Educators remember student killed on ATV

Michael Sparks spent three years as a student at Crawford Middle School. Today, the Crawford family is trying to figure out how to say goodbye to him and it's not only the students who are affected.

"We do this for a reason. We do this because we love our kids. Part of me today was lost," said Principal Mike Jones.

Jones says Michael Sparks made an impression on him early on in his time at Crawford Middle.

He would come in and 'Hey, do you need some help carrying that? Well, sure! You carry it, you know I'm getting old! You carry it!'" said Jones.

He said that willingness to help out defined Michael and over the next three years, he and the rest of the staff at Crawford grew to care for him.

"Great personality. Kind of that quiet jokester kind of kid," he said.

After Sparks was killed last night in an ATV accident, Jones said he knew it would be a tough day for the students.

"We brought them in the library and the grief counselors worked with the students to tell stories and write letters and to draw pictures and just to share and go through the grieving process together," he said.

He said the school would also be there for the Sparks family.

"The Crawford family, the kids and the staff alike, are here to support them and help them through this loss and tough time," he said.

Jones said the school may call for more counselors on Monday.
