T-Mobile launching GoSmart prepaid MVNO nationwide next month

GoSmart

T-Mobile looks ready to start offering its new "GoSmart" prepaid MVNO service nationwide at some point in February. We heard back in early December that T-Mobile was planning to launch a new MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) under the brand name "GoSmart" as it started market-specific trials of the service near the end of the year. FierceWireless is now confirming that the service will be going live on a nationwide scale in February. The prepaid service, although completely owned and operated by T-Mobile, will carry no T-Mobile branding and offer three plans:

  • $30 per month for unlimited talk and text
  • $35 per month for unlimited talk, text and 2G data
  • $45 per month for unlimited talk, text and 5GB of "high speed" data

It still isn't clear what T-Mobile means by "high speed" data, but we have to assume at this point that it means HSPA+. Similarly to current T-Mobile plans, users hitting that 5GB threshold will be throttled to 2G speeds rather than charged overages. T-Mobile is indeed planning to prioritize it's own postpaid and prepaid customers over GoSmart customers, however, meaning that in times of congestion the GoSmart customers will be a lower priority. This can often be the case with prepaid providers, and at the prices you see above it's not surprising.

The service is said to launch with a "mobile SIM kit" for $8 that lets users bring their own unlocked GSM devices. This may be a compelling option for many of us looking to cut down the monthly cost of our phone bills, but we'll have to wait and see what the fine print says when these plans come out officially.

Is McDonald's Actually Getting Healthier Or Does ... - Business Insider

McDonald's has announced the creation of 2,500 new British jobs. Over the last five years, in fact, the company increased its UK workforce by 20,000 ? a rise of over 20%. Many of these McJobbers will be workers on benefits or "Wobs", of course, and they'll still be miserably underpaid on seven or eight quid an hour while, last year, the company's chief executive James Skinner took home almost $9m.

But whatever its reputation among those of us who care about working conditions, public health, the environment and the quality of the food we eat, McDonald's is still doing extraordinarily well. Every day, 68 million people visit one of its restaurants. If you'd bought its stock in 2004, when Morgan Spurlock released Supersize Me and some people predicted the eventual death of the giant, you'd have tripled your money by now.

The McDonald's PR campaign of the mid-noughties has undeniably been a success. But did the chain actually improve, or were its changes merely cosmetic? In the UK, at least, I would argue McDonald's felt genuinely compelled to act on some of the concerns people had raised about it. It introduced more salads and fresh fruit to its menus, it began to use only free-range eggs and organic milk, it made its revolting coffee Rainforest Alliance and it began to recycle much more than it had before. People argued, with some reason, that the lettuce leaves were just fig leaves: that healthy-ish food in a burger joint was only a "vehicle to sell more burgers and fries", as one anti-junk food campaigner put it to the New York Times.

In part, she was probably right. But Jamie Oliver was right as well: it's now possible to eat a relatively healthy meal in McDonald's. (This is if you define "healthy" as merely "not high in fat and sugar": a narrow definition, but the most important in the debate on obesity.) This is an undeniable improvement on the situation 10 years ago. Many people thought that putting calorie counts on menus would look stupid or nannying, but those numbers turned out to make it much easier for people to make better choices about the food they buy. Middle class as I am, I use them in Pret sometimes. Anyone could guess that a ham and cheese toastie is going to be more calorific than a tuna salad, but few would necessarily have realised the toastie has well over three times as many calories as the tuna.

While it's clear that McDonald's continues to make it easy to eat very badly for very little money, I'm not convinced it's reasonable to blame it alone for the obesity crisis. Blind though it perhaps is of me, I still marvel that it can raise, kill and butcher a cow, make a bun and cheese with all those weird chemicals, lurid colours and sugar, van everything round the country or the planet, pay the rents on the restaurants, hand its staff their abysmal wages or million-dollar bonuses, market itself ferociously, and still sell a cheeseburger for 99p.

I'm no convert to McDonald's. Its pay remains a disgrace; its core product deeply unhealthy (a "Big Tasty with Bacon", large fries and medium chocolate milkshake has 1,780 calories) and it retains a pathological hostility to trade unions. I was as revolted as anyone at its presence in those monolithically ugly premises in the Olympic park. But under pressure from campaigners it has been forced to improve a little in the last few years. The correct response is not applause, it should be to intensify that pressure.

Kim Kardashian says her baby won't be on TV

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Even though Kim Kardashian's baby might be wearing specially made leather pants designed by dad Kanye West, she says the child is not going to join the family business right away.

"The baby is not going to be on our show," Kim said Tuesday night during her and sister Kourtney Kardashian's appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "When he or she decides that's what they want to do, then that will be a decision.

"I love seeing Mason and Penelope on TV," she added, referring to Kourtney's little ones. "Mason is the highlight of our show, I think."

Kris Jenner reveals talk show plans--and Kim's pregnancy cravings

"It's a tough decision," Kim admitted after Jimmy joked about whether the baby might "feel bad" being the only family member not on TV. "From the start, as of now, that's just a personal choice that Kanye and I have made... We're going to try to keep it as private as possible."

But if the baby wants to release his or her own fragrance?

"If that's what they want to do, I will support it," Kim said, smiling.

Kim talks infertility struggles, Kanye and Kris Humphries

As for Kourtney, she admits it's a "struggle," trying to decide if letting her kids be on TV is the right choice, "but a lot of the times I feel like, them being with their mom is the best thing."

Kim, who previously opened up about the private struggle she was having with infertility, called getting pregnant a "nice surprise" and revealed that she's got about a week or two to go until she finds out the sex.

Asked whether Kourtney's hand-me-downs will pass muster with the kid's father, Kim admitted that she thinks Kanye is going to want things "specially made," including some "really fun stuff."

Kim touches down at LAX in fur and leather

"Leather pants!" cracked Kourtney.

"Imagine, crapping in something that expensive," mused Jimmy.

And while Kourtney guessed that she will eventually be throwing her sister a baby shower along with Khloe Kardashian Odom and their mom, Kris Jenner, Jimmy took the opportunity to throw Kim a "mini" shower, complete with virgin mimosas and a "big book of baby names that start with K."

If Kim and Kanye go with Katmandu, we'll know where the inspiration came from.

Are you surprised the reality star plans to keep her baby off TV? Tell us on our Facebook page.

Chevron says it has paid $10 million after fire

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Chevron Corp. has paid about $10 million and has begun what's being termed "corrective actions" after a fire last summer at its Richmond refinery, company officials said.

In a report filed with the Contra Costa County Health Services Department on Monday, the San Ramon, Calif.-based oil giant said it has paid the money in connection to nearly 24,000 claims from residents and in compensation to area hospitals and local government agencies in Richmond and in Contra Costa County.

Most of the $10 million went to hospitals for medical exams and treatment immediately following the incident, Chevron spokesman Sean Comey said in an email to The Associated Press.

The payments follow a fire in a crude oil unit of the refinery on Aug. 6 that sent a cloud of gas and black smoke over residential areas, prompting thousands of people to seek medical treatment, with many complaining of eye irritation and breathing problems.

Federal investigators have said that Chevron firefighters responding to a small leak at the facility may have accidentally punctured a main pipeline that sparked the massive blaze.

A metallurgical report showed the 40-year-old pipe that failed, causing the leak, was initially weakened by the heavy sulfur content of the crude oil being pumped through it. After a small leak sent hydrocarbons into the air, a small flash fire was put out. But a larger gash in the pipe released a bigger cloud of flammable gas, leading to a larger fire.

Chevron is also strengthening its reliability programs for piping and equipment, updating protocols on how crews respond to new leaks and is increasing employee training, the company said in its report.

The crude oil unit where the fire erupted remains closed as crews work on repairs, but Chevron officials expect to restart the unit by the end of March, Comey said.

Chevron also plans to release the results of the company's internal investigation before restarting the unit, Comey said.

HP web store leaks 14-inch Chromebook Pavilion, to be unveiled on February 17

HP crafting 14inch Chromebook Pavilion, to be unveiled on February 17

Hewlett-Packard didn't have the best 2012, but that's not stopping the US company from getting on the Chromebook bandwagon. The HP Chromebook Pavilion was spotted by Slashgear on HP's own web store, despite the additional information section noting a February 17 "ad embargo" on the information. The little 14-inch Chromebook runs Google's eponymous OS with an Intel Celeron 847 CPU clocked at 1.1GHz, an Intel HD GPU, 2GB of DDR3 SDRAM (expandable up to 4GB), and 16GB of SSD storage space, put to use on the 14-inch HD BrightView LED-backlit display (1366 x 768 resolution). A trio of old-school USB 2.0 slots an HDMI out, and an ethernet jack make up the lion's share of ports, while an SD card slot adds expandable storage options. The 2.55Ah lithium-ion battery included will last up to (approximately) four hours and 15 minutes, though we'd like to put that to the test ourselves before trusting the specs sheet. Of course, it looks like it won't be too long before we hear more and get our hands on the device, given that Feb. 17th date.

Consider Multiple Banking Accounts to Budget for Various Needs and Wants

Consider Multiple Banking Accounts to Budget for Various Needs and WantsMost people seem to have a single checking and a single savings account. My wife and I take it a bit further by putting our emergency fund in a separate online-only checking account, but family financial weblog The Fun, Cheap, or Free Queen suggests having no less than seven bank accounts for a family.

Their seven accounts include an emergency savings and regular savings account, separate checking accounts for the household, husband, and wife, health savings account, and a slush fund. Most budget-savvy families have buckets for each of these expenditure categories, but if you're horrible at sticking to a budget perhaps having the money diverted in this many accounts may be a helpful tool.

To see how each account is used within the family budget and how much is allocated to each account, check out the source link below. Keep in mind that there can be incentives for opening an account a new bank?we earned a $200 bonus deposit for using the debit card for our new account 5 times within the first month and keeping track of multiple accounts can be easily accomplished using Mint. Anonymous hijacks federal website to avenge activist's death

1 day

WASHINGTON???The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide. The FBI is investigating.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch (http://www.ussc.gov), was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online, and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

The FBI's Richard McFeely, executive assistant director of the agency's?Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, said in a statement that "we were aware as soon as it happened and are handling it as a criminal investigation. We are always concerned when someone illegally accesses another person's or government agency's network."

Hours after the hijacking, pages on the USSC.gov website were available only sporadically.

APNewsBreak: Harkin won't seek 6th Senate term

CUMMING, Iowa (AP) ? U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin said Saturday he will not seek a sixth term in 2014, a decision that eases some of the burden the national Republican Party faces in retaking the Senate.

Harkin, chairman of an influential Senate committee, announced his decision during an interview with The Associated Press, saying the move could surprise some.

The 73-year-old cited his age ? he would be 81 at the end of a sixth term ? as a factor in the decision, saying it was time to pass the torch he has held for nearly 30 years, freeing a new generation of Iowa Democrats to seek higher office.

"I just think it's time for me to step aside," Harkin told the AP.

Harkin, first elected in 1984, ranks seventh in seniority and fourth among majority Democrats. He is chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and chairman of the largest appropriations subcommittee.

Harkin has long aligned with the Senate's more liberal members, and his signature legislative accomplishment is the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. He also served as a key salesman of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul to the wary left.

"I'm not saying that giving this up and walking away is easy. It's very tough," Harkin said at his rural Iowa home south of Des Moines. "But I'm not quitting today. I'm not passing the torch sitting down."

Harkin's news defied outward signals. Besides being beloved in his party, Harkin has $2.7 million in his campaign war chest, second most among members nearing the end of their terms, and was planning a fundraiser in Washington, D.C., next month featuring pop star Lady Gaga.

Obama released a statement saying Harkin will be missed and thanking the senator for his service. "During his tenure, he has fought passionately to improve quality of life for Americans with disabilities and their families, to reform our education system and ensure that every American has access to affordable health care," Obama said.

Although members of his family have been diagnosed with cancer, Harkin said his health is good ? and reported a recent positive colonoscopy. But he said "you never know," and that he wanted to travel and spend his retirement with his wife, Ruth, "before it's too late."

He also nodded to his political longevity: "The effect of that cascades down and it opens a lot of doors of opportunity" for future candidates.

But by opening a door in Iowa, Harkin has created a potential headache for his party nationally.

Democrats likely would have had the edge in 2014 with the seat, considering Harkin's fundraising prowess and healthy approval. A poll by the Des Moines Register last fall showed a majority of Iowans approved of his job performance.

Democrats hold a 55-45 advantage in the Senate, requiring Republicans to gain six seats to win back the chamber. But Democrats have more seats to defend in 2014 ? 20 compared with only 13 for Republicans. Historically, the president's party loses seats in the midterm elections after his re-election.

In GOP-leaning West Virginia, five-term Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller recently announced he would not seek re-election. And on Friday, Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, a Republican, announced that he wouldn't seek a third term.

Democratic incumbents also face tough re-election races in Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina and Alaska ? all carried by Republican Mitt Romney in November's presidential election.

Harkin's move opens a rare open Senate seat Iowa. Harkin, Iowa's junior senator, is outranked by Sen. Charles Grassley, who has held the state's other seat since 1980.

Attention will turn to U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, a fourth-term Democrat from Waterloo who has long been mentioned as a possible Harkin successor. Braley, who was traveling in Iowa, did not immediately return requests by the AP for comments beyond an emailed statement calling Harkin a "mentor" and "progressive force" who leaves "a legacy few will ever match."

Harkin held open the possibility of endorsing a Democrat before the primary if the candidate "is a pragmatic progressive."

Although no Republicans have stepped forward, Harkin's news gives the GOP's private huddles new life.

"There are lots of conversations, but it's very early still," said Nick Ryan, an Iowa Republican campaign fundraiser.

U.S. Rep. Tom Latham of Clive is a seasoned Republican congressman, a veteran House Appropriations Committee member and a robust fundraiser who has won 10 consecutive terms. Aides to Latham declined to comment beyond a statement saying the congressman "respects Sen. Harkin's decision (and) looks forward to continuing to work with him."

Since November, Harkin has stepped up his role as one of the Senate's leading liberal populists.

He was a vocal opponent late last year of Obama's concession to lift the income threshold for higher taxes to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. Harkin instead supported raising taxes on all earners making more than $250,000 a year.

He also endorsed Obama's call for banning assault rifles and larger ammunition magazines after the Connecticut school shooting.

Despite Harkin's strong political position, he has faced questions about his and his wife's role in developing a namesake policy institute at Iowa State University, Harkin's alma mater. The Harkins and their supporters have been pushing for the institute to house papers highlighting his signature achievements, including the ADA and shaping farm policy as the former chairman of the Agriculture Committee.

Harkin has avoided questions about fundraising for the institute after disclosure reports showed some of its largest donors are firms that have benefited from his policies.

Harkin dismissed that those questions had any bearing on his decision.

2 policemen killed after Egypt soccer verdict

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian security officials say a senior police officer and a policeman were shot dead in the Mediterranean city of Port Said after a judge sentenced 21 people to death in connection to one of the world's deadliest incidents of soccer violence.

Officials say that the police were killed when relatives tried to break into the Port Said prison to free the 73 defendants in the case held there.

At least 75 people were wounded in Saturday's violence outside the prison. Port Said residents also cut off the main road leading to the city.

Officials spoke anonymously in line with regulations.

The violence comes after a judge sentenced fans of Port Said's Al-Masry team to death for taking part in the Feb. 1, 2012, soccer violence, which killed 74 fans of Cairo's Al-Ahly club.

Ice storm headed to Midwest overnight

CHICAGO (Reuters) - An ice storm was headed to parts of the Midwest later in the weekend and could create dangerous travel conditions in the region, a weather forecaster said on Saturday.

A warmer air mass was moving north and clashing with the cold front that has hovered over the region in recent days, creating freezing rain, ice and sleet, said Mark Paquette, meteorologist with AccuWeather.com.

"You don't need much ice to have major travel headaches," said Paquette.

The ice storm is expected to begin late on Saturday night in the St. Louis area and northern Missouri, southern and central Iowa and northern Nebraska.

By Sunday afternoon, the ice will spread to Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Ohio, Detroit, Minneapolis and Madison and Milwaukee in Wisconsin.

By Monday the ice could move into the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the country.

Temperatures will be warmer than the frigid levels of recent days in most of the eastern two-thirds of the country, he said.

This winter has been unusually cold and with less snow than usual.

North Korea Is Totally Delusional - Business Insider

North Korea got itself in fist-clenching, foot-stomping twist Wednesday after the U.N. again expanded sanctions against the country.

This recent resolution comes as a direct response to Pyongyang's "successful" long-range rocket launch late last year.

Following the vote, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice told reporters,?"This resolution demonstrates to North Korea that there are unanimous and significant consequences for its flagrant violation of its obligations under previous resolutions."

North Korea responded by saying it was full steam ahead on further missile and nuclear development that would now specifically target the United States. Here's the statement translated by?Reuters' David Chance:

"We are not disguising the fact that the various satellites and long-range rockets that we will fire and the high-level nuclear test we will carry out are targeted at the United States," the country's top military body said.

One successful rocket launch after decades of failures and now Pyongyang is claiming a nuclear program that will actively target the U.S. It's an absurd threat, and here are just a few reasons why.

Wikimedia Commons

A RIM-161 Standard Missile (SM-3) is launched from the Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie

That missile it managed to get into orbit last year, likely with a great degree of help from Iran, was propelled by liquid fuel.

Assuming the North's rocket is similar to the Viking liquid fueled rocket used by the U.S. during the cold war, it's reasonable to expect travel speed of about 4,000 mph.

But using liquid fuel means that in addition to hauling the rocket to its launch pad, Pyongyang then has the tactical problem of topping off two tanks for the 5,000 mile flight to the nearest U.S. target in Hawaii. Every minute an opportunity for the U.S. to blow it up where it sits.

If the missile were to launch and show a U.S. based path, the Navy has 16 Aegis equipped ships?in the Pacific theater with perhaps 20 SM-3 anti-ballistic interceptors each to bring the North Korean missile down. The Aegis system has been successful in taking down missiles for more than 10 years and the most recent configuration SM-3 is very accurate, and reliable.

Then there are the PAC-3 anti-missile systems in South Korea, likely Japan, U.S. bases in Guam and

Hawaii. PAC-3 is also a well-proven missile defense built on the Patriot platform with a long record of successful tests.

Finally, assuming the North's lumbering liquid fueled rocket is still zipping toward Hawaii, there is the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system Robert Gates deployed to Hawaii in 2009 to guard against this exact threat.?

The Lockheed THAAD system also has a long track record of taking down multiple ballistic missiles and each battery holds six launchers.?

Add to that additional anti-ballistic missile options the military has with modified F-16 AIM-9X rockets that can take out medium range missiles and any unknown submarine options and the idea of Pyongyang getting anywhere near U.S. territory is delusional.

But more than its missile technology, delusion is what North Korea has become best known for. The idea that its begun to believe its own propoganda is scarier than any nuclear threat to the U.S.

NASA tests vintage engine from Apollo 11 rocket

A rocket engine that was built to launch the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon more than 40 years ago is again rumbling across the Southern landscape.

The engine, known to NASA engineers as No. F-6049, was supposed to help propel Apollo 11 into orbit in 1969, when NASA sent Neil Armstrong and two other astronauts to the moon for the first manned landing. The flight went off without a hitch, but no thanks to the engine ? it was grounded because of a glitch that cropped up during a test in Mississippi. After Apollo 11, the engine was sent to the Smithsonian Institution, where it sat for years.

Now, young engineers who weren't even born when Armstrong took his one small step are using the bell-shaped motor in tests to determine if technology from Apollo's reliable Saturn V design can be improved for the next generation of U.S. missions back to the moon and beyond by the 2020s.

They're learning to work with technical systems and propellants not used since before the start of the space shuttle program, which first launched in 1981.

Nick Case, 27, and other engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center on Thursday completed a series of 11 test firings of the F-6049's gas generator, a jetlike rocket that produces 30,000 pounds of thrust and was used as a starter for the engine. They are trying to see whether a second-generation version of the Apollo engine could produce even more thrust and be operated with a throttle for deep-space exploration.

There are no plans to send the old engine into space, but it could become a template for a new generation of motors incorporating parts of its design.

Apollo's fire rekindled
In NASA-speak, the old 18-foot-tall (5.5-meter-tall) motor is called an F-1 engine. During moon missions, five of them were arranged at the base of the 363-foot-tall (111-meter-tall) Saturn V system and fired together to power the rocket off the ground toward Earth orbit.

Thursday's test used one part of the engine, the gas generator, which powers the machinery to pump propellant into the main rocket chamber. It doesn't produce the massive orange flame or clouds of smoke like that of a whole F-1, but the sound was deafening as engineers fired the mechanism in an outdoor test stand on a cool, sunny afternoon.

The device produced a plume that resembled a blowtorch the size of two buses and set fire to a grassy area, which was quickly extinguished.

"It's not small," Case said. "It's pretty beefy on its own."

And just like during the Apollo days, people in north Alabama heard rockets thundering in the distance during tests at Marshall.

"My wife and daughter were in our front yard and she said they could hear it, which was pretty cool," Case said after an earlier test. "We live about 15 miles away."

A single F-1 engine can produce 1.5 million pounds of thrust using a fuel composed of liquid oxygen and refined kerosene, which was not used in the space shuttle.

Setting the stage for deep space
The tests were conducted at Marshall in a project conducted with Dynetics Inc. and Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, which are studying NASA's possibilities for deep-space missions years from now. The space agency plans to use commercial launches to reach low Earth orbit; larger rockets are required to escape the planet's gravity.

R.H. Coates, an engineer who works with Case in Marshall's liquid propulsion office, said young engineers can learn a lot from the work done by predecessors using slide rules in the 1960s, but no one wants to simply rebuild the old Saturn V engine.

"This wouldn't be your daddy's F-1," Coates said. "We'd use new materials and try to simplify it, update it."

Case started at Marshall as a high school intern in 2002 and has been working there since graduating from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2008. He said today's technology allows things that weren't possible during the 1960s, but he has been impressed by what he learned taking apart the unused Apollo 11 engine.

Engine No. F-6049 didn't fit properly on the Apollo 11 rocket, but it is invaluable now as a testing tool. Coates said a total of 85 F-1 engines were used on 17 Apollo flights without a single failure.

About a dozen F-1 engines remain in Huntsville, home of NASA's main propulsion center, and others are located elsewhere. Most are on display; Case said engineers used engine No. F-6049 for the tests because it was the most complete.

"It is really an excellent booster," he said. "The guys in Apollo had it right."

Cameron: I don't want a country called Europe

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron walks past a map of Europe on a screen as he walks away after making a speech on holding a referendum on staying in the European Union in London, Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013. Cameron said Wednesday he will offer British citizens a vote on whether to leave the European Union if his party wins the next election, a move which could trigger alarm among fellow member states. He acknowledged that public disillusionment with the EU is "at an all-time high," using a long-awaited speech in central London to say that the terms of Britain's membership in the bloc should be revised and the country's citizens should have a say. (AP) ? British Prime Minister David Cameron wants nothing to do with a United States of Europe, an idea that's gaining currency as the countries that use the euro struggle to fix their debt crisis.

But what if it's a choice between a single country called Europe or a splintered continent? Cameron is determined to avoid that scary scenario.

A day after he shook up Europe's political landscape by offering British citizens the prospect of a vote on whether to stay in the 27-country European Union, Cameron insisted Thursday he wants Britain to remain a part of the bloc but that more unification would not be the answer.

"To try and shoehorn countries into a centralized political union would be a great mistake, and Britain would not be a part of it," he said at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos.

In an interview with The Associated Press afterward, Cameron insisted said he wanted to make Europe "more open, competitive, flexible ? so that we can secure Britain's place within it."

"I think it is eminently achievable," he said.

Many in the EU, particularly among the 17 countries that use the euro, are on a drive for closer political unification, and that's raised particular concerns recently in Britain, which has often viewed the bloc through a business prism.

"If you mean that Europe has to be a political union, a country called Europe, then I disagree," said Cameron. On Wednesday, Cameron put an end to months of speculation by revealing he intends to hold a referendum on Britain's membership of the EU, if he wins the next general election, expected in 2015.

But many politicians in Europe think closer political ties are exactly what is needed to maintain continental unity in the face of a debt crisis that's laid bare fundamental flaws in the euro. The European Union, which last year won the Nobel Peace Prize, effectively started amid the rubble of World War II ? the motivation to avoid future wars.

Some even think Europe's end-game has to be to resemble the United States of America. Countries would be so tied together in their economic and social fabric to make war inconceivable.

After decades of bit-by-bit integration, the links are now so tight that many European leaders refuse to publicly acknowledge that a British exit is a possibility.

Several accuse Cameron of putting the bloc at risk to deal with domestic political problems. His Conservative Party has a hardcore element that is highly skeptical of the EU, while an anti-EU party, the UK Independence Party, is gaining ground in the polls most notably at the expense of Cameron's Conservatives.

Italian Premier Mario Monti said Britain should set aside ideology and look at its membership in the EU with "pragmatism, which should be a British attitude of mind."

He argued that Britons, for all their hostility to EU regulations and bureaucracy, benefit so much from the single market that they would be scared to leave ? a ready access to markets and over half a billion people would be a gamble too far.

Most of British business appears to want to stay in the EU but out of the integrationist drive ? but the question is whether that can be achieved.

"The vast majority of businesses across the UK want to stay in the single market, but on the basis of a revised relationship ... that promotes trade and competitiveness," said John Langworth of the British Chambers of Commerce.

He was among 56 British business leaders who issued a public letter to the Times of London on Thursday complaining about demands from Brussels and calling for "a more competitive, flexible and prosperous European Union that would bring more jobs and growth for all member states."

Growth is certainly something that Europe is craving. The eurozone as a whole is in recession and figures Friday are expected to show the British economy, the EU's third-largest, halfway back to its third recession in four years.

Open Europe, a London-based think tank, says that 48 percent of the UK's goods and services exports are to the EU. The single market keeps down the cost for Britons of doing business with the EU as well as the price of goods imported from the EU for purchase by ordinary British citizens.

Membership gives British citizens the right to live and work anywhere in the EU ? unlike citizens of other countries, who must seek complicated and often hard-to-get residency and work permits.

Mark Gray, a spokesman for the EU, said the bloc affects almost all aspects of the lives of Britons, from the quality of the water they swim in at beaches or in pools, to the quality of the orange juice they have for breakfast and the conditions in the offices where they work.

But many Britons ? like citizens elsewhere in the EU ? see the union as a faceless beast imposing rules and spending on needless things and threatening sovereignty.

Britain's relations with Europe have been strained since the end of World War II. It did not join the European Steel and Coal Community, the forebear of what would later become the European Union, in 1951.

Britain later realized there were benefits accruing from joining up with some of its wartime friends and foes, and joined the evolving European bloc in the 1970s. It has stood against many efforts to forge closer ties, notably the creation of the euro, but was at the forefront of the drive to create a single market.

Preparing for a Career in Culinary Arts | California Vocational Schools

Do you have a passion for food and enjoy preparing it? ?Are you inspired by the food-based reality television shows and channels? ?Are you considering a career in the field of culinary arts? ?Although it is a demanding, tough and competitive field ? for some it can become a creative outlet that is both rewarding on a personal level as well as a professional level.

Earning your degree from a culinary arts program is not the only way to get into the culinary arts field. ?Matter of fact, we asked several top California restaurants which culinary arts schools were on their radars for top candidates and an overwhelming majority said that there is no substitute for hands-on experience. ?Although formal training may allow you to start out as a prep cook rather than a dishwasher, it is also important for those interested in pursuing culinary arts to know that this is what they really want to do. ?The culinary world is a fast-paced, exciting, yet often very stressful environment ? not everyone is cut out for it.

The culinary arts professionals that we spoke with were consistent about a couple of things when it comes to their industry. ?Chef de Cuisine at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, Joshua Whigham, stressed the importance of passion. ??I want to see the hunger in their eyes! ?The understanding of which ? they know nothing.? ?Chef/Owner of Flea Street Caf?, Jesse Cool, agrees with Whigham. ??We love it when we get someone who is there to learn,? she says.

Cool adds that where someone has worked and how long they stayed there is an important factor. ??We don?t necessarily look for people who have been through school as a number one reference,? she adds. ?Sous Chef at Yoshi?s in San Francisco, Matt Shepherd, echoes Cool, ?There is no substitute for hands-on experience in a professional kitchen. ?I started as a dishwasher at 17 and moved my way up the culinary ranks for seven years before enrolling in culinary school.? ?A number of other professional chefs reiterated these points.

Charlie Soule, chef/owner of The Soule Domain for the last 28 years, typically hires kitchen employees at the bottom of the ladder. ?Soule did not attend culinary school himself ? he worked his way up and expects his employees to do the same.

So how do you ensure that you are properly prepared for a career in the culinary arts? ?Listen to the professionals. ?If you have not already worked in a professional kitchen, find one that will take you on. ?Many chefs prefer to have an apprentice or someone new to the field that is eager to learn. ?The skills involved in culinary arts can be taught, whereas the attitude it takes to succeed cannot. ?Because you will work closely with others in fast-paced, ever-changing high-pressure situations, work experience also proves you have the communications and social skills to be part of a team.

Be patient, yet eager to learn and soak up all that you can while you figure out if this is truly your passion. ?Have a very clear understanding of what it is you are committing to. ?Don?t underestimate the time and dedication that it takes to have a successful career in this profession.

Once you have gotten a feel for the industry, perhaps even found a niche (maybe baking or pastry) that excites you, and you believe that enrolling in culinary arts school is the next step for you ?figure out which is the best fit for you!

California boasts one of the most extensive lists of culinary schools in America. ??Options range from the International Culinary program at the Art Institutes, The Le Cordon Bleu campuses, as well as over 30 city colleges all over the state offering culinary programs,? says Shepherd. ?Whether you are an aspiring chef fresh out of high school, or a working professional wanting to add to your resume with additional credentials, California offers a range of educational institutions to match just about anyone?s criteria.

View a list of culinary arts schools in California >

Check to see if the school you wish to attend is accredited. ?The American Culinary Federation (ACF) is the foremost professional chefs association in North America. ?The educational arm of the ACF, the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission (ACFEFAC) assures that a program meets at least a minimum of standards and competencies with a thorough evaluation of their curriculum, facilities, teacher-student ratios, instructor certification and more. ?Accreditation helps you to ensure the quality of the curriculum. ?Although the ACF is the most common agency that grants accreditation, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology and the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education are others.

Chef Whigham advises, ?Culinary schools are a tool to learn the trade of cooking. ?It is really up to individual who attends them if they truly want ?it?!? ?Just as with any other educational program, what you get out of it depends on what you put into it. ?When you are passionate and determined to make the most of your education ? you will walk away with valuable skills and knowledge that will help you to achieve your career goals.

Find a school that is not going to place you in a financial bind. ?As you work toward your goal of earning your certificate or degree, keep in mind that entry level positions don?t pay the big bucks. ?If tuition tops your list of criteria, know that there are many community colleges that offer ACF accredited programs at reasonable prices. ?For instance the accredited culinary arts program at Santa Barbara City College costs state residents just under $2,000 per year. ?Again an education is what you make of it. ?An excellent culinary arts education does not need to break the bank.

In an interview with CookingSchools.com, Chef Walter Potenza was asked if he believed there was a difference between graduating from a prestigious culinary school as opposed to a college with a culinary program. ?He replied, ?Absolutely not.? ?As other chefs we spoke with said, Potenza believes that, ?The art of cooking is embodied in someone.? ?Passion and an understanding of what it takes are vital to making the most of a culinary education.

Don?t let the cooking craze fool you. ?As the popularity of the Food Network and shows such as ?Master Chef? and ?Top Chef? increases, so has the interest in culinary school. ?In order to keep up with the interest and demand for educational programs new culinary schools are beginning to appear all over. ?Although newer schools can provide as valid an education as the ones who have been around for a while ? there are a couple of missing pieces. ?Accreditation is evaluated over time and takes into account the track record of the program. ?Things such as how many students enroll as opposed to graduate.
Schools that have been in existence longer also offer a broader network of alumni. ?These contacts can prove priceless when graduation time nears and the job hunt begins. ?The longer a school has been around, the more graduates it will have working in the culinary world as executive and sous chefs ? the ones that handle the hiring.

The impact of this evolving industry. ?As the culinary world expands and grows, so do the tools and equipment used in the industry. ?This may impact the facilities found in older schools. ?Although some community colleges have been around longer and offer better connections and accreditation, their classrooms and kitchens may not be up to date because of smaller budgets.

Visit the schools that meet your criteria. ?See for yourself what type of experience and equipment their kitchens offer. ?Meet with and talk to the educators and staff. ?Get a feel for their experience and expertise in the field. ?This will directly affect the quality of your education and training. Often, instructors specialize in a specific aspect which will be beneficial to those interested in pursuing that particular concentration.

Make sure that you can roll up your sleeves. ?Keep in mind what the professionals heralded as important to getting into and succeeding in this industry ? hands-on experience. ?A good culinary program should offer its students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience either through an internship, apprentice program or better yet a student run facility that will give them a sense of the real world of culinary arts. ?This means providing students with the ability to work in the same stressful, busy environment that they will find when they enter the workforce after graduating.

FindTheBest, a website that provides unbiased, data driven information on a variety of things offers users the ability to compare several culinary arts programs in California. ?You will find the name of the school, location(s), tuition costs, concentrations and degrees offered, accreditation, how many students are enrolled, whether it is public or private and all of the information you will need to contact the school.

As we found in talking to a number of professional Chefs, the majority of restaurants care less about the specific culinary program that you completed and more about your overall experience, ability, work ethic, and passion. ?Gain some hands-on experience working in different types of restaurants with different types of chefs, cuisines, and establishments. ?Even if it?s washing dishes ? get some practical experience. Talk to people in the field and make sure it?s what you want. Visit local chefs at the type of places you?d like to cook. ?Engage them in conversation and ask them their advice before you dive into a culinary program.

No bombshells expected from Clinton in Benghazi testimony

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discusses the Algerian hostage situation at the State Department Jan. 18, 2013.??No one expects any bombshell revelations about Benghazi when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testifies in Congress on Wednesday about the Sept. 11, 2012, attack that claimed the lives of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens. But Republicans are sure to link that terrorist strike to bloody conflicts across North Africa and in Syria to hammer President Barack Obama?s handling of the war on terrorism.

?They were spiking the ball on al-Qaida throughout the course of this entire campaign,? Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, slated to become his party?s senior member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Fox News on Tuesday.

Recent events?including a deadly hostage crisis in Algeria and France?s military intervention in Mali to battle al-Qaida-linked Islamist fighters there?raise the ?big question of how this administration is dealing with extremists and militants,? Corker said.

(Obama?s inaugural address on Monday went long on priorities like advancing gay rights, battling climate change and overhauling the nation?s immigration laws. He made no mention of terrorism and did not name al-Qaida. But he frequently contended on the campaign trail that Osama bin Laden?s organization had been ?decimated? and was ?on the run.? Aides say ?core? al-Qaida has suffered heavy losses and that Obama?s aggressive expansion of America?s drone war in places like Yemen shows he?s mindful of the rise of dangerous offshoots.)

Clinton, in one of her final acts as America?s top diplomat, will go before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at 9 a.m. and the House Foreign Affairs Committee at 2 p.m.

She had been expected to testify in December, but suffered a concussion in a fall at her home while recovering from a stomach bug, then needed treatment for a blood clot near her brain. She had taken questions from lawmakers on the issue once before, but Republicans complained that she had not shared much information.

?I think she?s been forthcoming, I do,? Corker said. ?I just don?t think it has been extensive up until this time. Because of the injury she sustained from a fall at her home, we?ve only had undersecretaries there.?

The senator added, ?I really don?t expect any bombshells? on Wednesday. Still, he said, ?this is the beginning, really? of a process that should see a ?top-to-bottom review? of the State Department?s process of handling security concerns at its overseas posts.

?It?s almost full of sclerosis and unable to really attend to the issues of security and make decisions that need to be made in this regard," Corker said.

Clinton will appear one day before Democratic Sen. John Kerry goes before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee he used to chair for a confirmation hearing to succeed her as secretary of state. Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez, Kerry?s successor, will lead both hearings.

Republican Sen. John McCain, who has frequently assailed the administration over the attack on the consulate in Benghazi and who recently joined the committee, will join in the questioning of Clinton and Kerry. Earlier this month, McCain released a list of questions that he planned to ask regarding Benghazi.

The Sept. 11 attack raised new questions about Obama?s handling of the ?Arab Spring? uprisings that toppled authoritarian regimes in places like Egypt and Libya. It also triggered a months-long battle over how the administration handled repeated requests from Stevens for more security and then explained the tragedy to the American public.

Most notably, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration to be Clinton?s successor in the face of Republican opposition. Rice went on major Sunday news shows one week after the attack in Benghazi and, relying on administration-approved talking points, described it as emerging from a protest against an Internet video that ridicules Islam. There was no such demonstration.

Some of the anger has fizzled, sapped by contentious congressional hearings and a scathing report commissioned by Clinton that faulted the State Department for its handling of repeated requests from Stevens for more security. That report also refuted media reports that the administration chose not to send in troops who might have been able to save Stevens and his colleagues. (Hillary Clinton herself took at least symbolic responsibility in October.)

But Clinton is sure to face tough questions about the security failures in Benghazi, notably in the face of warnings from Stevens and others that Islamists were increasingly active in Libya. She will also likely be asked about the administration's changing public explanation of what happened.

?It is important to learn all we can about what happened in Benghazi because at the end of the day, it could happen again. After all, al-Qaida and associated groups plan to attack over and over again, as we saw most recently in Algeria," House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce, R-Calif., said last week.

"My intention is for this hearing to focus on why this attack was not better anticipated, what leadership failures at the State Department existed, and what management deficiencies need to be corrected in order to better secure our diplomatic facilities abroad and protect our diplomats serving in them," Royce said.

Obama initially connected the attack with the Sept. 11, 2001, strikes rhetorically as "acts of terror," but the administration went on to link it to popular Muslim anger over an Internet video ridiculing Islam. Republicans accused the administration of misleading the public by playing down intelligence that it was a terrorist attack. The White House flatly denies deliberately misleading the public.
