CSN: MLB writers need to chill with Hall of Fame

November 28, 2012, 12:16 pm

With the Hall of Fame candidates released today by the Baseball Writers Association of America, Canada, Japan, Various Hispanic Nations and All The Ships At Sea, the moralists are back in full flight and plumage.

Oh, hurray.

The debate that always seems to happen on this subject is thus resumed, with no resolution or even advancement in thought on either side expected. In other words, let the apoplectic shouting resume.

In fact, let me add to it by pointing out something to those voters who prefer to make their annual petulant stand on performance enhancing drug use and Hall of Fame ? something they may have forgotten in their annual blood pressure spike.

YOU DON?T WORK FOR BASEBALL! YOU ARE NOT GUARDIANS OF THE GAME! IT IS NEITHER YOUR JOB, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY OR EVEN YOUR RIGHT TO KEEP THE GAME PURE OF MISCREANTS WHEN IT SHOWS EVERY DAY THAT IT DOESN?T WANT TO BE!

And might I add:

YOU SILLY SELF-DELUDED BASTARDS!

I just needed to get that last one off my chest. Sorry.

All the other arguments about whether Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, et. al., deserve inclusion have been exhausted, to no effect. People long ago stopped listening anyway, which is why shouting is the only way to even get any aerobic exercise on this topic any more.

So let us deal with the new round of explanations and rationalizations in the only way that seems to make even a ripple ? by shouting. And in no particular order:

THE HALL OF FAME IS NOT CHURCH. IT IS THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL, FOR GOOD AND ILL. IF IT ISN?T, THEN WHY ARE THE MEN WHO DEFENDED THE COLOR LINE IN THE HALL? WHY IS TY COBB IN THE HALL? WHY IS KENESAW MOUNTAIN LANDIS IN THE HALL? THEY ARE PART OF THE HISTORY, TOO. REMEMBER?

Next:

GIVEN THAT THE OWNERS HAD BEEN WARNED ABOUT THE DANGERS OF STEROIDS IN PARTICULAR BACK IN 1988 AND DID NOTHING ABOUT IT FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, WASN?T PED USE THE INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR MORE THAN A DECADE? YES, IT WAS. THEIR RULES, NOT YOURS.

And then:

WHEN DID JOURNALISTS START DEFENDING THE ERADICATION OF PEOPLE AND FACTS TO ACHIEVE A DESIRED END FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEOPLE THEY ALLEGEDLY OBJECTIVELY COVER? IF YOU CAN ANSWER THAT WITH A WORD OTHER THAN ?NEVER,? YOU SHOULD PROBABLY QUIT YOUR JOB.

[RELATED: Bonds, Sosa, Clemens on 2013 HOF ballot]

Not to mention:

HOW IS IT DEFENSIBLE NOT TO VOTE FOR JEFF BAGWELL BASED ON A SUSPICION, AS YET NEITHER PROVEN NOR EVEN EVIDENCED, THAT HE MIGHT HAVE DONE SOMETHING AT SOME POINT TO EXPLAIN HIS ACHIEVEMENTS? YOU?RE COMFORTABLE WITH THAT LEVEL OF INTELLECTUAL DISHONESTY?

And might I add:

SINCE WHEN IS CRAIG BIGGIO?S CASE FOR INCLUSION ENHANCED BY THE NOTION THAT HE HAS NEVER BEEN SUSPECTED OF PED USE? IF I SAID OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD THAT I THINK HE USED BRAZILIAN WOMBAT EXTRACT FOR SIX WEEKS TO HELP HIM TRANSITION TO THE RIGORS OF SECOND BASE IN 1992, CAN I KEEP HIM OFF MY BALLOT? DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE TO YOU AT ALL?

By the way, I?m voting for Craig Biggio, so don?t try to misconstrue that last one.

WHEN WERE YOU HIRED TO DEFEND THE MYTHICAL PURITY OF THE GAME? WHO PAID YOU TO DO THIS? YOUR WHY DO YOU HAVE A STAKE IN DISTORTING HISTORY, OR DEFENDING NUMBERS? WHY IS REALITY NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU?

And might I add a corollary:

ISN?T IT BETTER FOR YOUR CASE TO VOTE IN PLAYERS YOU KNOW OR THINK USED PERFORMANCE ENHANCERS SO THAT BASEBALL CAN LIVE WITH THE SHAME THAT COMES FROM LOOKING THE OTHER WAY ON WHAT WERE ACTUALLY FELONIES? I MEAN, IF YOU HAVE A STAKE IN CLEANING UP THE GAME, WHICH YOU SHOULDN?T, ISN?T REMINDING THE INDUSTRY OF ITS OCCASIONAL SYSTEMATIC FAILURES PART OF THAT JOB?

And finally, because my voice is giving out:

VOTE FOR WHOMEVER THE HELL YOU WANT. LET A THOUSAND FLOWERS BLOOM, AS THAT GRAND OLD BALL FAN MAO ZEDONG ONCE SAID. JUST DON?T TELL US YOU DID IT BECAUSE THE GAME DESERVES TO BE REPRESENTED BY THE FINEST CALIBER PEOPLE. BASEBALL IS ALL CLASSES OF PEOPLE, MISCREANTS, NOBLEMEN AND ALL POINTS IN BETWEEN, AND THAT'S WHAT IT DESERVES. YOU CAN?T CHANGE THAT, AND CASTING A VOTE WITH THAT IN MIND DISTORTS WHAT YOU SEE AND WRITE ABOUT.

And if you think baseball should reward only clean players and punish PED users, please remember this:

MELKY CABRERA JUST GOT A RAISE FROM HIS 2012 CONTRACT. IF BASEBALL IS FINE WITH THAT, WHY DO YOU THINK YOUR STANDARD FOR THEIR HALL SUPERCEDES THEIR OBVIOUS POSITION ON THE MATTER?

Okay. I?m going to melt down some cough drops and shoot them directly into my larynx now. I did the best I could. Plus, I called a lot of people I know and like ?silly, self-deluded bastards? in print. That, to me, is a very good day?s work.

Read all about it: Pope has not cancelled Christmas

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - And so it came to pass that in the eighth year of Pope Benedict's reign, some tabloid and social media decreed that he had cancelled Christmas.

The day after Benedict's latest book "The Infancy Narratives - Jesus of Nazareth" - was published on November 20, Vatican officials found some headlines they were not expecting.

"Killjoy pope crushes Christmas nativity traditions," read one tabloid headline, claiming that Benedict had snubbed traditions such as animals in nativity scenes and caroling.

"Pope sets out to debunk Christmas myths," ran another.

Holy Scrooge! Some blogs unceremoniously branded Benedict the new Grinch that stole Christmas and one rocketed him to the "top of the grumpy list for 2012."

And then there was this zinger headline from a web news site: "Pope bans Christmas".

Coming little more than a month before Christmas, it was the last thing the Vatican needed - another image problem for the pope.

Alarmed by some of the headlines, the Catholic social network XT3 felt compelled to run a blog that dissected the media's coverage of the book.

It was headlined: "The pope has not banned Christmas".

So what was all the fuss about?

In the 137-page book, the pope states a fact: that in the gospels there is "no reference" to the presence of animals in the stable - actually, it was probably a cave - where Jesus was born.

Bloggers had a feast with that, with one calling it "Bombshell number one".

What some neglected was that just a few sentences down, the pope states that even today, "No representation of the crib is complete without the ox and the ass".

He explains: The tradition of the ass and ox came from reflecting on parts of the Old and New Testaments. Christian iconography then adopted the motif early in Church history to show that even animals knew Jesus was the son of God.

KEEP ON CAROLLING

In other words, the tradition that has developed over the centuries matters more than an unverifiable fact, at least as far as the case of the ox and ass in the stable is concerned.

"I think that what people need to realize here is that the pope is trying to be as historical as he can be," said Father Robert Dodaro, professor of patristics, or the study of early Church writings, at Rome's Patristic Institute.

"He wants to see the biblical narratives as history where possible but he is also trying to explain details in the narratives that cannot be historically verified," he said.

Some bloggers, taking their cue from television and website headlines, even wrote that the pope had spoken out against Christmas carols.

In the book, the opposite was true.

Benedict says the evangelist Luke wrote that at the moment of Jesus' birth the angels "said" the well-known phrase "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased".

But in the next line he explains that "Christianity has always understood that the speech of angels is actually song", that "the angels' song of praise has never gone silent", and that it is "only natural that simple believers (even today) join in their caroling on the Holy Night".

So, no need to cancel any school performances.

Another section of the book that irked some bloggers is where the pope restates what biblical scholars have known for decades, if not centuries - that Jesus was born several years earlier than the first century AD.

Benedict writes that since King Herod died in 4 BC, Jesus was probably born "a few years earlier". He attributes the erroneous fixing of the year of Jesus' birth to a miscalculation by the monk Dionysius Exiguous some 500 years later.

"No one's faith should be shaken by this book," said Dodaro. "On the contrary, it should be fortified by this account. This is a believable account of the birth of Christ," he said.

And in St Peter's Square, workmen have started building the Vatican's larger than life nativity scene, which is expected to have animals and singing angels.

South Korea to sack Jill Kelley as honorary consul

/

Jill Kelley leaves her home in Tampa, Fla., on Nov. 13.

By NBC News and news services

Jill Kelley, the Tampa, Fla., socialite who inadvertently launched the FBI investigation that led to the resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus, will be sacked as an ?honorary consul? for South Korea because she used the title for personal gain, a senior official said Monday during a U.S. visit.

South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kyou-hyun first revealed Kelley?s removal from the post, which pays $2,500 a year, on Monday during a visit to Washington, South Korea?s Yonhap news agency reported.

"It's not suitable to the status of honorary consul that (she) sought to be involved in commercial projects and peddle influence," Yonhap quoted Kim as saying.

The Associated Press reported that an unidentified government official in Seoul confirmed the action on Tuesday.

The South Korean Embassy in Washington, D.C., did not immediately return phone calls from NBC News seeking comment.

It was not immediately clear what Kim was referring to as far as Kelley?s alleged efforts to benefit from the honorary consul post.

A New York businessman, Adam Victor, told Dateline NBC that Kelley was introduced to him at the Republican National Convention in Tampa in August as someone whose friendship with Petraeus would help facilitate a no-bid deal with South Korea on a coal-gasification project. She would supposedly be in a position to help broker the billion-dollar deal directly with the Korean president, and expected a 2 percent commission, according to Victor, president and chief executive officer of TransGas Development Systems.

ABC News has reported that it reviewed emails that appear to support Victor?s account.?

But Abbe Lowell, a Washington, D.C., attorney representing Kelley, on Tuesday disputed Victor's account, telling NBC News that the businessman?misrepresented the fee that was discussed, that Kelley never accepted any offer and that Victor falsely claimed that the discussions had anything to do with her connections with the U.S. military.

The 37-year-old Kelley also cited her honorary post in 9-1-1 calls complaining about members of the media who besieged her house after the Petraeus scandal broke, incorrectly maintaining that it entitled her to some type of diplomatic protection.

"I'm an honorary consul general, so I have inviolability, so they should not be able to cross my property," she said on tapes released earlier this month. "I don't know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved as well, because that's against the law to cross my property because, you know, it's inviolable."

A senior South Korean Foreign Ministry official who handles consulate affairs in the United States told the AP on Tuesday that honorary consuls don't have diplomatic immunity, and that the ministry applies much less strict standards in appointing them than it does for potential government officials.

Kelley also had worked as a volunteer ?social liaison? to MacDill Air Force Base until mid-November, when her participation in the ?Friends of MacDill? program was revoked as the Petraeus scandal erupted.

Kelley met Petraeus after he took over as head of U.S. Central Command at MacDill in October 2008, and became friends with him and his wife, Holly, during his time there.

Kelley emails: Petraeus, Allen asked me to help silence 'Bubba the Love Sponge'

As their secret dissolved, Petraeus, Broadwell chatted at awards dinner

Numerous government and law enforcement officials have told NBC News that Kelley inadvertently triggered the FBI investigation that led to Petraeus? resignation as CIA chief on Nov. 9, citing an extramarital affair.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, say Kelley complained in mid-May to an FBI agent she was acquainted with about harassing anonymous emails warning her to stay away from Petraeus. The agent turned over the emails to the local FBI cyber investigations unit, which traced them to Paula Broadwell, Petreus? biographer, the officials said.

In the course of the investigation, the agents discovered evidence that Petreaus and Broadwell had engaged in an extramarital affair, they said.

Kelley has largely remained silent since her role in the case became public shortly after Petraeus resigned. She and her husband, Scott, issued a single statement on Nov. 11, saying, "We and our family have been friends with Gen. Petraeus and his family for over five years. We respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children."

In a separate investigation, the Pentagon?s inspector general is looking into ?potentially inappropriate? emails that Kelley exchanged with Petraeus? temporary successor as CentCom commander, Marine Gen. John Allen, defense officials tell NBC News.

The officials say a small number of the emails contained language that could be considered ?inappropriate? or even ?suggestive.? They also said that the investigation was deemed necessary to remove any suggestion that the Pentagon was covering up any improprieties by Allen, who remains in command of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan pending the outcome of the probe.

And sources close to Kelley have?denied speculation that she had any kind of inappropriate relationship with Allen and praised her work at MacDill, which they noted was recognized by authorities there.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

New Clean Energy Source Found Using Plants and Bacteria

Published on November 27, 2012 by admin ????? No Comments

Phys.org

An unexpected source of new, clean energy has been found: the Plant-Microbial Fuel Cell that can generate electricity from the natural interaction between living plant roots and soil bacteria. The technique already works on a small scale and will soon be applied in larger marshland areas throughout the world.

On 23 November, researcher Marjolein Helder defended her PhD research on generating electricity via plants at Wageningen University. She has also founded a spin-off company called Plant-e with her colleague David Strik.

The Plant-Microbial Fuel Cell draws electricity from the soil while the plants continue to grow. Plants produce organic material via photosynthesis. The roots excrete up to 70 % of this material (unused) into the soil. Bacteria around the roots break down the organic residue, thereby forming a new source of electricity. The degradation processes causes electrons to be released. Marjolein Helder and her colleagues placed an electrode close to the bacteria to absorb these electrons and generate electricity via the potential difference thus created.

The Plant-Microbial Fuel Cell can currently generate 0.4 Watt per square metre of plant growth. This is more than is generated by fermenting biomass. In future, bio-electricity from plants could produce as much as 3.2 Watt per square metre of plant growth. This would mean that a roof measuring 100 m2 would generate enough electricity to supply a household (with an average consumption of 2,800 kWh/year). Plants of various species could be used, including grasses such as common cordgrass and, in warmer countries, rice?

Roller coaster ruins won't stay as 'tourist attraction'

Mario Tama / Getty Images

Waves are seen on Nov. 16 breaking around a roller coaster destroyed during Superstorm Sandy in Seaside Heights, N.J.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

A crumpled roller coaster partially submerged in the Atlantic Ocean off of New Jersey's boardwalk won't stay there as a "tourist attraction," despite the town's mayor advocating for that a week ago.

The iconic Star Jet roller coaster in Seaside Heights was destroyed when Sandy crashed ashore Oct. 29, wrecking parts of Casino Pier and tearing the coaster from the boardwalk.

On Monday, Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers said that borough officials and Casino Pier owners have been in talks to remove the coaster from the ocean, where it has sat since the storm, reported The Asbury Park Press.

Akers got criticized when he told NBC New York last week that he was working with the Coast Guard to see if the ride was stable enough to just leave as-is.?

If it was, he said, it would make "a great tourist attraction."

Mario Tama / Getty Images

The destroyed roller coaster is seen in Seaside Heights, N.J., on Oct. 31.

His comments came after demolition crews finished removing the rest of the damage in the area in preparation for businesses to rebuild on the boardwalk, the town's financial and communal beating heart.

?Everyone all over on Facebook was commenting on it and took a shot at me,?? Akers said, according to The Asbury Park Press.?

On Monday, Akers tried to clarify his "tourist attraction" remark.

"I told them [NBC New York], that I did not have an issue with it [staying], it?s not my decision since its private property,?? Akers said to The Asbury Park Press. ?That was the extent of my comment, and then all of this firestorm. It was not the brightest comment.??

He added, ?If it was going to stay, there are issues...??Does it have to be anchored down properly? And the Coast Guard would need to approve it. The whole situation is unfortunate.??

According to Akers, tourism makes up 75 percent of Seaside Heights' budget, with the remaining 25 percent coming from property owners.?

?Our biggest concern is returning the boardwalk to where it was before the storm,?? he told The Asbury Park Press.??Tourism is the lifeblood of this town."

Construction of a new boardwalk is scheduled to begin in January and be ready by Memorial Day, according to NBC New York. Casino Pier officials are still assessing the cost of the damage.

Courtesy Joel A. Rogers of CoasterGallery.com

An archival image of the Star Jet is seen at the Casino Pier, N.J., in 2007.

The now-defunct Star Jet roller coaster was built in 2002?by Portland, Ore.-based E&F Miler Industries. It replaced a decades-old roller coaster that had been in its spot and was demolished to make room for the new steel one, Fred Miler, principal of E&F Miler, told NBC News on Tuesday.

The ride had a maximum height of 52 feet, according to coastergallery.com.

Its name, Miler said, has caused some confusion.

"It's called the Star Jet," he said. "There was another coaster there that it replaced -- it was called the Jet Star. Sometimes they still use that name."

Johansson: Watching 'Psycho' 'petrified me'

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

It's Scarlett Johansson Tuesday on TODAY! And having tackled the weather (due to Al Roker's laryngitis) and otherwise utterly charmed everyone on the show, the four-time Golden Globe nominee sat down with Matt Lauer to address the real reason she was hanging out -- her new film, "Hitchcock."

In the film, Johansson plays actress Janet Leigh, star of Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Psycho," and said it was a real treat to work alongside Oscar-winning stars Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren (who play Hitchcock and his wife Alma respectively). There was no need for "Sir" or "Dame" on the set, she noted: "They're incredibly casual; it's 'Tony,' of course ... and Helen, we just called her, 'Hey you.'"

Less pleasant was actually seeing "Psycho" at a very young age, she recalled: "I was raised on Hitchcock films," she said. "My mother is a huge film buff and I saw 'Psycho' probably when I was too young, I mean I was like 7 or 8 and it was incredibly traumatizing. ... It petrified me."

Evan Agostini / AP

As an adult, however, she was probably equally traumatized by re-enacting the famous shower scene from the film. In "Hitchcock," the director isn't convinced by Leigh's screams, so he steps in to terrify her properly -- and it worked, on both Leigh and Johansson, who flashed back to another of Hopkins' iconic roles.

"When you have Tony Hopkins there stabbing at you with a completely frenzied psychotic look on his face, you don?t need (the film's classic soundtrack to get in the mood)," said Johansson. "Seeing his ("Silence of the Lambs" character) Hannibal Lecter from also way too young was enough to give me that naturalistic feeling."

Fortunately, ScarJo appears to have recovered nicely, even if she is exploring her options as weather lady.

"Hitchcock" opened in limited U.S. theaters on Nov. 23.

AP Source: Reds and Broxton in 'substantial' talks

(AP) ? Reliever Jonathan Broxton is having "substantial talks" with the Cincinnati Reds about a multiyear deal, a person familiar with the negotiations said on Monday.

Broxton also is talking to several other teams, looking for a good fit for the next few years, said the person speaking on condition of anonymity because no deal has been reached.

The Reds got Broxton in a trade with Kansas City last July to solidify their bullpen. He became a free agent after going 3-3 with a 2.82 ERA and four saves in six chances for Cincinnati. Broxton had 23 saves in 27 chances with Kansas City before the trade.

Broxton's priority is a multiyear deal with a team that would use him in a set-up or closer's role, said the person familiar with the talks. He's hoping to have an agreement with a team this week.

By signing Broxton, the NL Central champions could move left-hander Aroldis Chapman and his 100 mph fastball back into a starter's role. They had planned to give him a chance to win a spot in the rotation during spring training, but closer Ryan Madson tore a ligament in his pitching elbow and needed reconstructive surgery.

Manager Dusty Baker eased Chapman into the closer's role and got sensational results. Chapman, who had never closed games in his career, saved 27 consecutive chances and was 38 of 43 overall in save opportunities with a 1.55 ERA in 68 appearances.

Broxton moved into the closer's role in September when Chapman developed a tired shoulder, saving all of his four chances.

The 28-year-old Broxton missed most of the 2011 season with the Dodgers because of a bone spur in his elbow that required surgery. He agreed to a $4 million, one-year deal with Kansas City last season, starting as a set-up man for closer Joakim Soria. He assumed the closing role in March, when Soria had to have reconstructive elbow surgery.

New Congress: Fewer moderates make deals harder

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When the next Congress cranks up in January, there will be more women, many new faces and 11 fewer tea party-backed House Republicans from the class of 2010 who sought a second term.

Overriding those changes, though, is a thinning of pragmatic, centrist veterans in both parties. Among those leaving are some of the Senate's most pragmatic lawmakers, nearly half the House's centrist Blue Dog Democrats and several moderate House Republicans.

That could leave the parties more polarized even as President Barack Obama and congressional leaders talk up the cooperation needed to tackle complex, vexing problems such as curbing deficits, revamping tax laws and culling savings from Medicare and other costly, popular programs.

"This movement away from the center, at a time when issues have to be resolved from the middle, makes it much more difficult to find solutions to major problems," said William Hoagland, senior vice president of the Bipartisan Policy Center, a private group advocating compromise.

In the Senate, moderate Scott Brown, R-Mass., lost to Democrat Elizabeth Warren, who will be one of the most liberal members. Another GOP moderate, Richard Lugar of Indiana, fell in the primary election. Two others, Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Olympia Snowe of Maine, are retiring.

Moderate Democratic senators such as Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Jim Webb of Virginia are leaving, as is Democratic-leaning independent Joe Lieberman.

While about half the incoming 12 Senate freshmen of both parties are moderates, new arrivals include tea party Republican Ted Cruz of Texas, conservative Deb Fischer of Nebraska, and liberals such as Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Hawaii's Mazie Hirono.

There's a similar pattern in the House, where 10 of the 24 Democratic Blue Dogs lost, are retiring or, in the case of Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., are moving to the Senate. That will further slash a centrist group that just a few years ago had more than 50 members, though some new freshmen might join.

Among Republicans, moderates like Reps. Judy Biggert of Illinois and New Hampshire's Charles Bass were defeated while others such as Reps. Jerry Lewis of California and Steven LaTourette of Ohio decided to retire.

"Congress seems to be going in the opposite direction of the country, just as the country is screaming for solutions to gridlock," said Democratic strategist Phil Singer.

Whether the changes are good is often in the eye of the beholder.

Seventy-one of the 83 House GOP freshmen of 2010 were re-elected Nov. 6, but 11 lost, including one of the group's highest profile members, conservative Rep. Allen West, R-Fla. Another faces a runoff in December.

"Some of the people who are the anti-government ideologues, some of them are gone," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "And that message has been rejected by the American people."

Sal Russo, strategist for the Tea Party Express, said such departures would be balanced by newly elected conservatives, including the Senate's Cruz and GOP Reps.-elect Ted Yoho of Florida and Mark Meadows of North Carolina.

"Pretty much everybody that ran in 2012 was talking about the economic woes we face, stopping excessive spending, controlling unsustainable debt," he said.

Overall, the new House is on track for a 234-201 Republican majority, a narrowing of their 242-193 advantage today, which includes five vacancies. Democrats will control the Senate 55-45, up from 53-47.

A dozen of the 100 senators and at least 81 of the 435 House members, almost one-fifth, will be in their first term, slightly above historic averages. The Associated Press hasn't declared winners in two House races.

Many newcomers, in Washington for orientation sessions after their election, described a need to compromise. Some also made it clear there will be plenty of fuel for partisan clashes.

"I'm going in open-minded," said conservative Rep.-elect Roger Williams, R-Texas. "But I have certain core values like we all do and I'm not going to waver on that."

All together, there will be 73 women in the House and 20 in the Senate. Both are records.

For the first time, more than half of House Democrats ? 105, in this case ? will not be white males.

One white male will be Rep.-elect Joseph Kennedy III, a Massachusetts Democrat whose father was Rep. Joe Kennedy, D-Mass., and grandfather was New York Sen. and Democratic presidential candidate Robert Kennedy. When the newest Kennedy takes office, it will end the only two years since 1947 without a member of his family in Congress.

Those leaving include several who have been in the middle of recent years' policy battles.

Among them are Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., the GOP's No. 2 Senate leader; Indiana's Lugar, a longtime GOP power on foreign policy; North Dakota's Conrad, the Senate Budget Committee chairman and one of his party's chief deficit foes; and Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., who heads the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Gone from the House will be California Democratic Reps. Pete Stark, a major force on health issues, and Howard Berman, long influential in foreign affairs, plus liberal Massachusetts stalwart Barney Frank, whose name is on the new law overhauling the government's regulation of banks and other financial institutions.

Also leaving: House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier, R-Calif., and Ron Paul, 77, who charted his own libertarian course in Congress and long-shot campaigns for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008 and 2012.

"The status quo will continue," Paul, who sees little difference between the two political parties, said of the new Congress. As for his own departure, he said, "Nobody will notice."

Why Are Hotel Rooms So Expensive?

Hotel room of the Renaissance Hotel in Columbus, Ohio. What goes into pricing hotel rooms?

Slate asked our readers to assign us stories, and more than 1,000 of you wanted me to explain why hotels are so expensive. As a reader noted, ?The cheapest hotel room in my city?s downtown is $90/night, while apartments run about $700-1000/month?closer to $30/night,? a huge difference.

There?s not a single reason why hotel rooms are so much more expensive on a per night basis than ordinary housing. But one place to start is taxes. Local tax codes tend to treat homeowners relatively favorably. There are some ideological and substantive reasons for this, and also crass politics. Homeowners, as a class, are more likely to be stable long-term members of their community who vote in city council elections. A hotel guest is just the reverse?a transient who can?t vote. So in addition to the underlying commercial real estate taxes that are probably higher than what?s levied on residences, hotel guests need to pay sales taxes and special excise taxes.

In New York City, for example, a hotel room is subject to 8.875 percent worth of state and local sales taxes, plus a Hotel Occupancy Tax that runs to 5.875 percent plus an extra $3.50 in most cases.

The Global Business Travel Association rates New York?s as the most burdensome hotel tax situation in the country, but one interesting finding of theirs is that there?s actually relatively little variation. My assignment seems to have come from a reader in St. Louis. In that city, you?ll pay 8.491 percent state and city sales taxes and 7.25 percent in earmarked hotel taxes. And commercial real estate in general pays a 32 percent tax rate, far higher than the 19 percent levied on residential property.

Another reason for the high cost of hotels is their location. Mainstream hotels offer premium locations in central business districts or near key attractions, and they tend to invest in what you?d ordinarily consider an unreasonably high level of service. The typical hotel guest doesn?t have a maid cleaning his bedroom at home on a daily basis, or the services of a downstairs concierge. But these are typical add-ons at a standard hotel.?

Hotel customers tolerate these marked-up amenities because they generally aren?t very interested in driving a hard bargain. The business traveler is likely to feel that he ?needs? appropriately located accommodations and isn?t going to be interested in exhaustive research about the costs and benefits of staying someplace cheaper and more remote. What?s more, he?s generally not paying out of pocket. A responsible employee will of course try to be reasonably frugal, but even so frugality is benchmarked to local costs. That encourages a market that?s biased toward higher price points. The existence of premium business travelers who can fully pass on costs on to clients (think fancy lawyers and consultants) further pushes the market up. What?s more, even when people do pay for their own work travel, the cost is tax deductible. If a journalist travels for a freelance assignment or speaking engagement, it makes sense to take extra consumption in the form of staying in a nicer hotel with pre-tax dollars than to spend after-tax dollars at home.

Tourists may be more frugal. But even so, for many vacationers (especially in America) time is in shorter supply than money, so it makes sense to invest extra money in ensuring that the time is well spent.

Last but by no means least, hotels can market unsold inventory without cutting the price of every room. Say I have 85 out of a 100 rooms booked at $100 a night. Cutting the price of every room by $5 will cost me $425 and then I have to hope that I get at least five extra bookings for my trouble. It makes more sense to take my 15 spare rooms and directly market them to price-sensitive customers by using a specialized reseller like Hotwire. Hotwire sells bargain hotel rooms, but ?opaquely?: You only get to know the hotel?s neighborhood and star rating, not its name, when you book. That annoyance screens for price-sensitive customers and offers a better strategy than broad discounts. Alternatively, unsold inventory can be offered as free upgrades to members of your hotel?s loyalty program. In effect you?re giving a targeted discount to a high-volume customer?smarter, again, than flat rate cuts.

In the ordinary housing market, everyone is in effect a high-volume customer booking long-term leases. And the vast majority of customers are knowledgeable about the city, moderately patient, and thus in a position to drive a reasonably hard bargain. Consequently, the apartment market targets a broader spectrum of customers. Very expensive luxury units are available, but so are cheap ones (except in cities where zoning is blocking new construction).

One fascinating recent development is the rise of companies such as Airbnb that essentially turn spare apartments or rooms into hotel beds. This offers new opportunities for price-sensitive travelers and undermines hotels. Airbnb doesn?t eliminate the market dynamics that tend to push hotel prices up, but it does at least create countervailing pressure. One possibility is that hotels will get cheaper in response. Another is that the share of the market held by formal hotels will simply shrink somewhat. In that scenario, traditional urban hotels would come to specialize even more narrowly in business travelers and high-end tourists, and average prices would go even higher.

Everything About Epublishing (or Where to Find it)

Howdy folks,

Like most writers, I can?t afford to ?just write.? Like most writers, I have to hold down a day job. That?s pretty much where the similarities end.

Unlike most writers who have a day job, I don?t work 6 or 8 or 12 hours a day, four or five days a week. I work 10 to 16 hours a day, roughly 28 days a month. I don?t receive a regular paycheck with a company logo on it every week or every two weeks or once a month. My paychecks show up in varying amounts and at varying times in my PO Box or my PayPal account. Strictly speaking, the income I derive from my day job is termed ?disposable income.? To earn it, I compete with movies and miniature golf and a weekend trip to the lake and the family vacation and dinner out once a week and that new smart phone or camera or laptop or other gadget. In other words, the services I provide in my day job are not absolutely neccessary for survival. I don?t provide food, shelter, clothing or water. And let?s face it, everything else?including everything I provide?is a luxury? well, unless you?re serious about writing. If you want to see a professional outcome, you hire a professional. That?s really all there is to it.

But the fact is, some people can?t afford to pay for my services although I keep those services as affordable as possible. I constantly hear things like ?We?d really like to have you come share your knowledge about epublishing (or editing or writing or?) but we need to know the miminum you?re willing to charge and the minimum number of attendees who would be required to show up.?

(Okay, first, you?re asking me to come to you, so who?s going to show up shouldn?t be a bargaining point. On your end everybody should show up. If you want to know what I know, especially at bargain rates, showing up should be your Number One priority. Second, I?m not coming back to you with, ?Well, what?s the maximum you?re willing to pay?? only because I?m really not into bickering and I need to move on to other pressing matters.)

But I digress? leave it to a teacher to contain within him the constant urge to lecture. Anyway, It Just Is What It Is, so given that, plus my propensity to give greater weight to getting the word out than earning a paycheck from it, here are a few things you really should do if you don?t want to have to pay a guy like me to come share my knowledge about epublishing:

1. This is a biggie. Go to StoneThreadPublishing.com and read both the About page and the FAQ page. The fifteen minutes or so that you spend there will give you most of the basic knowledge you need and correct some pretty severe but common misconceptions. I also invite you to check out StoneThread as a possible publishing venue for your novel, memoir or short fiction collection. We run some excellent free contests too. See the Contests tab.

2. Go to HarveyStanbrough.com. If you haven?t already, sign up for my blog posts and get a free humorous ebook on writing. But even if you don?t sign up (content is currently open to everyone), click on the Blog tab and scroll down through the posts. You?ll find several on Epublishing and even one or two on Emarketing? and a lot of other good stuff too. Check out the Writers? Resources while you?re there, and click our Events Calendar to see all the new seminars we have coming up.

3. Go to Smashwords.com and download their free Smashwords Style Guide and Smashwords Book Marketing Guide in PDF. The author?s style is a bit convoluted, but all the information is there if you don?t mind waiding through segments of ?what you don?t need to do.?

4. This is another biggie. Go to DeanWesleySmith.com and read his Think Like A Publisher series. If you want to publish your own work on paper and/or via ebooks, this is an absolute necessity, and I am not using the phrase lightly.

5. Go to Kindle Digital Publishing at Amazon.com and read their FAQs.

6. Go to PubIt at BarnesAndNoble.com and read their FAQs.

Here are a few generalities you need to understand:

1. Smashwords, Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Diesel, Kobo, Sony et al are not publishers. They are sales venues. You are the publisher. (Okay, in the Bowker records, since you?ll want to use the free Smashwords ISBN, Smashwords will be the publisher of record, but that really doesn?t matter. In the front matter of your book it should say ?a YourName or Whatever publication.?)

2. Smashwords, Amazon and Barnes & Noble will convert your correctly formatted (see the Smashwords Style Guide or attend my upcoming seminar on The Essentials of Digital Publishing) and uploaded Microsoft Word file.

3. Amazon will not distribute your book outside of Amazon, although they currently have venues worldwide (for a list, see StoneThread?s FAQ).

4. Barnes & Noble will not distribute your book outside of Barnes & Noble. I?m not sure where their outlets are.

5. Smashwords will distribute your book to Apple, Baker & Taylor, Diesel, Kobo, Sony et al. (If you don?t opt-out in their Distribution Channel Manager, they will also distribute to Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I recommend opting out of at least Amazon if not both.)

6. You cannot open a publisher account or otherwise publish your book directly to Apple, Baker & Taylor, Diesel, Kobo, or Sony. If you want to sell your book through them, you must go through a distributor, and for my money the best one is Smashwords.

7. The print edition and the ebook edition of your book must have different ISBNs. However, you do not have to purchase an ISBN for either one. Smashwords provides an ISBN (free) for those venues that require it; Amazon and Barnes & Noble use their own stock numbering system for ebooks; and CreateSpace (for print books) also provides a free ISBN.

8. Finally, for print publishing, I strongly recommend going through CreateSpace. I can recommend someone who will format your work for print, create a cover (from your design) and submit the work to Create Space for you for under $200, but you can also do this yourself if you want to invest the time in learning the process. To check it out, go to CreateSpace.com and, you know, read the FAQs.

If you want to go through a subsidy publisher, I recommend BookLocker.com. I fiercely recommend against using AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Trafford, Wheatmark and XLibris.

Of course, for traditional, no-fees, non-subsidy epublishing, I recommend submitting your work to StoneThreadPublishing.com, where your only cost is the edit or proofread (your book has to be edited anyway) and you earn a 70% royalty if we accept your work for publication.

Okay, I?ve probably yammered on long enough. There y?go. This is pretty much everything I know about epublishing, or where to find everything I know about epublishing, and all it will cost you is a few hours of your time, total.

If you?d rather enjoy a live crash course in which you can ask questions and receive answers in camaraderie with other like-minded writers, attend my upcoming seminar on The Essentials of Digital Publishing. It?s only thirty bucks for three to four hours of instruction. Email me to register or for further information.

?Til next time, happy writing and publishing!

Harvey

Anonymous 'Turkey Fairy' Leaves Warm Clothes Around Lyndhurst, Ohio (VIDEO)

A self-proclaimed 'Turkey Fairy' has been sauntering around Lyndhurst, Ohio, this week leaving behind gifts to ward off the bitter cold.

According to Wish TV, someone has been leaving newly-purchased blankets, hats and gloves at a bus stop outside of Cleveland, Ohio. Along with the goods, the anonymous donor leaves a note signed 'The Turkey Fairy.'

Workers at the nearby Family Urgent Care Center discovered the donation.

"They were here before I even got here. It happened yesterday. I came in again today and they actually doubled their supplies this morning when I came in," Nancy Panzero told News Net 5.

"People are being nice and only taking one, or two. I've never seen it and I've been here at urgent care for 30 years. It's very sweet," Panzero added.

One of the notes, taped to the side of the bus stop, said, "Be the change you want to see in the world. Take and stay warm! The Turkey Fairy strikes again!"

"There are so many negative stories on the news right now and around the world. And it makes me feel good to know that there are people who put it all aside and care about other people," Nancy Greff, another worker at the care
center, told Fox 11 News.

A crew working a few blocks down from the urgent care office say they know the identity of the mystery benefactor.

One of the workers, Vince Ujcich, says he actually met the Turkey Fairy . She dropped off coffee and donuts to his crew Monday morning. Ujcich said the woman was in hospital scrubs and said something along the lines of the notes left at the bus stop.

"She said they do this every year. I have to believe there's more than one Turkey Fairy running around Lyndhurst and it's a very nice thing to do," Ujcich said to News Net 5.

Gina Yafanaro and her daughter, Lauren, were visiting the urgent care center and decided to walk to the bus stop to see the latest note posted on the glass.

"I think that's incredible. It's awesome," Yafanaro said.

"There are not many people in the world who would do that and it's great that someone will take the time and think of the people who are unthought of," Lauren Yafanaro added.

wheeze flan: Creativity and Affect | Self Improvement & Personal ...

Creativity and Affect

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. 40-year-old virgin - Business Management Daily

Warn supervisors to stay away from demeaning jokes and other offensive, sexually oriented comments.

Recent case: William, who was a doctor, worked part time as a pathologist. He developed diabetes, was hospitalized and returned to work using a wheelchair. Shortly after, he was terminated.

William sued, alleging, among other things, that he had worked in a sexually hostile workplace. He claimed the coroner?his supervisor?sometimes called him a "40 year-old virgin," grabbed his groin, kissed him on the forehead, asked about his sex life and that of his mother and generally made himself a nuisance.

The court said he had enough evidence to warrant a jury trial to decide if the conduct constituted same-sex harassment, as well as whether William was fired on account of his disabilities. (Bligh-Glover v. Rizzo, No. 1:08-CV-2788, ND OH, 2012)

Parenthood Review: Communication Breakdown - TV Fanatic

This week, we had couples in distress because of scheduling mishaps, communications problems, illness, unstable relationships and suicide. Things were stacked against many of them in?"One More Weekend With You." Let's check out what was going on with the siblings and cousins in the Braverman clan.

There were some concerns in the comments last week about how Kristina is receiving her chemotherapy. I did some research and, according to the?Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, "?In order to prevent the sometimes uncomfortable process of placing an IV in the arm or leg, your doctor may suggest that you have a permanent (although it is removed after therapy is over) IV line put into a central vein in your chest." At this time, it would appear Kristina's doctor is not using state of the art medicine.?

While it may not be delivered in the most comfortable of methods, we learned it's certainly hitting its mark in?. All hell was breaking loose and just after Otis peed on the carpet, she threw up on the stairs trying to make it to the bathroom. I was expecting the neighbor boy, Micah, they were watching to reinforce the method of teaching the dog to Adam for Kristina, roll up a newspaper and hit her and then rub her nose in it.?

Kristina's Cancer Treatments

Max was on overload. Full Max mode, if you will. As Kristina was on the bathroom floor sick as a dog, he was still determinedly going to her to try to make his life right. Adam is never enough when he wants things to be set straight, and in his eyes only Kristina has the common sense to see things the way they are meant to be seen. Instead he was disgusted by her laying there, with all the microbes and fecal matter. But still, he was unable to grasp that she was suffering. They really needed help. ?

Crosby to the rescue! His protests about being a responsible parent aside, Adam was able to hit Crosby up for some marijuana. We're pretty lucky in Colorado, having a medical marijuana law (and now a non-medical one!), but it would take a while even in that case to get a license approved. When you see someone in pain, you want to do anything you can for them. Do I condone illegal drug use? No, but the legal drugs Kristina was given weren't doing anything. That's when you need to reevaluate why some drugs are legal and why some aren't.

Jasmine and Crosby finally had a great storyline! Their fight was so realistic. When you are living with someone, it's so difficult to know what do to about the other person's schedule. I'm sure when the party was first set, things hadn't been so crazy in the Braverman family. With Crosby working until 3 and 4am, throwing a weekend party is the last thing you want to do. But Crosby pulled it out in the end and Jasmine couldn't hide how much she loved him, even when he was a brat.

Another couple who are still learning how to work together are Sarah and Mark. I know many of you weren't pleased with my exclusion of Drew's antics in last week's review, but I wasn't ready to discuss his how awful I thought it was that he used Kristina's cancer to get Amy back. It was such a low thing to do, and I was shocked that Amy fell so easily for the trick. She fell pretty hard, as this week they were in bed when Mark walked in on them.

Watching Jason Ritter try to parent Drew as Mark about condoms and STDs had to be one of the most uncomfortable scenes I've seen in a very long time. It got kind of convoluted, but he promised Drew he wouldn't tell Sarah, then Sarah asked Hank for advice. Going against Mark's wishes, she told Drew she knew what happened. That threw a wrench in Mark's relationship with Drew and also showed Sarah thinks more highly of Hank's opinion thank Mark's. That cannot end well.

Even Joel and Julia faced a parenting dilemma. I've been waiting for Sydney to crack, and she fell apart in a big way this week. She made it clear Victor was not her brother, Julia didn't quit her job to spend time with her and Victor but only Victor, and in case they forgot, she was there first. Seeing her little tearful face, dragging her suitcase away in hopes of finding a taxi was heartbreaking, but totally understandable. We've all been wondering where Sydney was as Joel and Julia attempted to bond with Victor. From being an only child to having an older brother was a huge deal.

It was wonderful of Joel to wake up the next morning with an understanding of where Sydney was coming from. Julia's first response was that Sydney's tantrum really worked on Joel, but Joel stood his ground. Sydney made some valid points. They had been spending so much time making sure Victor felt secure in his new family, the kind of forgot to make sure Sydney felt as secure with her new family, as well. The three of them finally did something together, and I loved the classic Sydney response to Julia's idea of taking Victor some hot chocolate on their way home. Nah.

Finally, Amber and Ryan went on a road trip to a funeral for one of the guys from Ryan's unit. He committed suicide. I thought it was pretty evident, but it took a while for Amber to catch on. Ryan took it pretty badly and gave her an out. Amber watched her mother take care of her father all her life, and that's definitely not the life I'd want for her, but being a veteran is also much different than being an addict. Every couple has something to move through or past, and if they can get through things like friend's suicides and the haunting feelings they bring up, they should be okay.
