Breeze Magazine: Adolescent Romantic Relationships in ...

Although adolescents? romantic relationships would seem like an obvious and important area of study for developmental scientists interested in adolescents? psychological development, until recently the topic has languished, for both pernicious and benign reasons. Currently, however, research on adolescents? dating and
romantic relationships is burgeoning. Dating and romantic relationships are a significant part of adolescents? social world; current research has corrected the misperception that these relationships are fleeting and transitory, as had been presumed.

Instead, the research has shown that romantic relationships are normative during middle adolescence, that they are relatively stable after early adolescence, and that they influence both current functioning and later psychosocial development. By tenth grade, interactions with romantic partners are more frequent than interactions with parents, siblings, or friends and provide as much support as relationships with mothers. Moreover, high school students spend a great deal of time thinking about these relationships. By the end of high school, nearly three-fourth so fall U.S. adolescents report having had a romantic relationship in the last 18 months.

Research on dating and romantic relationships during adolescence has proceeded in several directions. One direction has been to chart normative changes in the features of romantic relationships. In very early research, it is proposed that adolescents progress through a five-stage sequence of structural changes in peer relationships that entails transitions from small unisexual cliques to associations between male and female cliques, to the formation of a larger heterosexual crowd, which provides a context for dating (first among clique leaders and then later more broadly among all members), and finally, crowd dissolution in favor of a loose association of heterosexual couples. Although this account stood unexamined for nearly half a century, recent research has provided evidence for its validity among contemporary youth (although the sequence may unfold over a longer time span, as the average age of marriage moves upward to the mid-twenties). Studies have shown that early adolescents spend a great deal of time thinking about (but not actually interacting with) the opposite sex and that initial interactions with the opposite sex typically occur first in mixed-sex contexts. More experience with mixed-gender friendship groups facilitates adolescents? involvement in romantic relationships.

The social context, including relationships with friends and parents, has been examined as sources of influence on the quality and progression of romantic relationships. Thus far, researchers have focused on either peer influence or parental influence or their additive effects, but more complex models of the interactive influences of parents, friends, and peers on adolescents? romantic relationships have been lacking. Peer relationships may influence the development of romantic relationships by providing a context for establishing romantic relationships, by influencing the nature of those relationships and the choice of romantic partners, and by influencing relationship processes. The quality of adolescents? friendships has been shown to be closely associated with the quality of romantic relationships.

Likewise, researchers have examined continuity between earlier parent-child relationships and adolescents? romantic experience and relationships. According to attachment theory, representations of attachment to care givers formed early in life influence later romantic relationships through expectancies about closeness and intimacy, but some evidence suggests that attachment representations of friendships mediate the relationship between adolescents? working models of their relationships with parents and their views of romantic relationships. Parental socialization practices, such as effective parental monitoring or a history of parental responsiveness and autonomy support, also may influence the development of romantic relationships, eitherdirectlyorthroughtheireffectonsocialcompetence,self-esteem,andself-worth.

Relatively little research to date has examined the meaning of romantic inter-actions and relationships to adolescents, but some evidence indicates that early adolescents? notions of romance are very idealized and stereotypic and primarily meet needs for status attainment, sexual experimentation, and recreation. Overtime, as adolescents gain experience interacting with the opposite sex, romantic relationships begin to fulfill needs for support or care giving.

Another line of research has examined individual differences in dating, with the focus primarily on the consequences of early dating. Research has consistently shown that for both boys and girls early dating is associated with poorer psychosocial adjustment, including poorer self-esteem, lower academic achievement, more alcohol and substance abuse, and earlier involvement in sexual activity. The causal relationships are not clearly established, however, and youth who are involved in these activities may begin their involvement in dating earlier than other teens. Moreover, the desired timetable for dating, pacing of sexual intimacy, and tolerance for diversity may vary by friendship group and reputational crowds, as well as by ethnicity, cultural background, and gender. Furthermore, individual differences in dating among older adolescents need further study.

Despite the rapid progress made in recent years in understanding the development, features, and significance of adolescents? romantic relationships, research in this area has been largely focused on middle-class, European American, heterosexual youth. More research on the normative development of romantic relationships in ethnic minority and sexual minority (e.g., gay, lesbian, or bisexual) youth is needed. Furthermore, to date, research has focused primarily on individual self-reports rather than considering the dyad as a unit of analysis; future research should examine the perceptions and experiences of both romantic partners as well as the influence of discrepancies in their perspectives for adolescent development and adjustment.

ADHD is over-diagnosed, experts say

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? What experts and the public have already long suspected is now supported by representative data collected by researchers at Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum (RUB) and University of Basel: ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is over-diagnosed. The study showed that child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists tend to give a diagnosis based on heuristics, unclear rules of thumb, rather than adhering to recognized diagnostic criteria. Boys in particular are substantially more often misdiagnosed compared to girls.

These are the most important results of a study conducted by Prof. Dr. Silvia Schneider and Prof. Dr. J?rgen Margraf (both from RUB) and Dr. Katrin Bruchm?ller (University of Basel) as reported in the periodical Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Daniel has ADHD, Danielle doesn't

The researchers surveyed altogether 1,000 child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists across Germany. 473 participated in the study. They received one of four available case vignettes, and were asked to give a diagnoses and a recommendation for therapy. In three out of the four case vignettes, the described symptoms and circumstances did not fulfil ADHD criteria. Only one of the cases fulfilled ADHD criteria based strictly on the valid diagnostic criteria. In addition, the gender of the child was included as a variable resulting in eight different case vignettes. As the result, when comparing two identical cases with a different gender, the difference was clear: Leon has ADHD, Lea doesn't.

Male and conspicuous: the "prototype" makes the difference

Many child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists seem to proceed heuristically and base their decisions on prototypical symptoms. The prototype is male and shows symptoms such as motoric restlessness, lack of concentration and impulsiveness. In connection with the gender of the patient, these symptoms lead to different diagnoses. A boy with such symptoms, even he does not fulfil the complete set of diagnostic criteria, will receive a diagnosis for ADHD, whereas a girl will not. Also the therapist's gender plays a role in the diagnostic: male therapists give substantially more frequently a diagnosis for ADHD than their female counterparts.

Diagnostic inflation, more medication, higher daily doses

In the past decades the diagnoses ADHD have become almost inflationary. Between 1989 and 2001, the number of diagnoses in German clinical practise increased by 381 percent. The costs for ADHD medication, such as for the performance-enhancer Methylphenidate, have grown 9 times between 1993 and 2003. The German health insurance company, Techniker, reports an increase of 30 percent in Methylphenidate prescriptions for its clients between the ages of 6 and 18. Similarly, the daily dosage has increased by 10 percent on average.

Remarkable lack of research

Considering these statistics, there is a remarkable lack of research in the diagnostic of ADHD. "In spite of the strong public interest, only very few empirical studies have addressed this issue," Prof. Schneider and Dr. Bruchm?ller point out. While in the 70s and 80s a "certain upswing" of studies on the frequency and reasons for misdiagnoses could be observed, current research hardly examines the phenomena. The current study shows that in order to avoid a misdiagnosis of ADHD and premature treatment, it is crucial for therapists not to rely on their intuition, instead to strictly adhere to defined, established diagnostic criteria. This is best possible with the help of standardized diagnostic instruments, such as diagnostic interviews.

DirecTV's latest HD interface comes to the five tuner HR34 DVR

DirecTV HD user interface
Even if you don't have DirecTV, you've probably heard of the HR34 if you're into DVRs. That's because it's the only DVR from a provider that can record five HD shows at once and it also works in multiple rooms of the house thanks to RVU. All that upside came with a big downside, though, the old and ugly DirecTV DVR user interface. We figured it was only a matter of time before DirecTV's new HD user interface made it's way to the big daddy, and now Solid Signal reports that it's everything you've been waiting for with only slight differences from the HR24. No word on exactly when this update will roll out to HR34 DVRs everywhere, but we suspect it can't be long now.

(AP) ? Another victory in hand but still badly trailing rival Mitt Romney, Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum vowed to continue his campaign despite an increasingly steep climb to the nomination.

Santorum, buoyed by Saturday's win in Louisiana's primary that boosted his spirit but did little to narrow the delegate gap, urged his supporters to stick with him even as much of the GOP establishment has coalesced around Romney's increasingly inevitable coronation. Even in the face of the political headwinds, the former Pennsylvania senator seemed unwilling to acknowledge it would take a dramatic change in momentum to deny Romney his turn as the GOP nominee.

"Even though a lot of folks are saying this race is over, the people in Louisiana said, 'No, it's not.' They still want to see someone who they can trust, someone who's not running an Etch a Sketch campaign, but one who has their principals written on their heart, not on an erasable tablet," Santorum said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation". "And I think that's what helped us deliver the win in Louisiana, and I think we're going to do very well up here in Wisconsin, too."

But it's going to be a tough fight, for sure.

Romney remains far ahead with 568 delegates to Santorum's 273, according to an Associated Press tally. Newt Gingrich follows with 135 and Ron Paul has 50.

Short the 1,144 delegates it will take to clinch the nomination ahead of the convention this summer in Tampa, Fla., Romney enjoys an organizational and fundraising advantage over his closest rival. For instance, Santorum isn't even on the ballot for the primary in the District of Columbia, for its April 3 primary ? the latest illustration of how the under-funded underdog struggles to keep pace with Romney's years-in-the-making campaign.

Earlier Saturday, Santorum said he wanted to debate Romney without trailing competitors former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas on stage.

"This race has clearly gotten down to two candidates that can win the nomination," Santorum told reporters in Milwaukee. "I'd love to have a one-on-one debate."

Romney's team, increasingly confident, dismissed the idea and the win.

"Rick Santorum is like a football team celebrating a field goal when they are losing by seven touchdowns with less than a minute left in the game," said Romney spokesman Ryan Williams, who crashed Santorum's victory party here.

On Sunday, Santorum shot back, saying the comments came from "a desperate campaign that has no message."

Santorum said voters are "looking for someone who's going to win the election because they have better ideas, not because they've been able to pound their opponent into the ground with overwhelming negative ads. That's why we won Louisiana last night and that's why we're going to do well in Wisconsin."

Neither Santorum nor Romney, who took a day off from campaigning, was in the state as Louisiana Republicans weighed in. Both men were looking ahead at the upcoming contests, although the topsy-turvy race has proved unpredictable.

"This race is long and far from over, and to the people of Wisconsin, I just say to you: On, Wisconsin! Let's get it done!" Santorum told a sparsely attended victory celebration, his 11th win.

Santorum badly needed a rebound after a decisive Illinois loss to Romney earlier in the week that moved party stalwarts to rally around the front-runner. Many urged Santorum and Gingrich to drop out of the race.

Both refused, and campaigned aggressively in Louisiana in hopes that a victory there would justify them staying in despite Republican worries that the long nomination fight could hurt the party's chances against President Barack Obama. The Democratic incumbent faces no serious primary challenge and his re-election campaign already is well under way.

Santorum's improbable campaign was continuing Sunday, with a busy day of campaigning in Wisconsin. Aides are looking ahead at the state as a bright spot, as well as Pennsylvania, the delegate-rich state Santorum represented in Congress.

But Romney's campaign is airing TV ads in the state, and his super PAC allies have plowed more than $2 million into TV advertising here. A crush of advertising ? mostly negative ? eroded Santorum's strength in states such as Michigan, Ohio and Illinois as he simply couldn't keep pace.

Ky. horse racing fades, boosters yearn for casinos ? Artesia News

FLORENCE, Ky. (AP) ? Away from the picturesque farms dotting bluegrass country, the mega-dollar yearling sales at Keeneland and the twin spires at Churchill Downs, the tradition-laden sport of horse racing is in danger of falling off the pace in its old Kentucky home.

Venerable tracks now offer $1 beer-and-hot dog promotions, live music and night racing to boost attendance.

While tracks in other states have parlayed casino gambling into higher purses, Kentucky lawmakers have resisted allowing such a move. Everyone from breeders to railbirds worries that it will eventually render the home of American horse racing an also-ran.

Even storied Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, has felt the pressure.

The Louisville track offers a few nights of live racing, drawing three times the typical race day crowds. It has reduced racing days in its spring meet in a gambit to keep purses competitive with tracks where casino operations boost racing prizes. Between 2000 and 2008, the famed track had at least 52 racing days in the spring session; this year it will have 39. But Churchill still struggles to fill some race cards with big fields that attract more betting, track president Kevin Flanery said recently.

?We?re having difficulty giving away the money that we?re offering because they?re going to other states that are either offering more or have less competition than a Kentucky racetrack would have,? he said.

But Churchill has the Derby, a cash cow, to support its racing seasons.

Times are especially tough at Turfway Park in Florence, and the odds look even longer now that slot machines won?t offer a lifeline.

From the backside to the executive offices, there?s grim talk that without an infusion of casino gambling money, the winter haven for Kentucky horse racing could someday turn into a shopping mall.

?I hope I don?t have to consider that. I?m not that interested in being a shopping mall manager,? Turfway President and CEO Robert Elliston said.

But if the track can?t make it as a racing facility or gaming facility, he said, ?then we have to look at other options.?

As the suburban northern Kentucky track has reduced live racing and offered some paltry prize money, tracks in other states have been outstripping their Kentucky competitors. States like Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana have parlayed casino gambling into higher purses.

It?s a domino effect: Bigger purses attract more horses and more wagering as everyone from owners, trainers and jockeys to race fans look to cash in.

In Pennsylvania, where horse racing mingles with casinos at operations dubbed ?racinos,? overall purses approached $123.5 million in 2011 for 4,464 live races. Kentucky?s overall purses were $89.7 million for fewer races.

Now the ante is being raised in New York. Purses are up sharply at Aqueduct Racetrack, thanks to a new gambling parlor there. In January, purses at Aqueduct were about $400,000 per day, compared to $275,000 per day in January 2011. Other New York tracks also are seeing higher purses.

Kentucky lawmakers have refused to follow that lead, defeating proposals to let the state?s racetracks introduce slot machines.

Supporters of expanded gambling suffered another setback last month when the state Senate defeated a proposed constitutional amendment to legalize casinos in Kentucky.

Kentucky has long been the hub of thoroughbred breeding. For decades, many horses have stayed put to compete in Kentucky, which offers year-round racing during rotating meets at Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Turfway and Ellis Park.

Kentucky?s horse industry generates about $4 billion each year. It?s responsible for tens of thousands of jobs ? everything from training horses to caring for their health, cleaning up after them, shipping them and producing the hay they munch. There are equine accountants and attorneys, bloodstock consultants and racetrack officials.

But the number of live racing days has shrunk as tracks struggle to offer the purses needed to attract horses. In 1993, Kentucky tracks offered 2,976 races. Last year, the total shrank to 2,107, a 29 percent drop.

Average purses in Kentucky dipped below $30,000 in 2008 and 2009 but rebounded past $40,000 the following two years, inflated by declining race days and Churchill Downs hosting the Breeders? Cup.

At its highest levels, it?s a sport of blue bloods, with rich owners and celebrity trainers. But most horse owners struggle to keep their stables running on modest incomes.

And away from the glitz and tradition, the Kentucky racing scene has faded ? perhaps nowhere more than Turfway, which now offers $1 beer and hot dog promotions and live music on Friday nights to boost attendance.

It?s not just the horsemen struggling at Turfway.

Tom Scherz, who operates the kitchen on the track?s backside, said his business is off at least 50 percent.

?We?re at rock bottom,? Scherz said. ?If something doesn?t happen, we?ll probably be done in 24 months.?

?It?s from top to bottom,? he added. ?There are owners that are sinking to the guy that cleans the poop sinking.?

On a recent Saturday at Turfway, two floors of the six-story clubhouse were empty. A modest crowd pressed near the rail or clustered around clubhouse TV sets to watch horses run. On the backside, paint was peeling or fading on horse barns. Roads were pocked with potholes.

Arnold E. Lillard made a rare visit to Turfway on the recent Saturday. He used to go to Kentucky tracks regularly, but the retired truck driver now does his wagering at Belterra Casino Resort nearby in Indiana. He wore a Belterra pullover, sporting his loyalty on his back.

He had cashed two winning bets on simulcast races in Florida, but grumbled ?they didn?t pay much.? He said Kentucky racing has suffered from uncompetitive purses.

His son, Jerry Lillard, still enjoys playing the horses, but said the horses competing at Turfway are generally ?bottom feeders.?

Ellis Park in western Kentucky, which offers live racing in summer, has also struggled. But that track is installing slot-like machines for instant racing games based on past horse races. Ellis is remodeling its clubhouse and expects the new revenue to spike its purses. Turfway wants to add instant racing but is awaiting the outcome of a legal challenge against the game before jumping in.

Turfway president Elliston estimates that casino gambling would pump $100 million into Turfway, allowing it to double purses.

But for now, that?s just a dream. Meanwhile, just across the Ohio River, casino gambling is coming to Cincinnati, creating a new competitor for entertainment dollars. The nearby Indiana casino already drains gambling dollars away from Turfway.

Kentucky-based horsemen looking for the biggest paydays have noticed the casino-enriched purses offered at Penn National, Parx Racing and Presque Isle tracks in Pennsylvania.

In 2005, Penn National offered about $60,000 in daily race purses; now it?s about $175,000 daily, said spokesman Fred Lipkin.

?Obviously that increase is strictly due to the influx of gaming money,? he said.

Last year, thoroughbred owner Jim Wright shipped one filly to Pennsylvania to run at Presque Isle. The horse had four second-place finishes in six starts, yet Wright said she outpaced the net profit earned by his six horses that ran at Kentucky tracks. He plans to ship four or five horses to Pennsylvania to run this summer.

Jeff Greenhill gave up his career as a chemical engineer and moved to Kentucky to learn the horse business. In 1999, horses he trained won about $500,000 in prize money, nearly all in Kentucky races.

Now he?s joining the outmigration from Kentucky. Last year, about three-fourths of the nearly $500,000 his horses earned came from races in places like Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

?I feel like I owe it to my clients to run where the purses have the best chance to pay for their horses,? Greenhill said. ?You can?t do that in Kentucky.?

Not everyone sees slots as a savior for Kentucky racing. Longtime breeder Arthur Hancock, owner of Stone Farm near Paris, Ky., said racing would be relegated to secondary status if casinos ever got a foothold at the racetracks,

?I don?t know of any business that lives off the charity of another business, especially a competitive one,? he said. ?It would be a short-term gain and a long-term disaster for racing.?

Trainer Dale Romans, a fixture on the Kentucky racing circuit, has shifted much of his stable to New York in pursuit of larger purses. Romans, who won the 2011 Preakness with Shackleford, plans to increase his presence in New York. This spring he will race horses there that would have raced at Keeneland and Churchill Downs in the past.

?I?m Kentucky through and through ? born and raised,? Romans said. ?It?s devastating not to be able to race there on a full-time basis. But it?s hard to convince clients ? and most of my clients are from outside Kentucky ? that we should be running there instead of New York.?

The New Baby Taco Box | The Kitchn

2012_3_22-Taco-Box-1-Ed.jpgWhen I had my baby, after fifty hours of unbelievable labor, I came home to a kitchen that was not quite through a remodel and a pretty empty fridge.

Blissed out and hungry, we assumed there would be a parade of lasagna and casseroles ? isn't that how it goes in the movies? ? but alas, the goods never arrived. After that, I swore that from then on I would always cook for my friends when they had babies and that is how my famous Taco Box evolved.

Last week when a very good friend had her second baby ? a boy with the best shaggy hair and a perfect little mouth ? I thought again about what a new family needs. They don't need advice about feeding on demand and diapering, but they need to be fed and good food goes a long way. No longer a new parent, I am still reminded of all the things that good food makes you feel in a time of need: loved, secure, warm, and considered.

How To Make a Taco Box

The wine-crate delivery vessel idea came about when a friend in the wine business had her son and I thought she'd appreciate the presentation. Now, when it's time for a Taco Box I ask a neighborhood wine shop or restaurant for a crate. For this last baby I decided to get fancy and bust out the spray paint and masking tape. In less than five minutes I had taped off the words Taco Box, sprayed the side, and set it to dry on my fire escape. I was on the train to Brooklyn in no time.

2012_3_22-Taco-Box-2-Ed.jpg

What To Put In a Taco Box

You can make your own Taco Box with anything you think a family needs. Fill it with baguettes, good mustard, ham, berries, and cream. Go the breakfast route and include bagels (with freezer bag!) smoked salmon, good coffee, and fresh fruit. Ask Mom what she's craving and spoil her with treats.

Why do I do tacos? What's with the six-pack of Guinness? Tacos, because it's what I crave, and I know when I make my tacos, pregnant, post-partum, or not, my friends usually like it. I know other relatives probably have the lasagnas and casseroles covered, even if mine didn't. Guinness, because where some of my ancestors come from, it's said that a dark lager helps milk production.* Tacos and stout are also my way of honoring my own Irish and Mexican heritage so it seems a fitting way to feed a new family.

It's not always chicken, sometimes it's pork butt or carne asada (steak) but it always includes guacamole, corn tortillas, and that six pack. Even if mom isn't craving a beer, dad might be.

I'd love to hear about what you make in your welcome package for new families. And if you've never done it, this is your chance to deliver your first Taco Box.

More Tips for Feeding a Family With a New Baby

Here are some tips on packing up food for a family with a new baby:

? Before planning the menu, ask about any restrictions and know they may have changed since the birth. Some moms need more of some things and less of others, especially if they are nursing.
? Prepare foods that can be frozen in case someone else brought food on the same day or some kind soul just did a big grocery run.
? If cooking a large quantity, pack the freezable foods into individual freezer bags. If there are two parents and an older sibling, pack the bags to have three servings' worth, etc.
? Write re-heating instructions on the bags or on a note in the box in case someone who isn't used to cooking is playing chef.

Great Recipes for Feeding a New Family

Here are some other recipes of mine that would be great for a new family:

? Slow Cooker Carnitas
? 30-Minute Coq au Vin
? Coconut Milk Chicken
? Smashed Potatoes with Cr?me Fra?che
? Cheddar and Leek Muffins
? Italian Wedding Soup

*This is not meant to spark a debate on drinking while nursing, though I will offer that my midwife and my pediatrician both encouraged a short beer at the end of the day.

Further evidence confirming the negative effects of air pollution on child behavior

NEW YORK ( March 22, 2012) - Mothers' exposure during pregnancy to a class of air pollutants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) can lead to behavioral problems in their children. PAH are released to air during incomplete combustion of fossil fuel such as diesel, gasoline, coal, and other organic material.

The study is the first report of associations between child attentional and behavioral problems among school?age children and two complementary measures of prenatal PAH exposure: monitored air concentrations of PAH and a PAH-specific biomarker of exposure measured in maternal and umbilical cord blood. The paper, "Prenatal Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Exposure and Child Behavior at age 6-7," published online today in Environmental Health Perspectives, adds to rising concerns about the risks associated with exposures to air pollution during pregnancy.

The study followed the children of 253 non?smoking inner-city women who gave birth between 1999 and 2006. Researchers led by Frederica Perera, DrPH, director of the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health at the Mailman School of Public Health, measured two complementary indicators of PAH exposure. One indicator was the PAH concentration in air from personal air sampling which took place during the third trimester of pregnancy. The other was a specific biological marker of exposure-- PAHDNA adducts measured in maternal blood and newborn umbilical cord blood. When inhaled by the mother during pregnancy, PAH can be transferred across the placenta and bind to the DNA of the fetus, forming "adducts" in blood and other tissues and providing a biologic measure of pollutant exposure.

Mothers completed a detailed assessment of their child's behavior (including whether the children experienced symptoms of anxiety, depression, or attention problems. High prenatal PAH exposure, whether characterized by personal air monitoring or maternal and newborn cord adducts, was significantly associated with symptoms of Anxious/Depressed and Attention Problems.

In urban air, traffic emissions are a dominant source of the pollutants measured in the study. Illustrating widespread exposure to these pollutants, 100% of the mothers in the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health NYC cohort had detectable levels of PAH in prenatal personal air samples, although levels varied widely. The authors accounted for other sources of PAH such as environmental tobacco smoke and diet in their analyses. None of the mothers in the study were smokers.

"This study provides evidence that environmental levels of PAH encountered in NYC air can adversely affect child behavior. The results are of concern because attention problems and anxiety and depression have been shown to affect peer relationships and academic performance," said Dr. Perera, the study's lead author.

###

The study was conducted in collaboration with members of the Columbia research team including, Dr. Deliang Tang, Dr. Shuang Wang, Julia Vishnevetsky, Bingzhi Zhang, Diurka Diaz, David Camann, and Dr. Virginia Rauh.

The work was supported by funding provided by NIEHS, the EPA and private foundations.

Apple's stock closes above $600 for first time

Apple's stock closed above $600 for the first time Monday, the same day the company announced plans to reward shareholders with a dividend and a share buyback program.

The stock rallied in the final minutes of trading to close at $601.10, an increase of $15.53, or 2.7 percent. On Thursday, the stock reached $600.01 briefly before falling to a closing price of $585.56.

Apple is the world's most valuable company, with a market capitalization of about $560 billion. It topped $500 billion for the first time in late February, a market-value peak where few companies have ventured.

The company has been successful with what it calls "post-PC" products ? smartphones and tablet computers that perform tasks people used to do on personal computers. In the U.S. and other industrialized markets, there's evidence consumers have delayed replacing PCs, hurting manufacturers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Apple has a healthy cash balance because of its success with those products. It had $97.6 billion in cash and securities at the end of 2011. Apple said Monday that it will pay a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share, starting in its fiscal fourth quarter, which begins July 1. The company also said it plans to buy back up to $10 billion in stock over three years starting Sept. 30.

The third version of the iPad went on sale Friday in the U.S. and nine other countries. Some customers camped outside stores overnight to be among the first to buy one. Upgrades in the new version include a sharper screen and a faster processor. Apple said late Monday that it had sold 3 million of the new iPads, which it said was the strongest iPad launch to date.

The iPad goes on sale in 25 additional markets, mostly in Europe, this Friday.

There were 15.4 million iPads shipped in Apple's most recent quarter, which included the critical holiday season. That amount was more than double the 7.3 million sold a year earlier. Researchers estimate that the iPad has more than 60 percent of the market for tablets.

IPhone sales have also been strong. Apple sold more than 37 million in the last three months of 2011, which was also more than double the 16.2 million sold in the same period a year earlier.

Update for world temperature data

Researchers have updated HadCRUT - one of the main global temperate records, which dates back to 1850.

One of the main changes is the inclusion of more data from the Arctic region, which has experienced one of the greatest levels of warming.

The amendments do not change the long-term trend, but the data now lists 2010, rather than 1998, as the warmest year on record.

The update is reported in the published in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

HadCRUT is compiled by the UK Met Office's Hadley Centre and the Climatic Research Unit (Cru) at the University of East Anglia, and is one of three global records used extensively by climatologists.

The other two are produced by US-based researchers at Nasa and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa).

Cru's director, Phil Jones, explained why it was necessary to revise the UK record.

"HadCRUT is underpinned by observations and we've previously been clear it may not be fully capturing changes in the Arctic because we have had so little data from the area," he said.

"For the latest version, we have included observations from more than 400 (observation) stations across the Arctic, Russia and Canada."

Prof Jones added: "This has led to better representation of what's going on in the large geographical region."

Despite the revisions, the overall warming signal has not changed. The scientists say it has remained at about 0.75C (1.4F) since 1900.

Kicking the bucket

Another change adopted in the HadCRUT dataset is the way sea surface temperature (SST) is recorded, allowing scientists to revisit and recalibrate past calculations.

With advances in technology in recent years, ships now have electronic sensors that can accurately record SST.

This development has highlighted a systematic anomaly in traditional methods of collating the data in the past.

This included differences in the buckets used to collect sea water for measurement, and the locations where those measurements were recorded.

Improvements in the way SST is collected has now allowed scientists to recalculate data, making amendments to the data collected in previous years.

"An example of this is the rapid change in the kinds of measurements we see in the digital archives around the Second World War," explained Peter Stott, head of climate monitoring and attribution at the Met Office.

"Research has shown readings from buckets were generally cooler so when the database changes from one source to another, you see artifical jumps in the temperature.

"We have quantified these effects and corrected them, providing a clearer view of the evolution of global temperatures."

Could it be that Jennifer Aniston and her actor beau, Justin Theroux, are tying the knot?

The actress is sparking engagement rumors after being spotted in New York City on Thursday wearing a sparkling piece of bling on the finger that traditionally adorns an engagement ring. Aniston has yet to comment on the dazzling piece of jewelry.

Aniston, who was famously married to and divorced from Brad Pitt in the mid-2000s, began dating her "Wanderlust" co-star in 2011. The rumors of their romance began to hit the Web that May. They met while filming the comedy, but in an interview with "Good Morning America" in February, she insisted that they didn't begin dating on set, while he was still with his then-girlfriend, Heidi Bivens.

"Nothing happened on that movie. ... It's a rumor. It's the easy rumor, but nothing happened. We were just friends," she said. "I've known Justin for a long time. He is really cute [and] he's a great actor."

While the couple has a dog named Sophie, in an interview with GQ, Aniston says she hasn't ruled out children. "I think people maybe want me to have a kid now. I still kind of go with it," Aniston said. "If it happens, it happens. I'm calm and peaceful with whatever the plan is. It's not something where I'm going, 'I gotta have a kid!' "

During our "MTV First" earlier this year, she talked about starring alongside her rumored fiancé.

"I didn't recognize him actually, when were at the camera test," she said. "We were at the camera test and I did not recognize him because he's usually in leather and tight black jeans and black boots and he has this very specific look that, since I've known him, he's always had. But that's sort of what's so great [about him].

"What I think is so awesome about Justin is that he really just disappears," she added. "He sort of morphs into things, into characters and also has a leading-man quality, which I think is beautiful. He's just great."
