LAST-MINUTE PREP

Less than a day before events are set to begin at the ExCel Centre in east London, workers scrambled to put the finishing touches on the venue.

In the weightlifting arena, where competition starts on Saturday in women's 48 kilograms, a forklift was being used to mount lighting for the main stage as workers secured the temporary bleachers behind them. Outside the five arenas that will host seven sports, concessions stands weren't quite finished either but appeared set to be ready for business.

The ExCel Centre opened in 2001 and is the largest venue of the London games. The building, which serves as one of Europe's biggest exhibition centers, will also host boxing, judo, table tennis, wrestling, taekwondo and fencing.
