Devore Animal Shelter chief holds out hope for rescued dogs

DEVORE -- They happily pressed their noses between the bars of their kennels as Doug Smith approached. Some wagged their tails. Others cheerfully barked.

While some still showed signs of the alleged abuse they endured at an Apple Valley rescue, most seemed to be losing their suspicion of humans, Smith, supervisor of the San Bernardino County Animal Shelter in Devore , said Saturday.

Two weeks after more than 130 dogs were rescued from the Rainbow's End Animal Sanctuary, most were still waiting to be rescued from the Devore shelter.

"We're doing everything we can to make sure they get the best chance at survival," Smith said.

After the call went out Wednesday to rescue groups for help, Smith said he received calls from a handful of groups, including one from Colorado and another from Sacramento.

"The group from Colorado are coming (Sunday) so see how many they can take," Smith said.

He expected the Sacramento rescue organization to be in Devore on Tuesday.

As of Saturday, three of the 130 dogs had been rescued, but Smith and his staff are optimistic the close-knit online community of animal lovers will come through for the dogs.

The story of the dogs being kept in hoarder conditions went national over the Fourth of July with news organizations from as far away as New York reporting on their plight.

"We're hoping this will help rescue the dogs," Smith said adding the dogs and puppies are not violent but do require the extra care an experienced rescue group can give them.

Some of the dogs will need extended medical care as well as help with behavior issues. For those reasons, the dogs are not available for adoption to the general public.

Smith hopes the dogs are rescued soon because the shelter had to make room for more than 60 lost dogs and cats that were picked up since the Fourth of July.

He isn't certain how many of those animals are pets who ran away from their homes due to loud fireworks.

Any rescue group looking to rescue the Apple Valley dogs can call 909-386-9820.

The Devore Animal Shelter is located at 19777 Shelter Way.
