoys a large degree of independence from government but is subject to legislation passed by Parliament.

In a statement released Monday, the BBC cited three problems with Rippon's initial statements about why the segment was not aired.

The BBC said Rippon's blog indicated that Newsnight staff had no evidence against the BBC when in fact there were allegations that some of the abuse happened on BBC premises.

It also faulted Rippon for saying that all the abuse victims interviewed by the program had told police about the abuse, when in some cases the women had not done so, meaning that police were "not aware of all the allegations" against Savile.

In addition, BBC said Rippon had indicated that there was no evidence that anyone working at the Duncroft school was aware of allegations that Savile had abused girls there, when in fact there were indications that "some of the Duncroft staff knew or may have known about the abuse."

Creating a German Oktoberfest Breakfast #worldmarket | This Mama ...

World Market OktoberfestI?ve been shopping at Cost Plus World Market since the early ?80s. In fact, I consider it one of my ?must go to? places for everyday staples like Torani Sugar Free Syrups, spices and tea. It?s also the place we go to get stocking stuffers every Christmas. So when I was asked to shop World Market to write about a fall foodie theme, I jumped at the chance!

Shopping at Cost Plus World Market

With the kids off from school, I made it a family outing since we had to drive an hour to the Mall of Georgia. I had hoped that Nathan (12) and Lucie (9) would help me figure out a theme for my post. Instead, they had a great time showing me all the cool things they found from Star Trek Pez to a giant Tootsie Pop!

kids at world marketWhile the kids were off shooting at each other with pop guns and finding where the bathrooms were, I enjoyed looking at all the cool things I could buy from gluten free?Quinoa Pasta to bacon flavored Torani Syrup! However, my mind was on breakfast ? coffee, jam, Nutella, and Heinz Beans for English ?beans on toast.?

Then I saw the Bavarian display and my theme was set for a German Oktoberfest Breakfast!

German Oktoberfest Breakfast

For most people, fall means football, Halloween and pumpkins. But if you?re a beer fan, you probably think Oktoberfest, since that?s when we celebrate it here in the States. (In Germany, Oktoberfest is in September.)

My husband, Paul, lived in Berlin, Germany for six months during graduate school and I had a chance to visit him there. We traveled to Munich for Oktoberfest where we sat in large ?tents? (actually huge airplane hanger sized buildings), drank beer, ate big bread pretzels, and listened to German oompah bands play drinking songs as well as polka versions of John Denver songs. It was crazy and a lot of fun.

Paul also brought home a new family tradition from Berlin ? the German breakfast. Unlike us Americans who love eggs, bacon and pancakes on the weekend, Germans have fruit, cheese, bread, sliced cured meats, sausages, and stuff you can?t get here (like spreadable pork fat) for their Sunday breakfasts.

With the help of World Market I created a German style Oktoberfest Breakfast at home. I was surprised how easy it was to do since so many of the items I usually would get fresh at the store were available at World Market in a shelf stable form. (Great to keep in your pantry for last minute entertaining, too!)

I bought:

German breakfast

I served our German style breakfast goodies from World Market with hard boiled eggs, toast (since we didn?t have any German bread) and sliced pears. Paul had coffee and the kids and I had juice.

It was a wonderful fall day here in Athens, GA. So my family and I enjoyed our German Oktoberfest Breakfast outside while we listened to German oompah music. Well, except for having to swat yellow jackets who, I guess, like German breakfasts, too!

Hooligan jailed for 16 weeks for goalkeeper attack

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:12 a.m. ET Oct. 22, 2012

LONDON (AP) -A football hooligan has been jailed for 16 weeks for attacking former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland during a pitch invasion in a second-tier League Championship match.

Aaron Cawley, a 21-year-old from Cheltenham, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and entering the field of play when he appeared Monday at Sheffield Magistrates' Court.

Kirkland needed medical treatment after being shoved in the face and to the ground amid violent scenes during his Sheffield Wednesday side's match against Leeds at Hillsborough, which was broadcast live on British television on Friday

The Football Association has launched an investigation into the crowd trouble at the game, which also saw bottles being thrown onto the pitch and offensive chanting from both sets of fans.

Creativity: Is Creativity A Mental Illness?

I recently came across a link that was called ? ?creativity ?closely entwined with mental illness?. This was from the bbc website about a recent study that has connected creativity with mental health problems. The link can be found on the bbc website.

And after reading all that was said, I thought I would use my creativity to write an article about this. As I don?t believe that this is a discovery that is either new or groundbreaking; associating these two things together has been done for a very long time.

This also reminded me of a book by Alice Miller and the title gives away much of what the book is about ? The Untouched Key: Tracing Childhood Trauma in Creativity and Destructiveness. And the Publication Date for this book was 1990.

Society

One of the things that society likes to do is to label things. And in the area of the mind or mental health, this could relate to a certain type of behaviour or the mental tendencies that one might have.

I said the type of behaviour first, because this is typically how one comes to understand what is going on in another person?s mind. So this will then result to certain behaviour being classed as normal or abnormal, based on the criterion that has been set by the people in mental health and other such figures.

Normal Or Abnormal?

As time has gone by, it is clear to see, that what is classed as normal and what is classed as abnormal is constantly changing. What was classed as normal many years ago could be classed as abnormal today. These descriptions are never static and are always changing ? like life itself.

The ego mind functions through making judgements; this is how it hopes to ensure its own survival. It does not mean that these judgements are right or wrong or true or false, they are just how the ego mind works.

And due to the ego mind seeing everything in polarities, it will mean the judgements that are made, will be seen as the absolute truth.

Consequences

No matter what one is talking about in regards to making judgements, there will always be consequences that occur through this act. And when it comes to the area of mental health, there are potentially two sides.

On one side there is the obvious motivator to assist in making people?s lives better and to aid in the betterment of their wellbeing. And by becoming aware of a certain behaviour or mental position, they will be able to or at least try to provide the appropriate solutions.

And on the other side, there are consequences of not only becoming aware, but of also giving or attaching a label to something. This can end up creating more problems.

Associations

Here, ones ego mind will not only begin to identify with the new label that has been coined, it will also begin to take on board the emotional judgements that come with it. This could be feelings of guilt, shame, anger, frustration, anxiety and/or fear. So if one does feel that they have mental challenges, these can end up being magnified by these labels.

The Four Seasons

In nature there are the different seasons and this effects how the weather is and for some countries this will be more evident than others. Sometimes it?s hot and sometimes it cold, one can change where they live or they can stay and experience the different cycles.

When it comes to the mind, there are similarities. There are moments when it can be like the summer season and there are moments when it can be like the winter season and all that is in-between. And this will naturally vary from person to person. The childhood that one has had, ones physical health, the quality of one?s relationships and their financial situation; are a few examples that will play a part in ones mental wellbeing.

This means that there will be times that one feels good and times when they don?t. The natural ebb and flow of life is at work here. (Of course, if one is constantly feeling low and down, then this is a sign that assistance is the right option and must be sought)

Pleasure And Pain

To avoid pain and to seek pleasure is how the ego mind functions. And being human, means is that we will experience pain, it can?t be avoided. However, what we can change is our interpretation of what is causing the pain. It often seems that anything that is considered to be painful is described as a mental health problem in today?s world.

If one doesn?t feel completely happy all of the time, then there is a label or a term given to these people. And if one is happy a lot of the time, there is even a label for this also. Based on this perspective, it would be easy to say everyone has a mental health problem of some kind, simply because we are human.

The Human Experience

And part of what makes us human, is our ability to feel pain. We navigate our way through life by what our ego mind has associated as painful. The childhood years of a lot of people are extremely painful and for some the years later are equally as painful.

The loved ones in people?s life will pass or they will want to move on, which will bring pain. Rejection and disapproval are but two other ways, which can also create pain.

Creativity

So if pain is part of the human experience and we all need a way to deal with that pain, then what better way is there to process it than to be creative? This is a way to transmute the negative energy and that way, instead of using this energy in a destructive way, it can be used to create something positive.

Destructivity

Another way to describe all this is to say ?destructivity ?closely entwined with mental illness?. They are two sides of the same coin. And there are plenty of examples of both. And when it comes to processing the pain that we all have to one degree or another, what is the most constructive?

Conclusion

It can be easy to feel a certain amount stigma around normal parts of the human experience and this can be the result of different influences, from our friends to the experts. The most important thing is to be aware and to question all that is said; so that we can form our own ideas and views.

Pain motivates people to achieve and to develop themselves. The need to have or to achieve is often the result of feeling the absence within. The individual that is content rarely feels motivated to do or be more ? A Buddhist monk is an example of this. So based on this perspective, does that mean that a society?s evolution and the human evolution, is the result of mental health problems?

Why Now Is The Perfect Time To Become A PC Gamer

Consoles seem to dominate the industry as the primary platform for video gaming. Much of game marketing seems to focus on the Xbox, PS3, and Nintendo Wii?think of it, when was the last time you saw an EA title marketed with the tagline ?buy it for PC today?? This is because Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are all willing to pay money to make sure ads tout games for their system in particular, but without a single manufacturer for gaming PCs, the platform lacks a similar advantage. Regardless of this unfortunate PR disadvantage, PC gaming represents the peak of what modern consumer technology can do, can deliver the ultimate virtual experience, and it this holiday season is the perfect time to get started on your desktop if you haven?t already.

It used to be that when a great console game was ported to the PC (after a long wait, no less), that the game?s settings would remain locked like they were on the console version. This makes sense on an Xbox, since every unit sold has more or less the same hardware configuration. That?s not the case for PCs, though. Users with serious computing horsepower found games that looked and played poorly with no way to change the screen resolution, amount of anti-aliasing, texture quality, etc. short of hacking away at the software?s code. Luckily, game developers and publishers have finally seen the light as exemplified in the recent release of Borderlands 2. The game?s video settings on the PC version are detailed and thorough, giving desktop gamers full control of everything they could want. It shows?the PC version of Borderlands on a high-end machine with the settings turned to the max looks great?easily better than the game looks on any console.

With better draw distances, more powerful anti-aliasing, and the ability to render higher-resolution textures, modern gaming computers really take today?s game?s to a whole new level. If you?ve played a AAA release like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on a console, do yourself a favor and check out what it looks like with settings maxed out on a desktop. It?s like night and day. The trend is even going into reverse?Dishonored is limited to a resolution of 1280 x 720 (720p) on the PS3 and Xbox 360, while the PC version can run at full 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and beyond?simply because the aging consoles can?t support the game?s graphics at any higher quality.

Console-exclusive gamers often shy away from PC games because they?re intimidated by BIOS screens, Windows updates, and the idea of liquid cooling?or they don?t like using a keyboard and mouse in lieu of a controller. Nowadays, both Xbox 360 and PS3 Controllers not only operate via USB, they both have drivers built into both Windows 7 and OS X, so no additional software is needed. With the release of Steam?s ?Big Picture? mode in September, the digital distribution platform was optimized for use with a controller not only in-game, but for the Steam store and community functions as well. That means you can sit on your couch, controller in hand, just like you would with your beloved console. And since game settings aren?t locked on PCs, feel free to remap the controller to your liking, or even use a third-party controller with extra buttons thrown in for macros, extra commands, or duplicate controls, just for kicks.

Speaking of controllers?aside from Nintendo?s newest controller-centric Wii U, there?s nothing truly new on the market in the way of console hardware. Sony recently unveiled it?s offering for the upcoming holiday season, the PS3 ?Super Slim?- a new form factor for the same hardware. For this six year old console in a slightly smaller package, consumers will pay more than the list price for the older PS3 Slim. Sure, the console is bundled with stuff that nobody really wants, but the issue isn?t really the price hike, it?s the fact that they?re still charging $270 for a six year old system (that still only has 2 USB ports). Microsoft has the same game plan and they?re in even more trouble than Sony as the Xbox 360 really starts to show it?s age. Released a year before the PS3 and Nintendo Wii, the 360 can?t really stand up to the Playstation?s processing and graphics power, let alone that of a modern gaming PC. In addition to the typical hardware we associate with gaming, consoles also lag behind in less prominent components, like storage media.? While consoles are stuck with decades-old magnetic hard drive tech, solid state disks for PCs have never been more affordable. 128, 256, and even 512GB models are falling in price and enable gamers to load and save data faster than ever. Hate load screens? Either pick up a 12GB solid-state European PS3 slim, hack your current hardware, wait another year (or two!) for the next-gen, or get on the PC gaming train.

The biggest barrier of entry into the world of desktop gaming is price. While gaming PC hardware is certainly more expensive than a new console, anyone with even the slightest DIY spirit can build a computer themselves from parts much more cheaply than buying one already assembled. An investment in a PC will outlast a console, since the modular machine can be upgraded piece-by-piece, extending its lifespan significantly past the average console product cycle. That, and it?s a computer in addition to a gaming rig. You can order pizza, browse Reddit, watch Netflix?all while playing some Civilization 5.

This holiday season, instead of adding the littlest PS3 or whatever iteration of the Nintendo DS is big in Japan these days to your console lineup, consider the modest PC?sure, it can help you do your taxes and look at porn, but it can also game harder, faster, and deliver a higher quality experience than any other platform on the market.

Tigers rout Yankees 8-1 for 4-game ALCS sweep

DETROIT (AP) ? Phil Coke stormed into Jim Leyland's office and sprayed the veteran manager with some of Detroit's celebratory bubbly.

When Leyland tried to take cover in a bathroom, Coke chased him ? a fitting scene involving an unsung reliever whose role changed with little warning and a skipper who never stopped believing in his team.

"I just reminded everybody when we took our punches all year, 'You know what? Let's just wait till the end, and then if we have underachieved, I will be the first one to admit it,'" Leyland said. "So hopefully we've quieted some doubters now. The guys just stepped it up when we had to."

Leyland and the Tigers are heading to the World Series now. Max Scherzer capped a stupendous stretch for Detroit's rotation, and the Tigers won their second pennant in seven years by beating the New York Yankees 8-1 Thursday for a four-game sweep of the AL championship series.

Miguel Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta hit two-run homers in a four-run fourth inning against CC Sabathia, who was unable to prevent the Yankees from getting swept in a postseason series for the first time in 32 years.

Without a World Series title since 1984, Detroit lost to Texas in last year's ALCS, lost slugger Victor Martinez to a season-ending knee injury in January and quickly replaced his offense by signing Prince Fielder. The excitement of that bold acquisition subsided a bit when the Tigers struggled to a 26-32 start in the AL Central, but they overtook the Chicago White Sox in the final 10 days of the regular season and won the division with an 88-74 record, matching the Cardinals for the fewest wins among the 10 playoff teams.

Through it all, Leyland kept an even keel. There was urgency in the Detroit clubhouse, but never panic. The closest the manager came to a major change of course was when closer Jose Valverde gave up four runs in the ninth inning of Game 1 against the Yankees.

Detroit won that game anyway, and Coke got the save in Games 2 and 3 in Valverde's place. Coke also was on the mound at the end of the finale.

"It's been really fun," Coke said. "It's been a blast. I couldn't ask for a better opportunity than have us going to the World Series, have a chance to participate and do the best job I can for the team."

Contrast that to the Yankees, who changed lineups drastically throughout the playoffs in a futile attempt to jump-start an anemic offense.

After scoring in just three of 39 innings during the series, New York headed home to face unpleasant questions about its future following a postseason of awful hitting, benched stars and veterans showing the wear and tear of age. Alex Rodriguez, the $275 million third baseman, was out of the starting lineup Thursday for the third time in the playoffs. Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera could only watch following season-ending injuries.

Rodriguez at least played Thursday, flying out with two on in the sixth as a pinch hitter and grounding out in the ninth.

"Baseball's not an easy game," Rodriguez said. "You wish you could go out and, again, hit .400 and hit the ball all over the park and hit home runs but the one thing that I'm proud of is just kept coming out, working hard, battling, never gave up. And we win as a team, we lose as a team."

The game ended with Fielder, Detroit's $214 million acquisition, catching Jayson Nix's popup. The Tigers spilled onto the field for a celebration that began near second base and eventually moved closer to the third-base line.

General manager Dave Dombrowski hugged Leyland ? who is in the final year of his contract ? while owner Mike Ilitch rubbed the 67-year-old manager's right shoulder.

"I've got a great bunch. We don't have one hot dog in the bunch," Ilitch said. "They're all great guys. ... The Tigers are something special."

Detroit won its 11th American League pennant and first since 2006. The Tigers have five days off before the World Series starts Wednesday at defending champion St. Louis or 2010 winner San Francisco.

The Yankees, with a big league-high $222 million payroll, hit .188 in the postseason ? a record low for a team that played at least seven games ? and .157 in the LCS. New York went quietly in the ninth inning, with the Comerica Park crowd chanting "Sweep!" while the last three batters were retired in order.

In the postseason, Detroit's rotation has been impeccable. Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister allowed only two earned runs against the Yankees. New York was shut out once and totaled six runs in the series.

"We all know what's at stake, we all know every single game's different, we need to go out there and pitch our best," Scherzer said. "When we do that, that's when we give the team a chance to win."

Scherzer allowed a run and two hits in 5 2-3 innings, struck out 10 and walked two.

The Yankees, without a World Series title since 2009, lost Jeter to a broken ankle in the opening game, and the slumping Rodriguez was benched for Game 3. He was out of the starting lineup for Game 4 too, but A-Rod did have one last chance to turn his postseason around when Scherzer was lifted for left-hander Drew Smyly with two outs in the sixth and the Tigers up 6-1.

As Smyly finished warming up, Rodriguez popped out of the dugout to hit for Raul Ibanez, but with runners at the corners, he hit a routine fly to center field. His groundout in the ninth capped a 3-for-25 (.125) playoffs with no RBIs.

New York owes the 37-year-old Rodriguez $114 million over the next five years. His contract includes a provision that requires he approve trades, and he wants to stay.

"I love New York City and I love everything about being a Yankee," he said. "The highs are very high and the lows are extremely low."

The Yankees failed to win a game in a postseason series for only the fifth time. They hadn't been swept since a best-of-five ALCS against Kansas City in 1980. The last team to sweep four straight against them had been Cincinnati in the 1976 World Series.

After a rainout Wednesday, Game 4 started under a sunny sky, and Detroit immediately took the lead on series MVP Delmon Young's RBI single in the first. Young became the first player with four game-winning RBIs in one postseason series, according to STATS, LLC.

About the only thing the Yankees had done well in this postseason was pitch, and Sabathia failed to keep that going. He didn't have much help from his defense. Mark Teixeira, a four-time Gold Glove winner at first base, misplayed two grounders in the third ? one for an infield hit and one for an error.

New York's hitting was abysmal throughout the playoffs. Robinson Cano was at .075 (3 for 40) with no home runs, including a 29 at-bat hitless streak. Curtis Granderson was 3 for 30 with 16 strikeouts, Nick Swisher hit .167 (5 for 30) with two RBIs, Russell Martin hit .161 (5 for 31) with one RBI and Eric Chavez finished 0 for 16 with eight strikeouts.

"It wasn't one guy. It wasn't two guys," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It was a bunch of guys."

NOTES: Cabrera has a hit in a record 17 straight LCS games. He's reached base in all 20 of his postseason games with the Tigers, a team record. ... Sabathia was 4-0 in his previous eight postseason starts. ... Thursday was the 35th anniversary of Reggie Jackson's three-homer game for the Yankees in the World Series against the Dodgers. ... New York scored seven runs at Baltimore in the division series opener, then was held to four or fewer in the next eight games. The Yankees' longest previous stretch like that in postseason play came in 2001, when they were held to four or fewer runs in all seven games of the World Series by Arizona.

Massively's Beau Hindman streaming 24 hours of gaming for Extra ...

It's that time of year again! What time, you say? After all, it's too early for Halloween and Thanksgiving. It's never too early for games, though, and it's time to play them for 24 hours straight and raise money for Extra Life and the Children's Miracle Network Hospital! I've participated in this event for the last several years, sometimes taking along other friends, co-workers and wives. This year is no different and in order to keep me awake and on my toes I will be livestreaming the entire event on our very own MassivelyTV channel. That's right: you can watch as I slowly disintegrate into a pile of goo over the course of the day. Don't fret... a lot of other gamers and developers will be participating, so I won't feel alone. You can join my team if you want to game all day or just donate directly to my page.

Starting at 9:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday, October 20th, I will begin broadcasting a list of approximately 24 games randomly chosen throughout the day. There's no real science to it, and if I happen to be having a ton of fun in one particular game then I might just continue playing it. Feel free to come suggest games in the chat room. I might even have another Massively staffer or two jump on the stream with me, or take over the stream when I need to fix a sandwich.

The real reason I'll be there is to raise money for sick kids. Every cent goes to the charity, and so far Extra Life has raised millions! Wish me luck, and bring coffee!

Hearings for accused 9-11 plotters make little headway

A week of hearings at a military court in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba made slow headway towards a trial of five men accused of orchestrating the 9-11 terror attacks on the United States,?ending Friday with few rulings on two dozen pretrial motions.?

On the final day of hearings none of the five accused men came to court, all opting to stay behind in their prison cells.

Army Col. Judge James Pohl heard several more hours of arguments on the issue of a gag order that prohibits any talk about the interrogations that the men were subjected to at secret CIA prison sites prior to their tranfer to?Guantanamo Bay in 2006. ?

The judge will likely issue a written decision on whether the defendants' memories of the events are in fact classified, as the protective order now states.

Judge Pohl did not rule on the other interesting motion discussed Friday ? one that the Judge nicknamed "The C-SPAN Issue." The defense teams have requested that the trial be open to public television so the world can see the proceedings.

The defense argues that opening the trial to the public is necessary to prevent the appearance of an unfair trial.

The judge challenged that idea, arguing that by that logic every accused person in federal court cannot get a fair trial because it's not televised. He added that trials are not open to cameras in the military system either.

This case is different, defense attorney Marine Major William Hennessy argued.

Pohl countered by asking whether he should conclude that the lack of public television means that an accused person is not getting a fair trial.

"Yes, sir," Hennessy replied.

A prosecution attorney disagreed, saying that the First Amendment right to public access is not absolute, and that opening the trial to television cameras compromises the security of the trial participants.

Earlier in the week, self-professed mastermind of the attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was granted an opportunity for a brief airing of his views of the proceedings.

Wearing a camoflage vest over his traditional robes Mohammed condemned what he called prosecutors "elastic" use of national security to justify its actions.

"The government uses national security as it chooses," the Arabic-speaking Mohammed said through a translator while seated at a defense table. "Many can kill people under the name of national security and torture people in the name of national security."

Mohammed and four?alleged co-conspirators are accused of planning and providing logistical support for the?Sept. 11, 2001 attacks by hijackers who crashed planes into the World Trade Center, the?Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, killing nearly 3,000 people.

If convicted they could face the death penalty, but the trial is many months away.

Pohl set the next motions hearings for Dec. 3-7, putting the attorneys on notice that they should plan to set aside at least one week, every other month.
